Essay: Christmases in Estonia

Maarja Mägi 11B Christmas celebrations in Estonia In Estonia, Christmas time is considered to be the most important time of the year. In recent times, Christmases have grown to be more a commercial holiday. What is more, Estonian Christmas celebrations have been changed due to German cultural influences. Christmases in Estonia on the whole have two meanings: first one is to celebrate the birth of the Christ and secondly it marks the whole period of mid-winter festivities. In Estonia's folk tradition, Christmas (in Estonian "jõulud" is of ancient Scandinavian origin and has no connection with Christianity) was a time of year to celebrate the shortest day and longest night. At the same time, Christmas was the culmination of the late autumn celebrations. Christmas Eve and Christmas Night were the most sacred times of the season.

response. I will bring out some ways, how to deal with body shaming Practice identifying why you are upset about a situation. For example, it’s unlikely that you’re mad at a friend because she’s breaking out, and more likely that you’re upset about a miscommunication or feeling of rejection. Practice thinking it, and eventually, verbalizing it. Identify who in your life is body-positive – or even body-neutral. Think of people who celebrate their body for what it can do, and people who refuse to comment on others’ physical appearances. Spending time with these people can be especially helpful while you are struggling with your own internalized body-shaming, and help you view yourself – and others – more positively. Confront those who perpetuate body-shaming. Once you’ve become more aware of your own body-shaming behaviors, you may notice how often your friends, family or co-workers do it. Talk to them

Some people say that popular British-American traditions are destroying Estonian culture

I chose this topic because I mostly agree with this. First either way is Estonian culture a mix of different cultures. Different countries like Germany and Russia have influenced our cultur e. For example Seto people have polyphonic folk music because of Russia, rest of Estonia don't have it. Secondly I think nowadays it's normal that people take over some things in different cultures because we have globalization. For example people increasingly celebrate Halloween in Estonia. I believe because of things like that people say that British-American traditions are destroying. Finally I believe that British-American traditions are destroying when we let them to destroy our culture. But if we don't forget how valuable our culture is then it's alright.

Minagi liikusin saksa keele leti juurde. Siin minu ees ta praegu on, "Celebrate 20 years after the fall of the wall Berlin".

Each of them has their own tartan. Its a traditional woollen cloth over the shoulder. Men in Scotland wear kilts. Nowadays there are a lot of tartan shops in Scotland, which sell cloth, kilts, scarves, bags, travelling rugs, and dresses in tartan patterns. Sometimes they offer people the service of finding out which part of Scotland their great-grand parents came from. Scotland's greatest poet Robert Burns, who's dead by now, had his birthday th on 25 January. People celebrate that day by having Burns' Night Dinner. On that night people drink whisky, eat typical Scottish food such as haggis and listen to bagpipe music. There is a special poem to haggis, which they read when they put the dish on the table. Popular song from Burns is "Auld Lang Syne". People sing it at midnight on New Year's Eve. When I go to Scotland, I want to see the Loch Ness Monster and Scotland's magnificent landscape.

Europe. At the moment Supilinn is being rapidly renovated, undergoing a slow transformation from the historic slum into a prestigious highclass neighborhood. The active community embodied by the Supilinn Society is committed to preserving the heritage. Tartu's large student population means that it has a comparatively thriving nightlife, with many bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. Annually, in the summer, Tartu hosts the Hansa Days Festival (Estonian: Hansapäevad) to celebrate the Hanseatic heritage under the motto "History lives" when the old town bustles with activity from handicraft markets and historic workshops to a jousting tournament.

Traditions

that this is the right time to get drunk and do things which you don´t want to remember tomorrow and that`s sad. Because this should be the time to think about what has happened in the previous year and think about the future. This evening should be unforgettable. I think that this tradition- celebrating the New Year has lost its meaning and glamour. Also I think that every country should have their own traditions. In Estonia I think the most important tradition is in February 24 when we celebrate the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. This day unites us as a nation. Every person should know the meaning of a tradition. We should preserve them and create new ones. Keit Kallas

About 400 people work at the Palace, including domestic servants, chefs, footmen, cleaners, plumbers, gardeners, chauffers, electricians, and two people who look after the 300 clocks. At the rear of the palace, is the large and park-like garden which, together with its lake, is the largest private garden in London. Here the Queen hosts her annual garden parties each summer, and also holds large functions to celebrate royal milestones, such as jubilees. It covers 40 acres, and includes a helicopter landing area, a lake, and a tennis court. When the Queen is at home, you can see her royal flag flying from the flag pole on top of Buckingham Palace. This flag is called the Royal Standard. Buckingham Palace is used also for the administrative work for the monarchy. http://buckinghampalace.londonpass.com/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckingham_Palace#History http://www.royal.gov

A true friend

Many people talk about having hundreds of “friends” on Facebook. But these “friends” are not real, their contact with you is tentative, and they are quite possibly only fair- weather friends. A real friend is a person you can lean on for support, share your darkest secrets with, laugh and cry together with, someone who can hold you and hug you, wipe away your tears, go to the cinema with and talk with. This friend is ready to celebrate your achievements with you and is just as prepared to stick by you when you feel down in the dumps. Your real friend is not some faceless digital connection , he or she is someone who is always there for you. Friends are everything to me. Without friends life would have little meaning. After all, the moments what you will experience arent so meaningful if you haven’t got a friend to share the moment with.

Rugby internationals played at Dublin's Lansdowne Road stadium are considered high points of the sporting year. Enthusiasts of horse racing flock to the Galway Races in the summer and early fall. Holidays and Celebrations The Irish celebrate New Year's Day on 1 January. Saint Patrick's Day on 17 March is a national holiday and is marked by parades, shamrock decorations, and sometimes the wearing of clothing that is green (the national color). Legend has it that resourceful Saint Patrick made use of the three-lobed shamrock as a diagram to explain the Holy Trinity to his uneducated congregation. However, the pre-Christian Irish had long associated the shamrock with Trefulngid Tre-eochair ("The Triple Bearer of the Triple Key"), the
