Britain and the sea

Seaman suffering from illnesses and hunger died in the streets of coastal villages even several months after returning to land. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the number of ships increased more than four times as trade between Britain and other countries was growing. The ships were small and they were needed in great numbers to carry all the cargoes. Hundreds of then were wrecked off the coasts of the British Isles.

Transportimise omadused: Antud juhul tegutseme trampvedudega – nn juhuveod, reeglina laevapartiiliste kaupade mitteregulaarsed veod. Tegutseme lastiveoga (Cargo Transport) – reeglina veetakse ühes reisis ainult lasti (kaupu). Erandjuhtudel võidakse võtta peale ka kuni 12 reisijat, ilma et sellistele vedudele laieneksid reisilaevanduse (kõrgendatud) nõuded. Kasutame puistelastina vedu (Bulk Cargoes) – kaubad ei oma taarat, vaid paigutatakse vahetult laevaruumidesse või -tekile. Tavaliselt veetakse kivisütt, maake, teravilja, väetisi, koksi, turvast, klinkerit, puiduhaket ja mitmeid muid kaupu. Puistlastilaevade lastimine ja lossimine võib võtta palju aega ja olla ohtlik. Lastimis- lossimisplaani koostab kapten tavaliselt koos vanemtüürimehega. Rahvusvahelised reeglid nõuavad, et kapten ja sadamaoperaator kooskõlastavad lastimis-lossimisplaani enne tööde algust.
