Tourists in Estonia

Tourists in Estonia Everyday a we can see a ship-load of Finland tourists. And they are here for only one thing. Finns are not anyone who would like to see Estonian sight-seeings or old-town, they are here for cheap alcohol. Regular Finn are an over-weight and very loud, usually because they are drunk. And our hotels are full of Finns. If you ever visit a passenger-port and see a person who have one or more luggage carriers full of export beer boxes then you have seen our north-neighbour. world. But it can be negative as well. So should countries encourage tourism? Tourism has many advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that countries have more money so they can improve its infrastructure which is a benefit for the local people. For example, roads and communication links built. Tourism provides indirect employment in terms of workers who help to produce goods and services in the economy to meet the increasing demands of the population and the tourists. Tourists also take with them, souvenirs which can be produced by people. In spite of the advantages of tourism, there can be many disadvantages too, as there are always two sides of everything. First of all, tourists cause pollution. Increased pollution disturbs local residents and also it may discourage tourists from further entering the country. Secondly tourists don't always respect traditional cultures and cultures can be broken down as a result of tourism

Anthropology and Tourism

Taylor (1871) defines culture as a whole complex, which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, 1 Anthropology of Tourism Madli Tuvike morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. Nash (1996) summarized that culture is a system of activities for a group. It can be argued that, for adventure tourists, the adventurous activities are the culture and lifestyle itself. This can be illustrated on examples of some adventure tourism activities, such as snowboarding, surfing or climbing. People who practice these will dress similar, associate with people who are participating in the same activities, listen to the same music and have similar interests and are likely to spend time together with people who have similar lifestyles– they have their own social groups, culture and lifestyles.

Fair Trade Tourism

Fair Trade Tourism Local people have often been the last to benefit financially from international tourism. But this is slowly changing. It's happening in Vietnam. The first tourists can see many famous war sites, towns and vibrant green paddy fields. But if they go up into the hills they find a region inhabited by hill tribe people, who live basic, subsistence life. Local people are looking at tourists with fear and disdain. In the villages children are playing and mothers with elaborate headdresses are getting on their daily lives, but if tourists come, they run indoors and villages become silent. In Thailand hill tribe treks have become infamous ,,human zoos". Tourists from all over the world traipse through the villages and this causes cultural and economic disaster. Also the benefits of toursim are often skimmed off by businessmen from outside the community

Also tourism services such as roads, bars, hotels, restaurants and other leisure facilities are built. Thanks to it, local people can get more jobs. Finally, tourism allows both the tourist and the local community a chance to experience other cultures.

We are visited by many tourists from Finland, Sweden, Latvia and many other countries. Tourists from the Scandinavian countries and from other places of Europe don't speak in Estonian. Basicly tourists creat jobs and give people a chance to do something with their lives. The money and taxes, that all the hotels and companys pay, help to develop the local community. Also it brings in good money, especially when the country or an area is attractive and good weather is guaranteed. That money could be used wisely, like building new sightseeings or renovate the old ones. However, it brings us not only benefits, but also dangers. Some tourists don't respect the places they visit and they dump trash or vandalise. There is also a danger of overcrowding and epidemics. The most popular places to which people travel are mountains, seasides or warm countries. The advantage of tourism is the mutual cooperation of the tourists and people who are working in this business. The expiration of leases for sugar cane farmers (along with reduced farm and factory efficiency) has led to a decline in sugar production despite a subsidized price. Urbanization and expansion in the service sector have contributed to recent GDP growth. Sugar exports and a rapidly growing tourist industry -- with 430,800 tourists in 2003[24] and increasing in the subsequent years -- are the major sources of foreign exchange. Fiji is highly dependent on tourism for revenue. Sugar processing makes up one-third of industrial activity. Long-term problems include low investment and uncertain property rights. The occupancy drops significantly in the July and August which is probably due to the fact that businesses generally run slower in that part of the summer (due to plague of vacations) in the northern hemisphere on latitudes with explicit seasonal changes. Therefore, the hotel must be located on the part of the globe described. The occupancy by women seems to be somewhat statistically correlated with percentage of tourists residing in the hotel. This may imply that the most business people staying in the hotel are men. The women occupancy seems to peak at three points: April, October and December. The latter is probably due to couples and families (influx of people aged under 20 is in December and October too) going on vacation for Christmas, New Year's Eve and other seasonal holidays.
