Ms. Feigelson, who works as a political organizer and volunteer, explained: "It means against the oppression of those who are physically or mentally disabled, and extends to language. Like you wouldn't use the word `lame.' " O.K., then. Ms. Feigelson was at home with some of her housemates, including Robin Markle, 23, who works at a community college teaching seniors computer skills, and Gauge, 30, who is transitioning from he to she and works in an S&M store, and also declined to give a last name. They were passing the phone around the afternoon before the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh, where a few of them were planning a trip, intending to protest, Ms. Markle said. Ms. Feigelson explained that they were being "super-selective," because an activist

It seemed to me that irritation was winning out over amusement as the dominant emotion in his face. I fidgeted nervously with the zipper on my jacket. He stepped up to the counter and filled a tray with food. "What are you doing?" I objected. "You're not getting all that for me?" He shook his head, stepping forward to buy the food. "Half is for me, of course." I raised one eyebrow. He led the way to the same place we'd sat that one time before. From the other end of the long table, a group of seniors gazed at us in amazement as we sat across from each other. Edward seemed oblivious. "Take whatever you want," he said, pushing the tray toward me. "I'm curious," I said as I picked up an apple, turning it around in my hands, "what would you do if someone dared you to eat food?" "You're always curious." He grimaced, shaking his head. He glared at me, holding my eyes as he lifted the slice of pizza off the tray, and deliberately bit off a mouthful, chewed quickly, and then swallowed. I
with information in a controlled fashion when they have both the desire and the ability to analyze it carefully; otherwise, they are likely to use the easier click, whirr approach (Epley 8{ Gilovich, 2006; Petty 8{ Wegener, 1999). For instance, in one study (Petty, Cacioppo, 8{ Goldman, 1981), students at the University of Missouri listened to a recorded speech that supported the idea of requiring all seniors to pass com- prehensive examinations before they would be allowed to graduate. The issue af- fected some of them personally, because they were told that the exams could go into effect in the next year-before they had the chance to graduate. Of course, this news made them want to analyze the arguments carefully. However, for other sub- jects in the study, the issue had little personal importance-because they were told
information." Those are the words of a leading surgeon at UCSF, who encouraged me to take my papers with me before hospital records claimed them as their property. Now the good news: with a little help, it's never been easier to collect a few data points (at little cost), track them (without training), and make small changes that produce incredible results. Type 2 diabetics going o of medication 48 hours after starting a dietary intervention? Wheelchair-bound seniors walking again after 14 weeks of training? This is not science ction. It's being done today. As William Gibson, who coined the term "cyberspace," has said: "The future is already here--it is just unevenly distributed."
