and cannon, mirrors, hawkbells and earrings, copper and brass kettles, and so on. However, conflicts eventually arose. As a starter, the arriving Europeans seemed attuned to another world, they appeared to be oblivious to the rhythms and spirit of nature. Nature to the Europeans - and the Indians detected this - was something of an obstacle, even an enemy. It was also a commodity: A forest was so many board feet of timber, a beaver colony so many pelts, a herd of buffalo so many robes and tongues. Even the Indians themselves were a resource - souls ripe for the Jesuit, Dominican, or Puritan plucking. It was the Europeans' cultural arrogance, coupled with their materialistic view of the land and its animal and plant beings, that the Indians found repellent. Europeans, in sum, were regarded as something mechanical - soulless creatures who wielded diabolically ingenious tools and weapons to accomplish mad ends.

(All Info About London's homepage: http://london.allinfo-about.com/features/plague.html) Thousands of Londoners lived on boats on the River Thames during the height of the plague and many of these survived. (All Info About London's homepage: http://london.allinfo- about.com/features/plague.html) 3.2 Bring out your dead A picture of removing corpses from the city can be seen on page 15 (Appendix 3) The city was full of dead bodies. To solve the problem men who wore black robes were sent to the town. They used horse carts to carry the corpses out of the city to the pits. One man walked on the streets and jingled his bell and yelled: ,,Bring out your dead!" People then carried the corpses out of their homes on the streets and men who were dressed in robes threw them on to the carrier and removed them from the city streets. 5 The death toll mounted to such an extent that graveyards soon became full. Visitors to the island at Easter can get a taste of the faith and pageantry of the Ibicencos in the religious processions which take place in the towns and villages. The main ones are in Santa Eulalia and Ibiza town and smaller versions take place in Santa Gertrudis, San Miguel, San Vicente and San Lorenzo. First timers are often shocked at the outfits worn by the 'cofradias' or brotherhoods of penitents whose pointed hats and flowing robes resemble those of the Klansmen of the USA. In Santa Eulalia the processions leave the church at 21.00 on Thursday 9th April and 20.00 on Friday 10th and march solemnly through the streets of the town carrying statues and accompanied by brass bands. In Ibiza the procession leaves the Cathedral on Friday 10th at 20.30 hours. Ibiza Music is recognizable by powerful grooves mixed with Spanish influences.

Repeats to thee thy mother's grief. Kill not the moth nor butterfly, For the last judgement draweth nigh. He who shall train the horse to war Shall never pass the polar bar. The beggar's dog and widow's cat, Feed them and thou wilt grow fat. The gnat that sings his summer's song Poison gets from slander's tongue. The poison of the snake and newt Is the sweat of envy's foot. The poison of the honey bee Is the artist's jealousy. The prince's robes and beggar's rags Are toadstools on the miser's bags. A truth that's told with bad intent Beats all the lies you can invent. It is right it should be so; Man was made for joy and woe; And when this we rightly know, Thro' the world we safely go. Joy and woe are woven fine, A clothing for the soul divine. Under every grief and pine Runs a joy with silken twine. The babe is more than swaddling bands; Every farmer understands.

In ancient Olympic Games the Olympic flame was ignited and it burnt until the end of the games. In modern Olympics the flame appeared in 1928. The flame represents purity, endeavor of perfection etc. In 1936 Carl Diem suggested what is now the modern Olympic Torch Relay. It is lit in Olympia by women wearing ancient-style robes using a curved mirror and the sun. It is given from runner to runner until the games have begun. The Olympic flag was created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1914. There are five rings on a white background. The rings are blue, white, yellow, green and red. They represent the five continents of the world. The motto of the Olympic Games is "citius, altius, fortius" which means "swifter, higher, stronger". prepared with different kinds of fruit which is cut into pieces, then it is mixed with juice and cider. Christmas in Germany Christmas preparations often begin on the eve of December 6th. People often set aside special evenings for baking spiced cakes and cookies, and making gifts and decorations. Little dolls of fruit are traditional Christmas toys. Children leave letters on their windowsills for Christkind, a winged figure dressed in white robes and a golden crown who distributes gifts. Sometimes the letters are decorated with glue and sprinkled with sugar to make them sparkle. Germans make beautiful gingerbread houses and cookies. The German Christmas tree pastry, Christbaumgeback, is a white dough that can be molded into shapes and baked for tree decorations. In parts of Germany, people believe that the Christ Child sends a messenger in Christmas Eve. He appears as an angel in a white robe and crown, bearing gifts

Peter implemented social modernization in an absolute manner by introducing French and western dress to his court and requiring courtiers, state officials, and the military to shave their beards and adopt modern clothing styles. One means of achieving this end was the introduction of taxes for long beards and robes in September 1698. To improve his nation's position on the seas, Peter sought to gain more maritime outlets. His only outlet at the time was the White Sea at Arkhangelsk. The Baltic Sea was at the time controlled by Sweden in the north, while the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea were controlled by the Ottoman Empire and Safavid Empire respectively in the south. Peter attempted to acquire control of the Black Sea, which would require expelling the Tatars from the surrounding areas

Nagu kirjutas üks küsitletu:”Parem uskugu haldjaid, kui pokemone ja digimone.” 10 “The simple woman assented, and fetched the robes and presented them to the Peri. She put them on, and then, like a bird escaped from the cage, spread her wings, and, crying Farewell, soared to the sky and was seen no more.”

clothing is still imported from abroad, notably Europe, China and Asia. In the 90 to more than 100 degrees weather of Africa, you are not considered to have dressed properly unless you are wearing a suit. The suits are not even produced in Africa. The yarns for the suit-clothing are made in Europe or Hong Kong. The thread is made in Europe. The needle is made in Europe. The tailors are either Europeans or Asians. Even when Africans have condescended to wear their own flowing robes, all the textile materials are also imported. In fact, the lace which our women like so much is imported. The “George” is made in Holland. How can a race of people be happy in life when they know that they are totally dependent on others for all their needs? It is extremely necessary that we take a few minutes, hours, days, or months to ponder the intelligence of a race who cannot produce the basic things of life

desires are impossible to reconcile..." He trailed off, staring at my face. Waiting. "I'm not running anywhere," I promised. "We'll see," he said, smiling again. I frowned at him. "So, go on -- Carlisle was swimming to France." He paused, getting back into his story. Reflexively, his eyes flickered to another picture -- the most colorful of them all, the most ornately framed, and the largest; it was twice as wide as the door it hung next to. The canvas overflowed with bright figures in swirling robes, writhing around long pillars and off marbled balconies. I couldn't tell if it represented Greek mythology, or if the characters floating in the clouds above were meant to be biblical. "Carlisle swam to France, and continued on through Europe, to the universities there. By night he studied music, science, medicine -- and found his calling, his penance, in that, in saving human lives." His expression became awed, almost reverent. "I can't adequately describe the struggle; it took Carlisle two

not only in followers, but also in wealth and property. The economic growth was funded through a variety of activities, the principal and most visible of which was society members' requests for donations from passersby in public places. During the early history of the group in this country, the solicitation for contributions was attempted in a fashion memorable for anyone who saw it. Groups of Krishna devo- tees-often with shaved heads, and wearing ill-fitting robes, leg wrappings, beads, and bells-would canvass a city street, chanting and bobbing in unison while beg- ging for funds. Although highly effective as an attention-getting technique, this practice did not work especially well for fund-raising. The average American considered the Krishnas weird, to say the least, and was reluctant to provide money to support them. It quickly became clear to the society that it had a considerable public- relations problem
