In Venus and Adonis, an innocent Adonis rejects the sexual advances of Venus; while in The Rape of Lucrece, the virtuous wife Lucrece is raped by the lustful Tarquin. Influenced by Ovid's Metamorphoses, the poems show the guilt and moral confusion that result from uncontrolled lust.[ Both proved popular and were often reprinted during Shakespeare's lifetime. A third narrative poem, A Lover's Complaint, in which a young woman laments her seduction by a persuasive suitor, was printed in the first edition of the Sonnets in 1609. Most scholars now accept that Shakespeare wrote A Lover's Complaint. Critics consider that its fine qualities are marred by leaden effects. Autobiography Douglass' most well-known work is his first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which was published in 1845. Critics frequently attacked the book as inauthentic, not believing that a black man could possibly have produced so eloquent a piece of literature. The book was an immediate bestseller and received overwhelmingly positive critical reviews. Within three years of its publication, it had been reprinted nine times with 11,000 copies circulating in the United States; it was also translated into the French and Dutch languages. The book's success had an unfortunate side effect: his friends and mentors feared that the publicity would draw the attention of his ex-owner, Hugh Auld, who could try to get his "property" back. They encouraged him to go on a tour in Ireland, as many other ex-slaves had done in the past. He set sail on the Cambria for Liverpool on August 16, 1845, and

At 47, Vigenere quit the court, turned over his annuity of 1,000 livres a year to the poor of Paris, married the much younger Marie Vare, and devoted himself to his writing. His Traicte des Chiffres, which was written in 1585 despite the distraction of a year-old baby daughter, appeared, elegantly rubricated, in 1586, and was reprinted the following year. His autokey system used the plaintext as the key. It provided a priming key. This consisted of a single letter, known to both encipherer and decipherer, with which the decipherer could decipher the first cryptogram letter and so get a start on his, work. With this, he would get the first plaintext letter, then use this as the key to decipher the second cryptogram letter, use that plaintext as the key to decipher the third cryptogram letter, and so on.

Shaw’s Barrington Brown article was first written in the 1960’s in the Journal of Cat Genetics, and reprinted in the early 1970’s in Cats Magazine and has been subject to much reinterpretation, especially when a dilute modifier emerged in the cat fancy. According to Shaw's breeding data, Barrington Brown (mahogany brown) dilution was inherited in much the same way as “standard chocolate dilution" (black/chocolate alleles) by reducing the amount of pigment in the hair and by producing elliptical pigment granules instead of round granules
