Different cultures

When the languages are different, and translation has to be used to communicate, the potential for misunderstandings increases. Second are "behavior constraints." Each culture has its own rules about proper behavior which affect verbal and nonverbal communication. Whether one looks the other person in the eye-or not; whether one says what one means overtly or talks around the issue; how close the people stand to each other when they are talking--all of these and many more are rules of politeness which differ from culture to culture. Third factor is "emotional constraints." Different cultures regulate the display of emotion differently. Some cultures get very emotional when they are debating an issue. They yell, they cry, they exhibit their anger, fear, frustration, and other feelings openly. Other cultures try to keep their emotions hidden, exhibiting or sharing only the "rational" or factual aspects of the situation. All of these differences tend to lead to communication problems

g. between professor and student, boss and employer, or child and parent in some societies). A text will usually have many elements that help us determine the different aspects of tenor, such as the (1) level of formality of the text (how formal it is – very formal, everyday speech, slang, etc.), (2) social distance (determined by society – such terms as Miss, Mr, nicknames, use of last or first names, etc. help us understand how close or distant a relationship is, and (3) politeness between the speaker and the addressee (use of the formal ‘teie’ in Estonian; politeness phrases, such as ‘please’, ‘could’, ‘shall’, ‘would you mind’, etc.). Mode- The second sub-parameter of language use is mode (moodus/vahend); in essence, this is the choice between speaking and writing. Some languages might have words that are almost exclusively used in either written or spoken language and to use them in the other

Tolerance and diversity

us thinks that the one he believes is the only real. You do not have to like the same food, dress the same way or listen to the same music as your friends do. But always be opened to get to know about these differences. If your behaviour do not accord to the persons expectations then it will hurt him and you will get disrespected. Many of us don't have the opportunity to live a healthy and full life , that is why we should always treat each other equally. Tolerance is all about politeness against people from other countries with other religions and cultures. People like this never discriminate others against on the basis of their sex, colour, religion, culture and so on. It is about a norm of polite society when you are interacting with another person with a different background. This means that you don't define your religion by saying "I'm not like those people over there." It means that you describe what you believe

London the new Babel

Many people move to London to work or study. It is very popular among young people because of the nightlife, universities with good reputation and big shopping streets. For older people the main attraction is in theatres, great museums and parks. In the past few years, the number of immigrants has grown rapidly because of the widening of the European Union. It is now easier for people to travel inside the EU. Londoners are well known for their politeness but not all of them deserve this kind of fame. There are many people living in London who do not accept other races and religions. They do not like foreigners visiting London as tourists nor living there. Racism is most common among young people or in areas where many coloured people live. The most common act of racism is calling names. There are very many coloured people in London and it is offensive to call them "nigga", "negro" or "Japs". But calling names isn't the worst act of racism

When in Rome do as Romans do: Mexico

Good themes to speak about are Mexican culture, history, art and museums. All things considered, Mexico is a country worth visiting, it could offer an extraordinary experience for everyone. Although, when you get in trouble there, the locals will definitely help you. In my opinion, acting a little bit more different for some days is nothing, when you want to get well along with the Mexicans. The tourists only have to follow the main aspects of politeness and traditions for that. My suggestion is: when in Mexico do as Mexicans do.

Class and social status in Pride and Prejudice

in love with, Elizabeth. He goes as far as mentioning his superiority to her in his first marriage proposal, as was described in the novel. "His sense of her inferiority -of its being a degradation- of the family obstacles which judgment had always opposed to inclination, were dwelt on with warmth which seemed due to the consequence he was wounding, but was very unlikely to recommend his suit." This may show that Mr. Darcy had zero comprehension of politeness, but it can also serve as a proof of the deep-rooted understandings of equal fortune and class between the ones who tie the knot in the 19th century. Obviously marriage was not the only point that was affected by the class divisions. A conversation carried out by the representative of a great titled family and the members of mediocre class illustrates the differences between them in even the smallest aspects of the everyday life

symbolizes the welcome for the Holy Family. Every window in the house is garlanded with lights. The Christmas Tree The tree is decorated with tinsel and baubles and lights and gifts are put underneath. The gifts are opened on Christmas morning, not before! Here is a nice collection of Christmas ornaments and decorations from Ireland. Gift Giving: Presents are a big thing in Ireland. One need only visit the cousins to find that nearly anything that is admired is offered. The usual politeness must be abandoned. It's acceptable to tell another that a scarf, for example, suits them, but to admire it outright is akin to asking for it. Beware. At Christmas, gifts are given to the whole family. The Irish are generous people. If it is at all possible, everyone gets a little something. Usually, there is one main gift given by the person closest and a constellation of small gifts are exchanged based on relationship

They are famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their sense of humour. British people have a strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for foreigners to understand. Leningrad blockade during the Second World War, when many resorted to barbarianism and cannibalism, even though these ideas are strongly against civilized norms. Thus, norms help to contribute to the build-up of societal order, as they are generally beneficial to all individuals. Our values are more personal, but these do are affected by the norms in the societies. However, at times of crisis norms and values can lose their importance, and they can differ from being good (as politeness) or harmful, if established in a deviant group. This is why in author's opinion norms and values van not be considered as the only explanation to social order. Power and authority The third possible explanation to social order is the presence of power and authority in our societies. Unlike norms, which can often be violated and have proven to be not entirely sufficient when explaining social order, the presence of a governing body seems to fill in where other factors become lacklustre.

Jane Austen

" Mr. Darcy, with grave propriety, requested to be allowed the honour of her hand, but in vain. Elizabeth was determined; nor did Sir William at all shake her purpose by his attempt at persuasion. "You excel so much in the dance, Miss Eliza, that it is cruel to deny me the happiness of seeing you; and though this gentleman dislikes the amusement in general, he can have no objection, I am sure, to oblige us for one half-hour." "Mr. Darcy is all politeness," said Elizabeth, smiling. "He is, indeed; but, considering the inducement, my dear Miss Eliza, we cannot wonder at his complaisance--for who would object to such a partner?" Elizabeth looked archly, and turned away. Her resistance had not injured her with the gentleman, and he was thinking of her with some complacency, when thus accosted by Miss Bingley: "I can guess the subject of your reverie." "I should imagine not."

As Murphy notices, interpreting is, above all, a matter of politeness. Lonely travellers need to be integrated in the community. However, interpreting not only involves mediation between people, but also interpretation of `reality', cultural translation, and self-translation. It is quite clear that, unwittingly or not, interpreters may distort

Staying in Tallinn, he noticed the profound musical talent of Aavik, but found the technical side of his conducting to be imperfect.1 During the emigration period in Sweden, in his mature and elder years, the best symphonic works of Aavik were composed: the Violin Concerto (1945), the Violoncello

Every day, I watched anxiously until the rest of the Cullens entered the cafeteria without him. Then I could relax and join in the lunchtime conversation. Mostly it centered around a trip to the La Push Ocean Park in two weeks that Mike was putting together. I was invited, and I had agreed to go, more out of politeness than desire. Beaches should be hot and dry. By Friday I was perfectly comfortable entering my Biology class, no longer worried that Edward would be there. For all I knew, he had dropped out of school. I tried not to think about him, but I couldn't totally suppress the worry that I was responsible for his continued absence, ridiculous as it seemed. My first weekend in Forks passed without incident.
