Mammals of Australia

Mammals of Australia · Australia has more than 378 mammal species . · It is the only continent in the world to still have all three of the major groups of mammals: monotremes, marsupials and placentals. · Some of the best-known animals are the kangaroo, koala, echidna, dingo, platypus, wallaby and wombat. · Monotremes - egg-laying mammals (nowadays found only in Australia and New Guinea) Marsupials - babies born in embryonic condition and kept firmly attached to a teat in a pouch or nestled behind a protective skin-flap while developing further Placentals - unborn young are nourished by a placenta and born at a more advanced stage, some still naked, blind and unable to walk for a week or two, others able to run on their day of birth

northern Australia. The Sugar Gliders are small creatures with a shiny grey-silver coat. They are around 40 cm's long from nose to tail, and weigh just 150 grams. They feed at night. Sugar Gliders can glide through the air for up to 100 metres. When they glide, they spread their arms and legs out and float down to their landing. They use their long tail to help steer when gliding through the air.Sugar Glider's nest in a hollow of a tree, or in a nest made of twigs and leaves. VII slaid The platypus is found in eastern Australia. They live aside freshwater rivers or lakes, and create burrows for shelter and protection. When swimming the platypus has its eyes shut. They swim underwater for 2 minutes, before returning to the surface for oxygen. Platypuses can consume their own body weight in food in a 24 hour period! The male platypus has venom strong enough to can kill a small dog, or cause excruciating pain among humans. VIII slaid Thank you for listening!

grow up in its pouch. The Tasmanian tiger (often also known as the Tasmanian wolf) also lived on Tasmania a hundred years ago. It had stripes on its back like a tiger. It was more than 1.5 metres long. Scientists believe that hunters killed all of them at the beginning of the 20th century. The egg-laying mammals are the strangest of all the Australian animals. They lay eggs like birds and feed their young with milk as mammals do.They form a link between birds and mammals. The platypus or the duck-bill is one of them. The female lays two eggs in a nest of leaves and grass at the end of a burrow in a river bank. When the young come out of the eggs , they start eating the milk that comes through the mother's stomach skin. The platypus is a good swimmer and gets its food mainly from the river. It has a strong tail. It lives in the rivers of East Australia mostly. The echidna or a spiny ant-eater is the other egg-laying mammal that lives in Australia

largest economy and has the world's fifthhighest per capita income. Enviroment. Although most of Australia is semiarid or desert, it includes a diverse range of habitats from alpine heaths to tropical rainforests. Australian forests are mostly made up of evergreen species, particularly eucalyptus trees in the less arid regions, wattles replace them in drier regions and deserts as the most dominant species. Among wellknown Australian fauna are the monotremes (the platypus and echidna); a host of marsupials, including the kangaroo, koala, and wombat, and birds such as the emu and the kookaburra. The koala and eucalyptus form an iconic australian pair pair. Culture. Since 1788, the basis of Australian culture has been strongly influenced by Anglo-Celtic Western culture. Distinctive cultural features have also arisen from Australia's natural environment and Indigenous cultures.

Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub

Animals like bobcats, elk, bison, mountain lions, timberwolves, and coyotes used to be found in the deciduous forests, but have been hunted down by humans and almost wiped out. Melting snow in spring and rain during summer provide water for streams and ponds. Many water birds, insects, and fishes are found in this biome, along with amphibians such as frogs and salamanders, and reptiles such as lizards and small snakes. The platypus lives in the temperate forests of Australia. Animal Adaptations: The animals have developed different ways of surviving in this biome. Many of them migrate to warmer places to escape the cold winter months, while others hibernate (sleep) through the winter when food is scarce. Some animals such as squirrels, chipmunks and jays store food when it is plentiful, using hollows of trees as storehouses for nuts and seeds. In winter this store of food keeps them fed. have adopted is food storage.

As a result, the reptilelike mammals that have died out everywhere else in the world are alive in Australia. The higher groups of mammals that developed in the rest of the world after Australia was cut off had to be brought there millions of years later by the colonists. Australia is,in fact, a continent-sized museum of ancient animals, modernised along certain lines by their own separate evolution. Two of the strangest animals in the world are the spiny anteater and the platypus. They are reptilelike mammals. They have hair like cats and dogs but they lay shelled eggs like snakes and turtles. Their babies are born from eggs but drink milk from their mothers. The ecidna (spiny anteater) eats ants which it catches with its long fat tongue. The platypus has a wide bill like a duck and a wide flat tail. It swims well but it can only stay under water for a few minutes. First it shuts its ears and eyes.

Australia/ Austraalia

Now a strange thing happened when the ocean blocked off this island continent. The ancestors of cats and tigers, of dogs and wolves, of elephant and sheep just were not there. As a result, the reptile like mammals that have died out everywhere else in the world are very much alive in Australia. Australia is, in fact, a continent-sized museum of ancient animals, modernized along certain lines by their own separate evolution. Two of the strangest animals in the world the spiny anteater and the platypus, only live in Australia. They are reptile-mammals. Another group of Australian mammals are the marsupials. These are the kangaroo and the wombat, for example. They do not lay eggs, but their young are born before they are fully developed. A little kangaroo crawls into its mother's pouch and stays there for almost three months. Dogs, cats, and rabbits brought to Australia by men are rapidly destroying the gentler marsupials. Tasmanian wolves and Tasmanian devils. Their cubs are born before they are fully developed. Today marsupials are dying out, cause cats and dogs and rabbits, who were exported to Australia many, many years ago, are destroying the gentler marsupials. There is only one marsupial still alive in the USA today- the opossum. But there are also very strange kind of animals, they have hair, like dogs and cats but they also lay eggs- these are the spiny anteater and the platypus. They are only found in Australia and nowhere else in the world and they are called reptile-mammals. Economy The Australian economy is dominated by its services sector, yet it is the agricultural and mining sectors that account for 65% of its exports. Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly grains and wool, and minerals, including

world. Uluru is a sacred place for the Aborigines. Thanks to Australia's isolation, it has plants and animals unlike anywhere else in the world. The kangaroo is the most well-known of them. They have strong back legs and tails, allowing them to travel at high speeds and jump very high and far. The koalas live in eucalyptus trees, sleeping for 18 hours and drinking almost nothing. Both of those animals have pouches for their babies. Two very strange animals are the spiny anteater and the platypus. Their babies are born from eggs but drink milk from their mothers. There are more than 800 kinds of birds in Australia. The emu is a flightless bird. It is up to two metres tall and can run very fast. The first people to inhabit Australia were the ancestors of the Aborigines, who arrived over 40,000 years ago. The first Europeans to sight the Australian continent were the Dutch in 1606. They called what they had found New Holland, but made no attempt at settlement. In 1770, James Cook sailed

The eucalypts are found all over Australia. There are more than 500 varieties of gum trees in Australia. Australia is the home of some 600 species of acacia. These trees develop smaller, leathery leaves to avoid loss of water. Australia has over 155 million hectares of native forest, about 80 per cent of which are eucalypt. driving, which involve not only speed limits, but also factors such as seat belt use and child restraints in vehicles. Wildlife Australia is very famous for being the shelter of some of the most dangerous but also some of the cutest and uncommon creatures on Earth. Unique wildlife - Australia has a unique collection of fauna which is definately worth seeking out. Most are marsupials, such as the emblematic kangaroo and koala. The platypus and echidna are among the few living representatives in the world of mammals that both lay eggs and suckle their young. With just a little effort, visitors can also see Australian native animals in the wild. Beyond the cities, in rural and outback Australia, it's not unusual to see mobs of kangaroo grazing in the late afternoon sun and see the flightless emu going about its business. The dingo, brought to Australia by the Aborigines, is considered the country's native dog

Topic of Australia

The koala is one of the best-loved Australian animals. It is a small marsupial that lives in eucalyptus trees and it can sleep for 18 hours straight. The aborigines named it "the animal that does not drink", but it eats leaves and bark. The wombat is a small animal that has short, but strong legs and claws, which it uses for digging burrows. It lives on Tasmania, but also in burrows in grasslands of Australia. They do not see well, but they can hear and smell very well. The platypus is a strange-looking marsupial that lays eggs. It has a strong flat tail what it uses to swim. It gets its food mainly from rivers and they live in the rivers of East Australia. The possum is most probably the strangest animal in Australia. It is an egg-laying mammal who feeds its babies with milk. It can climb well and therefore lives in trees. They live in groups and they come out to search food only at nights. The Tasmanian devil is a fierce animal that lives on Tasmania. It eats

another. The wombat is a marsupial rat. The koala or pouched bear lives in the gum- trees. It is the loveliest of all the Australian animals. The Tasmanian wolf and the Tasmanian devil, the only native carnivores of Australia, are almost extinct. The egg-laying mammals are the strangest of all Australian animals. They lay eggs like birds and feed their young with milk like mammals do. They form a link between birds and mammals. The duck-bill or platypus lives in the rivers of East Australia mostly. The echidna or spiny ant-eater eats termites. Of many birds the emu, the Australian ostrich, is the biggest. The lyrebird has got its name from he lyre-like tail of the he-bird. He can imitate all kinds of noises. The black swan is also found in Australia only. Many bright coloured parrots, cockatoos and birds of paradise live in the forests. There are few ordinary mammals in Australia. The dingo is a wolflike wild dog

Sissejuhatus biosüstemaatikasse kordamisküsimused ja vastused

1. Milleks on vaja teaduslikku bioloogilist nomenklatuuri? Nomenklatuur on zooloogide ja muude bioloogide ühine erialane keel (et kõik, sh teadlased üksteisest õigesti aru saaksid). Kõigel, mida/keda me kasutame ja vajame, peab olema nimi, mitte kiretu kood. Arvudest koosnev kood sobib hästi arvutile, mitte meie ajule. 2. Milleks on vaja bioloogilise nomeklatuuri koodekseid? 4.
