Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton, Basil Hallward

This proves once again the superficiality of Dorian Gray. To sum up Dorian Gray may look good from the outside but is restless and constantly fighting his demons in the inside. He is not worth anyone's affection or jealousy. Basil Hallward Basil is the perfect example of an isolated artist. He has a talent and his paintings are beautiful but as a perfectionist he is eager to point out mistakes. As art is his true passion, Basil puts his heart and soul into it. That is what makes him a bit paranoid, thinking that some of his paintings reveal too much of himself. He lacks the ability to look himself through other's eyes and understand that even though he may see the world in his work, others see it only as a pretty portrait. Basil struggles with his privacy issues as part of him wishes to share his art with others, but the other part is shy and protective over the paintings. If you get to know him, you'll find out that there is more to Basil than just art. He is a good

the whole family behind, losing a parent while still young, having a handicapped baby, becoming handicapped yourself, suffering from any kind of cancer or some other very serious illness (there are so many, you can never count them up), being in a serious accident and all of the different consequences that might have, having a fire in your home, losing your home, and so on. You can count the things that might happen endlessly. I'm not trying to be paranoid, but the sad fact is, something will happen to every one of us. And that is the hard part of the real life - handling a situation like that. The question is, after sufferings like that, how can people still say that life is beautiful? I guess it's all in your head. Whether you accept that something has happened and you try to make the best out of it and do anything that makes your life great again, or you sit sadly and pity yourself, unable to fix anything

Movie review

if I say to much I'll give away the ending. The way that Scorsese has crafted this film is really remarkable. The scenes are layered in a way where you never really know the true motivations behind many of the characters. A mystery in the truest sense of the word. The acting is top notch as well which just lends more to the mystery. DiCaprio is great as Teddy Daniels a man desperate to find the truth about the island. Even as he becomes more paranoid and distrustful you always feel as if you identify with him and want him to succeed. Another great performance is given by Ben Kingsley as the head psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley he has a calm demeanor but seems reluctant to help in the investigation. You are never quite sure what his intentions are or what he could be hiding. The setting and score simply add to the mysterious and dark tone of the film. The other

10kl.

Rudyard Kipling

During this time the public's love affair with Kipling ended, a trend that was hastened by the increasing harshness of his views. He became a much caricatured figure in the press, whilst the public became tired of constant exhortations. Kipling left South Africa in disgust when the Liberals came to power in Britain, and, as he saw it, destroyed all that had been gained in the Boer war. Until the end of his life, Kipling's world view would be distorted by the paranoid belief that conspiracy and betrayal were everywhere in public life. World War One proved a bracing diversion for the embittered Kipling, who had long predicted that Germany's rivalry with Britain would result in conflict, and who positively revelled in patriotic occasions. He urged his son John to join up, even using his influence to secure the boy a commission. Tragedy ensued when John Kipling disappeared in action only a month after his arrival.

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

self about what is happening to you is called your “interpretive style.” The way you interpret things is a key part of changing your thinking. The question is always whether you interpret things that are happening around you in a positive or negative way. Remember, the optimist sees the glass as half full while the pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Choose to be an optimist. ■ BECOME AN INVERSE PARANOID The multimillionaire W. Clement Stone started off selling newspa- pers on the streets of Chicago at the age of 12. He went on to build Combined Insurance Company of America, and died recently at the age of 100 worth more than $800 million. He was a great inspira- tion to thousands of people, and was famous for his habit of being an “inverse paranoid.

A New Earth

rivers, oceans, and air. Driven by greed, ignorant of their connectedness to the whole, humans persist in behavior that, if continued unchecked, can only result in their own destruction. The collective manifestations of the insanity that lies at the heart of the human condition constitute the greater part of human history. It is to a large extent a history of madness. If the history of humanity were the clinical case history of a single human being, the diagnosis would have to be: chronic paranoid delusions, a pathological propensity to commit murder and acts of extreme violence and cruelty against his perceived “enemies” – his own unconsciousness projected outward. Criminally insane, with a few brief lucid intervals. Fear, greed, and the desire for power are the psychological motivating forces not only behind warfare and violence between nations, tribes, religions, and ideologies, but also the cause of incessant conflict in personal relationships

"Where's your next class?" he asked. I had to check in my bag. "Um, Government, with Jefferson, in building six." There was nowhere to look without meeting curious eyes. "I'm headed toward building four, I could show you the way..." Definitely over-helpful. "I'm Eric," he added. I smiled tentatively. "Thanks." We got our jackets and headed out into the rain, which had picked up. I could have sworn several people behind us were walking close enough to eavesdrop. I hoped I wasn't getting paranoid. "So, this is a lot different than Phoenix, huh?" he asked. "Very." "It doesn't rain much there, does it?" "Three or four times a year." "Wow, what must that be like?" he wondered. "Sunny," I told him. "You don't look very tan." "My mother is part albino." He studied my face apprehensively, and I sighed. It looked like clouds and a sense of humor didn't mix. A few months of this and I'd forget how to use sarcasm. We walked back around the cafeteria, to the south buildings by the gym
