Of monsters and men

The band won an annual battle of the bands competition in Iceland in 2010, that was the start of Of monsters and men. The members are co-singer/guitarist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, co-singer/guitarist Ragnar "Raggi" órhallsson, guitarist Brynjar Leifsson, drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, and bassist Kristján Páll Kristjánsson. Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (born May 6, 1989) is the lead vocalist and guitarist, along with Ragnar "Raggi" órhallsson, of the Icelandic indie folk band Of Monsters and Men. Before Of Monsters and Men had been established, Nanna had a solo musical project called Songbird and was a video store clerk. The two sing about an epic battle between birds and bees, wolves running with the wind in the dark, and a whale--with a house on his back--who gives people rides across the ocean. Ghosts, mythic kings and magical monsters are more to Raggi's liking. He has filled the band's debut album, My Head Is an Animal, with such

FOLKLORE

. th e s w term dom hich do s inan n t b ot elief Sometimes "folklore" is religious in nature, like the tales of the Welsh Mabinogion or those found in Icelandic skaldic poetry. Many of the tales in the Golden Legend of Jacob de Voragine also embody folklore elements in a Christian context, as well as the tales of Old Mr. Brennan. Examples of such Christian mythology are the themes woven round Saint George or Saint Christopher. In this case, the term "folklore" is being used in a pejorative sense. That is, while the tales of Odin the Wanderer have a religious value to the Norse who composed the stories, because it does not fit into a Christian

How do we know? Cf Old English "fyrst" and Modern German "Fürst", Estonian "vürst" (an old Low German loan). In Old English texts we come across several · runic letters · modified Latin letters. Both used to denote sounds that Old English had and Latin did not. Thorn-letter (runic) and edh-letter (modified Latin d) for the // sound (close to t and d) used indiscriminately for both the voiceless and the voiced variant. Thorn, or orn (, ), is a letter in the Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic alphabets. It was also used in medieval Scandinavia, but was later replaced with the digraph th. The letter originated from a rune in the Elder Fuark, called thorn in the Anglo-Saxon and thorn or thurs ("Thor", "giant") in the Scandinavian rune poems, its reconstructed Proto-Germanic name being *Thurisaz. It has the sound of either a voiceless dental fricative, like th as in the English word thick, or a voiced dental fricative, like th as in the English word the. (In Modern Icelandic

latitude. The Baltic Sea causes differences between the climate of coastal and inland areas. The average annual temperature in Estonia is 4.5 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in February, the coldest month of the year, is negative 5.2 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in July, which is considered the warmest month of the year, is 17 degrees Celsius. The climate is also influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, the North- Atlantic Stream and the Icelandic Minimum, which is an area known for the formation of cyclones and where the average air pressure is lower than in neighbouring areas. Estonia is located in a humid zone in which the amount of precipitation outnumbers total evaporation. There are about 160 to 180 rainy days a year, and average precipitation is biggest on the western slopes of the Sakala and Haanja Uplands. Snow cover, which is deepest in the south-eastern part of Estonia, usually lasts from mid-December to late March.

Happily, the book has won acceptance as one of the standard H o l l y w o o d guidebooks for the screenwriting craft. Spy magazine called it "the new industry Bi ble." Through the various international editions (U.K., German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Icelandic, etc.) it has radiated to greater Hollywood, the world community of storytellers. Filmmakers and students from many countries have reported their interest in the Hero's Journey idea and their appreciation for the book as a practical guide for designing and troubleshooting stories. The Writer's Journey, meanwhile, has been put to work in many ways, not only by writers in many forms and genres, but by teachers, psychologists, advertising executives,
