Earlier portions of the story appear later as flashbacks. 4. Catalogs and geneaologies are given. These long lists of objects, places, and people place the finite action of the epic within a broader, universal context. Oftentimes, the poet is also paying homage to the ancestors of audience members. 5. Main characters give extended formal speeches. 6. Use of the epic simile. A standard simile is a comparison using "like" or "as." An epic or Homeric simile is a more involved, ornate comparison, extended in great detail. 7. Heavy use of repetition and stock phrases. It didn't give the freedom to most of the people living in England. It's only aim was to make sure that John and the kings after him wouldn't go beyond his rights as a feudal lord again. The nobles established a committee for that. Another sign of the chaning feudalism was the army. Kings started to pay for soldiers. The Power of the Kings of England. Church and state William had created Norman bishops and given them land for homage. As a result it wasn't sure whether the bishops should obey the king or the church and that led to trouble. Both the kings and popes wanted more power and authority. First big quarrel was between William Rufus and Anselm. Finally they agreed on that only church has the power to make bishops. The crisis came when Henry II's friend Thomas Becket was made the Archbishop of Canterbury. Henry hoped that he will help him bring the church more under his control but Thomas didn't agree to it

Philip Larkin poetry analysis

far/. At first it gives the reader an idea that he is talking about two lovers, but actually he is talking about England and USA. He describes the darkness that is creeping up. In my opinion he is talking about USA, which is beginning to creep up on England or on Europe. And because of that England is becoming a less dominant and more isolated place. He is saying that intimacy is dying and that may represent the globalization. Another political poem I really enjoyed is ´´Homage To a Government´´. Larkin says that next year they are going to bring all the soldiers home, because they (citizens) want the money for them selves. And that their children do not know it's a different country, because they did not achieve anything in the war. But at least they can leave their children some money. I think that Larkin means that the troops are going to be brought home from Vietnam. At the end of almost every line in the first stanza is /And it is all right

Marc Chagall - "Pariisi aastad"

Tema geomeetrilistest struktuuridest said järsult metafoorid, poeetilise tähenduse peamised kandjad. Guillaume Apollinaire nimetas Chagall'i pildilisi maailmu ,,surnaturel" (ebalooduslik), hiljem ,,surreal" (ebareaalne). See kontseptsioon, sürrealism, andis nime kunstivoolule. Nime andja Apollinaire ei olnud niiväga mitte Chagall'i sõber kui tema mentor, kes väsimatult talle näitusekohti organiseerida püüdis. Chagall tänas ka teda, maaliga ,,Austusavaldus Apollinaire- le" (,,Homage to Apollinaire"), kuigi sellel maalil mängib kunstniku kuidagi liiga ambitsioonikalt müstilise tundmatu auraga, kellena Apollinaire Chagalli nägi. Kompositsiooni keskel näeme Aadamat ja Evat õunaga, kaks figuuri esindatud ühena. Selle hermafrodiitse müüdi kõrval on pühendus sõprade nimede ja nelja elemendi lingvistiliste sümbolitega. Ka Chagall'i allkiri on krüpteeritud kujul, ilma täishäälikuteta. See pigem müstiline segu erinevatest salajastest

The Middle Ages

In Scotland things were different. Although they were much stronger than Welsh kings had been, they sometimes accepted English king as their ,,overlord". Since Saxon times marriages had frequently taken place between the Scottish & English royal families. The Scottish kings had offered land to Norman knights from England for their loyalty. Normans married into local Celtic noble families. Some Scottish kings held land in England, just as English kings held land in France & did homage, promising loyalty to the English king for that land. In 1290 a crisis took place over the succession to the Scottish throne. Alexander III was the last Scottish king in direct line from Malcolm Canmore. He died in 1286. The most likely to succeed were John de Balliol & Rober Bruce, born Norman-Scottish knights. Ed I was invited to settle the matter. Now he told both men to do homage to him, then invaded Scotland & put John de Balliol on the Scottish throne. He was king 4 years

Dwight wrote music for the lyrics, and then mailed it to Taupin, and thus began a partnership that continues to this day. In 1967, what would become the first Elton John/Bernie Taupin song, "Scarecrow", was recorded; when the two first met, six months later, Dwight was going by the name "Elton John", in homage to Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. Empty Sky , Elton John's 1969 debut album, went largely unnoticed. The team of John and Taupin joined Dick James's DJM Records as staff songwriters in 1968, and over the next two years wrote material for various artists, like Roger Cook and Lulu. Taupin would write a batch of lyrics in underr an hour and give it to John, who would write music for them in half an hour, dispoosing of the lyrics if he

the risk of his life, approach and contemplate your friend; he who was so vigilant is no more; his pen, the terror of traitors, his pen has slipped from his hand! Grieve! Our tireless friend is dead. He died giving you his last crust of bread; he died without even the means to pay for his funeral. Posterity, you will avenge him; you will tell our descendants how he could have possessed riches if he had not preferred virtue to fortune. . . . To you, my colleagues, I offer my homage with my brush; as you observe the livid and bloody features of Marat, you will remember his virtue, which you must never cease to emulate." The painting itself is very symbolic. In Marat's left hand there is a letter from Corday and beside it a letter with some money to a soldier's widower. This portrays him as a good hearted and humble man, who supports the poor and weak. Furthermore, Marat is writing on an old box that was used as a table

The Witch Trials in Salem

In modern terminology 'witch-hunt' has acquired usage referring to the act of seeking and persecuting any perceived enemy, particularly when the search is conducted using extreme measures and with little regard to actual guilt or innocence. It is used whether or not it is sanctioned by the government, or merely occurs within the "court of public opinion". The first such use reported by the Oxford English Dictionary dates to 1932. Another early instance is George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia (1938). The term is used by Orwell to describe how, in the Spanish Civil War, political persecutions became a regular occurrence. The term is used when a hunt for wrongdoers becomes abused, and a defendant can be convicted merely on an accusation. For example, in the History Channel documentary America: The Story of Us, narrator Liev Schreiberexplains that "the search for runaway slaves becomes a witch hunt. A black man can be convicted with merely an accusation

law of England. Their lands were like independent kingdoms whose rulers could hold courts, build castles and wage war. As the March existed over 450 years, it became a major and lasting element in the history of Wales. *Edward I's conquest of North Wales He was the King of England who achieved historical fame by conquering large parts of Wales and almost succeeding in doing the same to Scotland. Welsh king repeatedly refused to pay homage to Edward so he raised a huge army and began his first campaign against the Welsh prince. After this campaign, the Welsh prince was forced to pay homage to Edward and was stripped with a little territory. His brother started rebellion and was soon joined by the prince and many other Welshmen in a war of national liberation. The war was won by Edward. The Welsh wars damaged the English treasury due to the money spent on new troops and new castles to be built.

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

His conception needs dramatic and tragic expression, and he wants to offer it, but the tensions in his music do not grow from the antagonism of opposites. They are introduced with new themes (Finale). Even with the large amount of Estonian symphonic music this work catches our attention, just with is sincerity and openness of emotion. In its best movements, the composer is uniquely individual. The First Symphony belongs to the treasury of Estonian classical symphonic music. Paying homage to Aavik, Mrs. Juta Kurman stated at the festive concert meeting in the New York Estonian House in January, 1979: Aavik’s music has its own profile, it is clear and elegiac, trying to offer a harmonious language among the restless extremes of the present time, consoling the soul but, first of all, giving aesthetic enjoyment. The silently idealistic mentality of Aavik does not need to be in originality, offering neither great drama, innovating dissonant revolution nor discovering novel idioms
