Othello opens in the stately city of Venice

Iago carefully maneuvers Othello and himself to arrive as Cassio is leaving Desdemona’s audience. Iago points out how Cassio seems to be avoiding Othello. Desdemona for her part immediately begs for Cassio’s pardon, as she has promised him from their meeting. This is all Iago needs to immediately begin planting seeds of doubt in Othello’s mind as to his wife’s fidelity. The ensuing scenes are all a carefully staged dance by Iago in which he finds a dropped handkerchief of Desdemona’s and convinces Othello of her improper actions. He stages yet another carefully monitored conversation with Cassio and finishes the job of hardening Othello’s heart, leading to the climax, and tragedy of the play. Othello arranges with Iago the deaths of both Desdemona and Cassio, his wife at his own hands, in the midst of his jealous anger. Because of her pledge to plea for Cassio, Desdemona only further

When Cassio is about to leave, Othello and Iago return. Cassio leaves without talking to Othello, after what he becomes upset and moody and Iago furthers his goal of removing Cassio and Othello by suggesting that Cassio and Desdemona are involved in an affair. Desdemona's entreaties to Othello to reinstate Cassio as lieutenant add to Othello's almost immediate conviction that his wife is unfaithful. Desdemona finds him feeling unwell and offers him her handkerchief to wrap around his head, but it is too little and he lets it drop to the floor. Later, Emilia picks up the handkerchief and gives it to Iago. He plants it in Cassio's room as an evidence of their affair. Iago tells Othello of the meeting he has planned with Cassio and instructs him to hide nearby and watch as Iago extracts from Cassio the story of his affair with Desdemona. While Othello stands out of earshot, Iago pumps Cassio for information about Bianca, causing Cassio to

Still mad, Jacqueline is taken to her room and watched over by Dr. Bessner, an Austrian. Dr. Bessner is awoken and tends to Simon where his wound is dressed. Both of them appear to have perfect alibis when it is discovered that Linnet has been shot in the head and the letter ,J' has been drawn on the wall in order to frame Jacqueline. The investigation concentrates on the pistol, which is found from the Nile wrapped in a bloody handkerchief. Misleadings appear, such as a bottle thrown into the water at the same time and the theft of Linnet's priceless pearl necklace in which Tim Allerton is the key suspect. While visiting Dr. Bessner's room, Louise Bourget, Linnet's maid, says something to Poirot that implies that she could have seen the murderer. Soon she is discovered in her cabin, stabbed through the heart with a scalpel. There is a torn thousandfranc note

interrupted by Irene's arrival home. She's flushed, excited, happy. Winifred comments on how lovely she looks and how unfair it is on other women. Soames says nothing, but looks stricken. He knows that excitement is not for him. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Park at Timothy's, Swithin is already telling the story to the suitably shocked and titillated Aunts Juley and Hester. He shouldn't wonder if Bosinney was sweet on Mrs. Soames! He tells of catching him "slobbering" on her handkerchief. Swithin is just as captivated by Irene as Bosinney was, as Hester drily comments.Upstairs, the maid Smither tries to wake Aunt Anne, but fails. Aunt Anne is dead. (The crisis has struck deep at the root of the Forsytes: the most primal property-- a man's wife-- has been threatened.)

Each year approximately 45,000 people go to the Waddenzee to be "mud-walkers". The people essentially walk around the muddy canals for fun. There are also places where vacationers can farm and dredge canals. The plough, in its modern form, is a Dutch invention. The Dutch invented the thimble. Many names used for fabrics and patterns came from Holland (cambric came from Cambrai, diaper from d'Apres). The shirt, nightdress, bed tick, pocket handkerchief, tablecloth and napkin were invented in Holland, along with starch. (7) 6 Chapter 2 The history of the Netherlands 2.1 1st dated historical facts Historical accounts of the Netherlands date from the 1st century BC, when Roman forces led by Julius Caesar conquered most of the present area of the country. At the time the region was

attended that morning. They then began playing a game where they would practice picking Fagin's pockets. Two girls with painted faces, Nancy and Bet came to visit the young men, and after drinking spirits, they went out with the young man. The Jew pointed out to Oliver what a nice life the young men led, and Oliver asked if they were done working for the day. Fagin said they were and told Oliver to try to lift the handkerchief from his pocket. Oliver succeeded, and began to learn how to `unmark' them Chapter 10: Oliver spent more time with the Jew, and the other boys each day learning more and more of how to unmark handkerchiefs, and playing the game of picking Fagin's pockets. After a while, Oliver wanted to go out with the boys and do the work they do, and finally Fagin allowed it. On their first day out, Oliver began to get annoyed because the boys weren't doing anything constructive. Then

SCENE II TARTUFFE, DORINE TARTUFFE (speaking to his valet, off the stage, as soon as he sees Dorine is there) Lawrence, put up my hair-cloth shirt and scourge, And pray that Heaven may shed its light upon you. If any come to see me, say I'm gone To share my alms among the prisoners. DORINE (aside) What affectation and what showing off! TARTUFFE What do you want with me? DORINE To tell you . . . TARTUFFE (taking a handkerchief from his pocket) Ah! Before you speak, pray take this handkerchief. DORINE What? TARTUFFE Cover up that bosom, which I can't Endure to look on. Things like that offend Our souls, and fill our minds with sinful thoughts. DORINE Are you so tender to temptation, then, And has the flesh such power upon your senses? rang. I glanced at the clock, saw it was exactly five, and considered ignoring the call because I was technically done for the day. But since I was still feeling shitty about my overly-long lunch, I considered it penance and answered. "Mark Garrity's-" "Eva honey. Richard says you forgot your cell phone at his office." I exhaled in a rush and sagged back into my chair. I could picture the handkerchief wringing that usually accompanied that particular anxious tone of my mother's. It drove me nuts and it also broke my heart. "Hi, Mom. How are you?" "Oh, I'm lovely. Thank you." My mom had a voice that was both girlish and breathy, like Marilyn Monroe crossed with Scarlett Johansson. "Clancy dropped your phone off with the concierge at your place. You really shouldn't go anywhere without it. You never know when you might need to call for someone-"

hope was wasted. Good luck tended to avoid me. Charlie left first, off to the police station that was his wife and family. After he left, I sat at the old square oak table in one of the three unmatching chairs and examined his small kitchen, with its dark paneled walls, bright yellow cabinets, and white linoleum floor. Nothing was changed. My mother had painted the cabinets eighteen years ago in an attempt to bring some sunshine into the house. Over the small fireplace in the adjoining handkerchief-sized family room was a row of pictures. First a wedding picture of Charlie and my mom in Las Vegas, then one of the three of us in the hospital after I was born, taken by a helpful nurse, followed by the procession of my school pictures up to last year's. Those were embarrassing to look at -- I would have to see what I could do to get Charlie to put them somewhere else, at least while I was living here.

But self, though it would intrude, could not engross her. Lydia--the humiliation, the misery she was bringing on them all, soon swallowed up every private care; and covering her face with her handkerchief, Elizabeth was soon lost to everything else; and, after a pause of several minutes, was only recalled to a sense of her situation by the voice of her companion, who, in a manner which, though it spoke compassion, spoke likewise restraint, said, "I am afraid you have been long desiring my absence, nor have I anything to plead in excuse of my stay, but real, though unavailing concern. For example, when a spy writes in iron sulfate, nothing will be visible until it is painted over with a solution of potassium cyanate, when the two chemicals will combine to form ferric ferrocyanide, or Prussian blue, a particularly lovely hue. The colorless writing of lead sub-acetate will turn into a visible brown compound when moistened with sodium sulfhydrate. Copper sulfate can be developed with ammonia fumes, and it may have been this chemical that was used for the secret writing on the handkerchief of George Dasch, leader of the eight Nazi spies who landed by submarine on Long Island in 1942 to blow up American defense plants, railroad bridges, and canal locks. The red letters that appeared as if by magic when the pungent ammonia reached it spelled out the names and addresses of a mail drop in Lisbon and of two reliable sources for help in the United States. Each of the eight saboteurs had also been given a watertight tube containing four or
