Street Art

widewalls.ch/the-history-of-street-art/] 20.12.17) It is an amorphous beast encompassing art which is found in or inspired by the urban environment. With anti-capitalist and rebellious undertones, it is a democratic form of popular public art probably best understood by seeing it in situ. It is not limited to the gallery nor easily collected or possessed by those who may turn art into a trophy. Considered by some a nuisance, for others street art is a tool for communicating views of dissent, asking difficult questions and expressing political concerns. Whether it is regarded as vandalism or public art, street art has caught the interest of the art world and its lovers of beauty. participants conformed at least once. 5% conformed on every trial. This study is referred to as the Asch paradigm and it has been replicated successfully many times, but still the methodology could be criticized. First, there is the question of artificiality and ecological validity. In the original experiment, the task and the use of strangers made the situation atypical. Asch however argues that experiments are social situations in which participants feel like an outsider if they dissent. In addition, there is a concern for demand characteristics, that is, the participants may have acted in a way they felt was required by the features of the experiment. Culture could also have limited the validity, since only one culture was studied. Since culture is dynamic, it is possible that the Asch paradigm is no longer valid today. Ethical considerations also need to be addressed, because of deception and the anxiety the participants felt.

museums, national monuments, capital city squares and stationery. There is also a specific protocol involved in the use of national flags at the headquarters of the United Nations and the European Union. The state, too, specifies the days when the flag is to be flown in the practices of `official flag days'. 14 The flag as a symbol of dissent can be used as protest against authority, against a single action or as an ideological condemnation, but in such cases "the national symbol is manipulated in order to assert moral value over existing power value. The public destruction of national flags is a form of desecration and represents deliberate acts of disrespect. An early example of flags being used in this way include the Jacobite struggle against

The Portuguese regime refused to recognize Indian sovereignty over the annexed territories, which continued to be represented in Portugal's National Assembly until the military coup of 1974. Also in the early 1960s, independence movements in the Portuguese overseas provinces of Angola, Mozambique and Guinea in Africa, resulted in the Portuguese Colonial War (1961 1974). REVOLUTION AND COLONIAL END Throughout the colonial war period Portugal had to deal with increasing dissent, arms embargoes and other punitive sanctions imposed by most of the international community. However, the authoritarian and conservative Estado Novo regime, firstly installed and governed by António de Oliveira Salazar and from 1968 onwards led by Marcelo Caetano, tried to preserve a vast centuries-long intercontinental empire with a total area of 2,168,071 km2. The Portuguese government and army successfully resisted the decolonization of its overseas

Eudoxia Lopukhina in 1689. The marriage was a failure, and ten years later Peter forced his wife to become a nun and thus freed himself from the union. By the summer of 1689, Peter, then age 17, planned to take power from his half-sister Sophia, whose position had been weakened by two unsuccessful Crimean campaigns. When she learned of his designs, Sophia conspired with the leaders of the Streltsy, who continually aroused disorder and dissent. Peter, warned by the Streltsy, escaped in the middle of the night to the impenetrable monastery of Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra; there he slowly gathered adherents who perceived he would win the power struggle. Sophia was eventually overthrown, with Peter I and Ivan V continuing to act as co-tsars. Peter forced Sophia to enter a convent, where she gave up her name and her position as a member of the royal family. Still, Peter could not acquire actual control over Russian affairs

Effect," the phenomenon of a philosophical theory's making a sole exception of itself. (The reference is to Moby Dick: "And I only am escaped alone to tell thee"; actually this is itself a quotation from Job 1:15.) For example: "All we can know is that we can know nothing." "The only moral sin is intolerance." "Absolutely everything is relative." 4 See Achinstein (1965) and Churchland (1988). But on the second point there has been some dissent, such as Fodor (1988). 5 Actually a good thoroughgoing Quinean should not accept this argument. Why not? (Hint: see the previous paragraph.) Notes 197 Chapter 9 1 Here he follows Ziff (1960). 2 "Words" is not quite right. Some meaning atoms are smaller than words: affixes such as "un-" (prefix) and "-able" (suffix). Some words are only pleonastic parts of meaning atoms, as in the French "ne . . . pas
