sophisticated psychology. Rejecting traditional notions of a fixed and determined psychological makeup, Stendhal never defines his characters and instead depicts individuals in the process of becoming. His literary devices (his authorial comments, the improvisational tone of his narration) seem to grant his characters the freedom to discover themselves. Various forms of freedom are Stendhal's ultimate preoccupation, which probably explains why he repeatedly explores the ambiguities of the prison image. True freedom, in the world of Stendhal, reveals itself in the context of the cell, once confinement becomes the symbol of the inner world of dreams and longings. His novels thus illustrate metaphorically the fundamental conflict between the demands of society and those of the individual.

All swans that humans have ever seen are white. Therefore, all swans are white. (probably) A deductive argument is an argument where the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises. All swans are white These birds are swans Therefore, these birds are white (necessarily) Evaluating (deductive) arguments? Evaluating a deductive argument requires answering two questions: 1. Does the conclusion follow from the premises? 2. Are the premises true? Validity To overcome the ambiguities of the commonsense notion of ‘following from’, we introduce the technical notion of validity. Question: 1. ‘Does the conclusion follow from the premises?’ can be rephrased as: 1. Is the argument valid? An argument is valid if it is impossible for its premise(s) to be (all of them) true and its conditions false. In a valid argument, if the premises are all true, then the conclusion is necessarily true. Soundness

These documents are handed over to the builder who is responsible for the execution of ‘means and methods’ complying with the design intent (Allen, Becerik, Pollalis, & Schwegler, 2005). Thus, practice conventions require communication via working drawings that are being translated by contractors, manufacturers, subcontractors, and consultants, for constructability review and shop drawing development (Pietroforte, 1995). The use of complex surfaces creates ambiguities when the designer attempts to transcribe the model into paper format. On complex-shaped buildings, architects are representing the global geometries of external surfaces in 3D – including roofs, cladding, glazing systems, etc. – while component details are supplemented with conventional 2D drawings. What used to be a tedious computational method working with 2D segments of a building is becoming a visual process working with pictorial representations of the

The Scarlet Letter was meant to expose just how much of a sin hypocrisy is, and just how it causes so much pain and suffering. Herman Melville's concern with evil. The combination of scientifically strict treatment of facts of life with fantastic circumstances in Moby Dick. In the writings of Herman Melville, "...the intellectual and moral world appeared as consisting not merely in a duality of good and evil, truth and falsehood, but in endless and souldefying ambiguities." These uncertainties would bring about the whole suspense of the novels in themselves. They were also the very reason why the contemporaries of the time isolated his writings as precarious. In fact, Melville expands upon this idea with his method of presenting his characters as symbols of things much larger and more complex. In his writings, Melville portrays aspects of nature as evil or destructive

A truth definition for a language predicts the felt synonymies, entailments, and other semantic relations by reference to the semantic compounding rules it codifies. And, in part, the contemporary truth-condition theorist studies linguistic constructions in just the same way that Russell worked on descriptions. S/he marshals a whole bunch of meaning facts about a particular kind or group of sentences in which s/he is interested--facts about synonymy relations, ambiguities, entailment relations, and so on--and tries to explain those facts in terms of truth conditions. Russell noted the semantic properties of sentences of this kind or that, especially interesting properties that create logical puzzles, and then asked, how can we put together a theory of such sentences that explains why the sentences exhibit those puzzling semantic features? His answer, as in the Theory of Descriptions, would be a putative truth condition.

T h e more conventional way of ending a story, greatly preferred in Western culture and American movies in particular, is the circular form in which there is a sense of closure and completion. T h e other way, more popular in Asia and in Australian and European movies, is the open-ended approach in which there is a sense of unanswered questions, ambiguities, and unresolved conflicts. Heroes may have grown in awareness in both forms, but in the open-ended form their problems may not be tied up so neatly. 216 R E T U R N W I T H THE ELIXIR THE CIRCULAR STORY F O R M T h e most popular story design seems to be the circular or closed form, in which the narrative returns to its starting point.
