Elizabeth II and the head of fovernment is Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Sport plays a prominent role in English life. Popular team sports in England are football, cricket and rugby. The playing of football in England is documented since at least 1314. England is home to the oldest football clubs in the world, the world's oldest competition and the first ever football league. The modern passing game of football was developed in London in the early 1870s. For these reasons England is considered the birthplace of the game of football or soccer. The national flag of England, known as St. George's Cross, has been the national flag since the 13th century, originally it was used by the Republic of Genoa. There are numerous other symbols, both official and unofficial, including the red rose, the White Dragon and the Three Lions featured on the coat of arms. His weight was about 7 tons.He had a massive skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. Fossils of T. rex have been found in North American rock formations. More than 30 specimens of T. rex have been identified, some of which are nearly complete skeletons. He became extinct 65 million years ago. *QUAGGA: One of Africa's most famous extinct animals, the quagga was a subspecies of the plain zebra. The quagga was hunted to extinction for meat. The last wild quagga was probably shot in the late 1870s, and the last specimen in captivity died on August 12, 1883 at the Artis Magistra zoo in Amsterdam. *IRISH DEAR: The Irish Elk or Giant Deer, was the largest deer that ever lived. It lived in Eurasia, from Ireland to east of Lake Baikal. The Giant Deer is famous for its size (2.1 meters tall+ antlers 3.65 meters) The cause of theis extinction is still unknown. made their discovery that shadows are not brown or black but are coloured by their surroundings, and that the 'local colour' of an object is modified by the light in which it is seen, by reflections from other objects and by contrast with juxtaposed [placed side by side] colours." The styles of Renoir and Monet were almost identical at this time, a sign of the dedication with which they pursued and shared their new discoveries. During the 1870s they continued to work together at times, although their styles generally developed in more personal directions. In 1874 Renoir participated in the first impressionist exhibition; his works included the Opera Box. Of all the impressionists, Renoir most thoroughly adapted the new style to the great tradition of figure painting. Although the impressionist exhibitions were the targets of much public scorn during the 1870s, Renoir's popularity gradually increased during this time

New Zealand's National Anthems The words for "God Defend New Zealand" were written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish immigrant Thomas Bracken. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876. The winner of the competition was John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song became increasingly popular during the 19th century and early 20th century, and in 1940 the New Zealand government bought the copyright and made it New Zealand's national hymn

continue to be recognized as classics today. The Victorian Era was named for Queen Victoria. [10] Later years Victoria never fully recovered from Albert's death in 1861 and she remained in mourning for the rest of her life. Her subsequent withdrawal from public life made her unpopular, but during the late 1870s and 1880s she gradually returned to public view and, with increasingly pro-imperial sentiment, she was restored to favour with the British public. After the Indian Mutiny in 1857, the government of India was transferred from the East India Company to the Crown. In 1877, Victoria became empress of India. Her empire also included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and large parts of Africa

American Literature

Many critics have suggested that there is no clear distinction between realism and its related late nineteenthcentury movement, naturalism. As Donald Pizer notes in his introduction to The Cambridge Companion to American Realism and Naturalism: Howells to London, the term "realism" is difficult to define, in part because it is used differently in European contexts than in American literature. Pizer suggests that "whatever was being produced in fiction during the 1870s and 1880s that was new, interesting, and roughly similar in a number of ways can be designated as realism, and that an equally new, interesting, and roughly similar body of writing produced at the turn of the century can be designated as naturalism" (5). Put rather too simplistically, one rough distinction made by critics is that realism espousing a deterministic philosophy and focusing on the lower classes is considered naturalism

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

By 1900, the British had an empire that covered more than a fifth of the world’s land (about 32 million sq. km.) and included about a fourth of its population (about 427,5 million). ‘The sun never sets in the British Empire’, they said proudly. Why were the British so interested in putting up their flag all over the world? They started with Ireland in the sixteenth century and created the biggest empire in history (the name – the British Empire – came into use in the 1870s). Why did the British want all these countries? The short answer is money and land. The long answer is more complicated. Each country was different. For example, India was a rich market – it was full of customers for British goods. Jamaica was a good military base against the Spanish. Australia was a big ‘empty’ country for British people to go and live in. Most of the colonies were sources of various foods, spices, furs, wood, minerals and so on

Cats

The Annamite cat was described as a slender, small and gracefully built variety of cat with a short tail. Like so many varieties it was said to have disappeared due to interbreeding with introduced domestic cats. Although apparently favoured as palace cats, there is no clear record of an distinct Siamese breed until the 1800s. The British became interested in Siamese cats and imported them from Siam. The earliest documented imports were during the 1870s, but these were apparently not bred. In 1884, the departing British Consul-General Gould was given a Siamese cat by the Siamese king. He brought the cat to England and its progeny were exhibited at Crystal Palace in 1885. The early Siamese cats were round-headed, solid and muscular, but even so, their appearance was so extraordinary that they were described as an "unnatural nightmare of a cat". In Ceylon, the Siamese cat was, for a while, known as "Gould's Cat", having been

would dispense with secrecy altogether). Plaintext went in and plaintext came out, while anyone intercepting the message between the two endpoints would pick up nothing but a meaningless sequence of marks and spaces. Messages were enciphered, transmitted, received, and deciphered in a single operation—exactly as fast as a message in plain English. The advantage was not the mechanical enciphering and printing of the message. That had been accomplished as far back as the early 1870s by two Frenchmen, fimile Vinay and Joseph Gaussin—though not with the speed and ease of a typewriter keyboard. Rather it was the assimilation of encipherment into the overall communication process. Vernam created what came to be called "on-line encipherment" (because it was done directly on the open telegraph circuit) to distinguish it from the old, separate, off-line encipherment. He freed a fundamental process in cryptography from the shackles of time and error. He eliminated a
