ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

What kind of climate do you think Britain has? What is its surface like? What countries are situated on the islands? Which country are we going to study? Why? Location Land and climate affect life in every country. Britain is no exception. Britain is the largest island of the British Isles 1. It is just under 1,000 km long and just under 500 km across in its widest part. Britain is separated from the mainland of Europe by the North Sea on the east and the English Channel on the south – by only about 35 km of water at its closest point (the Strait of Dover 2). Most of the coastline is so broken by bays and inlets that no point on the island is more than 120 km from the sea. Climate and Surface Britain has a mild climate which is influenced by the Gulf Stream, an ocean current which flows past the British Isles and brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico

law of the sea. First there are territorial waters that are covered by the state, then there are contiguous zone and exclusive economic zones and continental shelf. In addition there are international straits, channels and rivers (this is where many have disputes). The idea is that all of them are regulated by international treaties, coastal states don't necessarily have a say. E.g. Panama channel, Suess channel, Bosporus and Dardanelles straits, straits between Sweden and Denmark, Danube river, river Nile Lecture 4 Antarctica Antarctica's unique regime was established by the Antarctic Treaty (Washington, 1 December 1959). Originally signed by 12 countries which were not far from Antarctica or had some explorations there (UK, Japan, South-Africa etc). Initially concluded for 30 years, then prolonged

Some of the things you will learn in THE CODEBREAKERS • How secret Japanese messages were decoded in Washington hours before Pearl Harbor. • How German codebreakers helped usher in the Russian Revolution. • How John F. Kennedy escaped capture in the Pacific because the Japanese failed to solve a simple cipher. • How codebreaking determined a presidential election, convicted an underworld syndicate head, won the battle of Midway, led to cruel Allied defeats in North Africa, and broke up a vast Nazi spy ring. • How one American became the world's most famous codebreaker, and another became the world's greatest. • How codes and codebreakers operate today within the secret agencies of the U.S. and Russia. • And incredibly much more. I called it going into the submarine, a blissful world of concentra tion that called on every cell of my creativity and forced me to articulate my ideas in order to communicate with my creative partners. I could see many ways in which the editing process echoes the writing process, and imagined new possibilities for com bining the two. I learned new principles and gave the old theories a good workout. T h e process of editing seemed to me to be a lot like making a wooden boat, like one of those sleek dragon-ships the Vikings made. T h e spine of the story is like the keel, the major plot points are the ribs, and the individual scenes and lines of dialogue are the planks and rigging that complete the vessel, a vehicle for your vision that you hope will sail on the seas of public attention. Another insight from the editing room was a greater appreciation of the i m portance of focus. I realized that focused attention is one of the rarest things in the

Shaw’s Maltese alleles M+ = Dense colours e.g. black m/m = Maltese (or in our terms dilution) e.g. blue is the maltese of black Shaw's Barrington Brown allele B+ = Normal coat b/b = Barrington Brown Lilac (in Shaw's terminology) would be d/d, m/m = Dilution allele (chocolate) + Maltese allele = lilac. Lilac in modern terminology is b/b, d/d = Chocolate allele + dilution allele = lilac. Although there is no official modern symbol for the lost Barrington Brown, Ba is often used for convenience in modern discussion (since it isn't allocated to anything else). Brown Locus (modern symbols) B/- = Black/Brown (Shaw's black/sepia) b/b = chocolate (Shaw's "standard chocolate dilution") bI/bl = cinnamon (probably not recognised by Shaw) Barrington Brown Locus (modern symbols) Ba/Ba - no Barrington Brown dilution ba/ba - Barrington Brown dilution/recessive brown THE BASIC SELF (SOLID) COLOURS OF CATS Copyright 2002 - 2013 Sarah Hartwell

or you can have negative beliefs about yourself and your potential that act as roadblocks to the realization of everything that is truly possible for you. The most harmful beliefs you can have are your self-limiting be- liefs. These are beliefs about yourself and your potential that hold you back. Most of them are not true. Most of them are the result of information you have accepted without question, often from early childhood. Even if it is completely untrue, if you believe yourself to be limited in areas such as achieving wonderful health and happi- ness and earning a lot of money, that will become your truth. As the author Richard Bach in his book Illusions wrote, “Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they’re yours.” ccc_tracy_fm_i-xviii.qxd 7/7/03 3:23 PM Page xvii

The 4-Hour Body - An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman - Timothy Ferriss

I retold it to dozens of people over the subsequent month, and the response was always the same: agreement and nodding. This book, it seemed, had to be written. The wider world thinks I'm obsessed with time management, but they haven't seen the other --much more legitimate, much more ridiculous--obsession. I've recorded almost every workout I've done since age 18. I've had more than 1,000 blood tests1 performed since 2004, sometimes as often as every two weeks, tracking everything from complete lipid panels, insulin, and hemoglobin A1c, to IGF-1 and free testosterone. I've had stem cell growth factors imported from Israel to reverse "permanent" injuries, and I've own to rural tea farmers in China to discuss Pu-Erh tea's e ects on fat-loss. All said and done, I've spent more than $250,000 on testing and tweaking over the last decade. Just as some people have avant-garde furniture or artwork to decorate their homes, I have
