American sports Football History Football came from England, it was a mix of rugby and soccer. Professional Football in America started in 1895, soon after the colleges started playing. Then in the 1922 the league was called the NFL. Football History The NFL consisted of only 10 teams, from 19461949, then gradually grew more. By 1970 there were two divisions the AFL and NFL. NFL had 16 teams and the AFL had 10 teams Then in 1993 the NFL consisted of 30 teams and only 2 more teams have joined since then. Baseball History Baseball is known throughout America as the National Pastime. The inventor of baseball was Alexander Joy Cartwright who lived in Cooperstown New York. In the early 1900s1920 baseball was known as Dead Ball because they would use the same ball throughout the entire game. SPORT In English the word ‘sport’ describes both casual play and the highest levels of performance. Recent surveys reveal that 10% of adults play sports more than twice a week, the majority of the British population involves in sport or physical recreation at least once a month. Most people have an interest in some sports as a player, spectator or gambler, but everybody in Britain seems to be fond of outdoor exercise, be it jogging, walking, rambling or just sitting on the bench outdoors. As British homes are rather cool in winter (at least for Estonians!), the saying goes that ‘the English like fresh air outdoors and indoors’. Most people are conscious of the good influence of sport on their health. Topic The United States of America The U.S.A. is situated in the central part of the North American continent. The area of the U.S.A. is over nine million square kilometres. Its western coast is washed by Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast by the Atlantic ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The continental United States is bounded to the North by Canada and to the South by Mexico. There are two mountain ranges in the continental United States: the Appalachians in the east and the Rockies in the west. In the very middle of the continent is the Mississippi river. Canada Geography The geography of Canada is vast and diverse. Occupying most of the northern portion of North America, Canada is the world's second largest country in total area. The highest point in Canada is Mount Logan 6,050 m, which is in the Yukon. The two principal river systems are the Mackenzie and the St. Lawrence. The St. Lawrence, with its tributaries, is navigable for over 3,058 km. The largest lake situated entirely in Canada is Great Bear Lake at 31,328 km2 in the Northwest Territories. The largest lake which is at least partly in Canadian territory is Lake Superior Climate Canada's climate is as diverse as its landscape. Generally, Canadians enjoy four very distinct seasons, particularly in the more populated regions along the US border. Daytime summer temperatures can rise to 35°C and higher, while lows of -25°C are not uncommon in winter. More moderate temperatures are the norm in spring and fall.
