Kristel Sepp TIK IB 09.10.09 "You can never go home again" "Lord of the flies" The quote "You can never go home again" is related to "Lord of the flies" in both literal and metaphorical sense. Luckily most of the boys could go home in a literal sense but unfortunately some of them were dead by the time rescuers came to save them. When boys were left on the island alone the savages inside them started to appear and there were few quite good reasons for that. The experience on the island changed all of them and when they were finally rescued everyone went home as sort of different persons. In the beginning when boys had just discovered that they are alone in this paradise island they were all innocent and longed for rescue but towards the end they gradually turned into savages who painted their faces, hunted and were willing to kill each other. I would fain do so; I pray Your highnesses to pardon me. I am so ruined as I have said; hitherto I have wept for others; now, Heaven have mercy upon me, and may the earth weep for me. Of worldly goods, I have not even a blanca for an offering in spiritual things. Here in the Indies I have become careless of the prescribed forms of religion. Alone in my trouble, sick. in daily expectation of death. and encompassed about by a million savages, full of cruelty and our foes, and so separated from the holy Sacraments of Holy Church, my soul will be forgotten if it here leaves my body. Weep for me, whoever has charity, truth, and justice. I did not sail upon this voyage to gain honor or wealth; this is certain, for already all hope of that was dead. I came to Your Highnesses with true devotion and with ready zeal, and I do not lie. I humbly pray Your Highnesses that if it please God to bring me
Cinemas now also show Australian films. History Australia may well be the home of the worlds first people. Stone tools were discovered in New South Wales, in 1971. It shows that humans lived in Australia at least twelve thousand years before they appeared in Europe. The first Europeans to arrive in Australia were the Dutch who tried to reach the East Indies, but landed on the western coast in 1611. They thought Australia was an arid land inhabited by fierce savages. In 1770 captain James Cook discovered the eastern coast and had a better outlook. He explored the coast and named it the Botany Bay because he found many unknown plants there. In 1788 about 700 British convicts and 200 marines arrived at Botany Bay and on the plain around Sydney the first settlement was founded. The British were very interested in the colonization of Australia because the loss of American colonies .In 1814 the continent became known as Australia- the land of the south.

Abel Tasman was also a Dutch sailor and he discovered Tasmania. Captain James Cook discovered the fertile eastern coast in 1770 and had a more favourable outlook. He explored the coast and named some most important features, such as Botany Bay, for instance. Australia was called Terra Australis Incognita before 1770 and it means `southland'. After the disgraceful loss in the American War of Independence, Britain

In addition to the wall, the Romans built a system of small forts called milecastles. Sixteen larger forts holding from 500 to 1000 troops were built into the wall, with large gates on the north face. To the south of the wall the Romans dug a wide ditch with high earth banks. *The Picts, Caledonia The Romans called Scotland 'Caledonia' because the dominant tribe of Picts they encountered was the Calidonii. Romans thought they were barbarian savages, but actually they had an advanced, cultured society. There was no slavery amongst them and women for instance had a higher standing than in Roman society. The Picts fought the Romans. The Picts- ,,The Painted Ones"- spoke Pict-Celtic. *The Scots, Hibernia In early medieval times Ireland was known by the name "Hibernia". long term its effect on the growth of nationalism was probably more significant. In the U.S, romantic Gothic literature made an early appearance with Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) and Rip Van Winkle (1819), followed from 1823 onwards by the Leatherstocking Tales of James Fenimore Cooper, with their emphasis on heroic simplicity and their fervent landscape descriptions of an alreadyexotic mythicized frontier peopled by "noble savages", similar to the philosophical theory of Rousseau, exemplified by Uncas, from The Last of the Mohicans. There are picturesque "local color" elements in Washington Irving's essays and especially his travel books. Edgar Allan Poe's tales of the macabre and his balladic poetry were more influential in France than at home, but the romantic American novel developed fully with the atmosphere and melodrama of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850)
In the 1970s and earlier 80s, Negro Americans decided that they wanted to be known and called Blacks. And then from the middle of the 1980s till now, Blacks decided instead to be known and called African- Americans. But it was in the 1960s that a few Black leaders decided to invest time to know where African-Americans came from. Until then, African-Americans had been ashamed of their African ancestry. Here we are, all looking alike. But on television and film, Africans were depicted as savages. The Tarzan movies were the yardstick through which African-Americans came to know about Africans. Africans did nothing but carried spears and bow and arrows. Nowhere did Tarzan go without his monkey and the lone African who behaved much the same way as the monkey. It was a scene repeated over and over, day in day out, and the Caucasian American decided that Blacks were no more intelligent than the Africans that Tarzan interacted with.
