SWEDISH FOOD

Koostas: Martin Aulik introduction It’s safe to say Sweden’s food culture is much more than iconic meatballs and chewy fish- shaped candy. Here are eight things you should know about food traditions essential to Sweden everyday dining. Lingonberry — Sweden’s favorite sauce Just like ketchup and mustard, lingonberry sauce is widely used to accompany a variety of dishes, from meatballs and pancakes to porridge and blood pudding. But despite its sweetness, it is rarely used on bread. Thanks to the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten), which gives everyone the freedom to roam and enjoy nature, many Swedes grow up picking lingonberries in the forest, and using these tiny tart red fruits to make the jam-like preserve. Open sandwiches When you order a sandwich, don’t be surprised if it involves just a single slice of bread.

The old and the young should live under the same roof

The old and the young should live under the same roof Living under the same roof with different generations have positive and negative sides. Many people just can not take it to live with their grandparents, the other can. Should the old and the young livr under the same roof? Firstly, the positive sides are that the old ones do all the work that you do not want to do. They clean and cook. In the mornings you can eat homemade warm pancakes with jam. They do all things you want, they even give money to you. Secondly, there are some negative sides too. You do not have so much private space. Grandparents are so worried about you, the want to know that you are fine. They are sometimes so snoopy and annoying. I think that living with the old have some pros and cons. People are different- somebody want to live with their grandparents, somebody not.

The Best Grandfather

The Best Grandfather My grandfather was good-humoured and warm man. He was always sweet and kind to me. I think he should be as a rolemodel to every man in the world. He was the person who taught me to play piano, to make pancakes and I even learned from him how to swim. My grandfather was always there for me and gave me the perfect advice that I needed. He was there with me at every event that was important for me, for example he was there listening to my every piano concert although I know that these were always very boring for him. I remember him sitting on the couch, listening to the radio and thoughtfully, quiatly solving the crossword. He was very good at these, because he was incredibly smart. At that time he

talking about our weekends. Sometimes, later at that night, we go to some party. There are many people and usually we are talking, dancing and laughing. About at 03.00 I´m always at home sleeping. It´s Saturday morning, or should I say afternoon. Usually I wake around 12.00 . Then I will eat ``breakfast`` and watch TV. At Saturday I like to be at home. I just rest and chat in computer and talk with my parents. At 5 o´clock we go to my granny´s house. I love to be there. She makes so good pancakes with apple-jelly. Also her house is very homely and cosy. Sometimes we stay there for night to, but not often. If we don´t be there for night we will go back home. Then I will go out with my friends agen. Usually on Saturday I´m allready home at 23.00. Now I will watch TV and chat in the computer. At 01.00 I´m sleeping. Now it´s Sunday. I wake up about at 11.00 o´clock. The Pilgrim Fathers

On November 9th, 1620, the `Mayflower' sighted what is now Cape Cod. Despite seeing land, the crew of the `Mayflower' searched for another month to find somewhere to land. Where they eventually landed was called New Plymouth. On December 25th, after finding a place where the `Mayflower' could be safely anchored, the Pilgrim Fathers began to build the first house for common use. By February 1621, 50% of the Pilgrim Fathers had died as a result of the cold weather and the inadequate housing that they had built for themselves. A Native American called Squanto helped those Pilgrim Fathers who survived the harsh winter. He showed them how to sow maize and how to cultivate the crop. Seeds brought from England were of little use in their new environment. By the summer of 1621, the Pilgrim Fathers had built houses for themselves and had gathered up a small harvest. They were well recovered in health and strength, and had all things in good plen...

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras in the USA Mardi Gras, from the French words meaning "Fat Tuesday," combines religious tradition with a carnival or festival to welcome spring. It is also called Shove Tuesday or Pancake Day (in UK pancakes have an important role in celebrating Mardi Gras). Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival- a festival season. Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas on January 6 and ends on Mardi Gras, which always falls exactly 47 days before Easter. The date of Mardi Gras changes every year. In the year 2008 it is on the 5th of February. "Fat Tuesday" is also the last day that Catholics can eat meat before Lent, the forty-day period of fasting before Easter

or "Fat Tuesday" is celebrated all over the world with fun, games, and a lot of eating. The official colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold signifies power. There is no general theme for Mardi Gras, but each individual parade depicts a specific subject. Among the more popular subjects have been history, children's stories, legends, geography, famous people and entertainment. Pancakes are a traditional food. The Flambeaux Tradition Lighting up the sky with heavy blazing torches, the flambeaux carrier originally served as a beacon for parade-goers to better enjoy the spectacle of night festivities. The flambeaux carriers were originally slaves. Crowds tossed coins to slaves trying to earn money for their task of lighting the way for the floats - a custom that continues today. Now, the torches may be lighter and use butane or

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, a Christian fast which lasts for 40 days before Easter. In the past, Christians used up all their milk, butter and eggs on Shrove Tuesday because they were not allowed to eat them during Lent. Pancake races are often arranged for women in which competitors carry a pancake in a frying pan and have to toss the pancake into the air, catching it again in the pan. Very thin, flat, round pancakes are usually eaten with lemon juice and sugar. 5. What is a Cockney? (people and language) Traditionally, a true Cockney is anybody born within the sound of Bow bells (the bells of the church of St Mary-le-Bow). In fact the term is commonly used to denote people who come from a wider area of the innermost eastern suburbs of London and also an adjoining area south of the Thames. `Cockney' is also used to describe a

village. They use a concrete shelter for a dugout and take advantage of the opportunity to eat and sleep as much as they can. They take a large mahogany bed, mattresses, and blankets into their dugout because they rarely have access to such luxuries. They collect eggs and butter, and they have the luck to find two suckling pigs. They collect fresh vegetables and cook a grand dinner in a well-outfitted kitchen near the dugout. Paul makes pancakes while the others roast the pigs. Unfortunately, the enemy sees the smoke rising from the chimney and bombs the house. As the attack begins, the men gather the food and make a dash for the dugout. Paul finishes cooking the pancakes while the bombs fall around him. Once he finishes, he grabs the plate of pancakes and manages to get to the dugout without losing a single one. The meal lasts four hours. Eating the way you suggest has changed my hunger even; I never get that strange cramp- hunger feeling that sugar and "bad" carbs create. It's maybe also because I'm eating more, and more regularly. Just eating breakfast early in the morning instead of coffee and toast or a pastry at 11am has made a huge difference. I'm thinking about fueling my body, not restricting it. I ate really well all last week and then assigned Sunday as my "free day." I ate pancakes and an omelet at the IHOP (very healthy). Then I felt like crap. All the cheese made me want to throw up.
