Demographics
With an estimated population of 1.2 billion,
India is the world's second most populous
country. The last 50 years have seen a rapid
increase in population due to medical advances
and massive increase in agricultural
productivity due to the "green revolution".
The percentage of Indian population living in
urban areas has consistently grown; from 1991
to 2001, India's urban population increased by
31.2%. In 2001, about 285 million Indians lived
in urban areas while more than 70% of India's
population resided in rural areas. As per the
2001 census, there are twenty seven million-
plus cities, with the largest cities being Mumbai,
Delhi and Kolkata.
English is used extensively in business and
administration and has the status of a
subsidiary official language; it is also important
in education, especially as a medium of higher
education. In addition, every state and union
territory has its own official languages, and the
constitution also recognises in particular 21
"scheduled languages".
India's literacy rate is 64.8% (53.7% for females
and 75.3% for males). The state of Kerala has
the highest literacy rate at 91% while Bihar has
the lowest at 47%.The national human sex ratio
is 944 females per 1,000 males.
According to the World Health Organization,
900,000 Indians die each year from drinking
contaminated water and breathing in polluted
air.There are about 60 physicians per 100,000
people in India.
Bollywood
Bollywood is the informal term popularly used
for the Hindi-language film industry based in
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The term is often
incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian
cinema; it is only a part of the total Indian film
industry, which includes several regional film
industries sorted by language.
Bollywood is the largest film producer in India
and one of the largest centers of film production
in the world.
Bollywood films are
multi-million dollar
productions, with the
most expensive
productions costing up to
100 crores rupees
(roughly USD 20 million).
Sets, costumes, special effects, and
cinematography were less than world-class up until
the mid-to-late 1990s, although with some notable
exceptions.
Bollywood sold 3.6 billion
tickets and had total
revenues (theatre tickets,
DVDs, television etc.) of
US$1.3 billion, whereas
Hollywood films sold 2.6
billion tickets and
generated total revenues
(again from all formats)
of US$51 billion.
Bollywood's biggest problem is piracy - where
people copy the films and either sell them or
show them to other people for free.
At the moment not all films made make more
money than they cost to make, even though
they can be seen by around one billion people.

because America has exported them to other countries. Nowadays ofcourse spreads American culture the Internet and TV. Pop culture is Heavily influenced by mass media (at least from the early 20th century on) and perpetuated by that culture's vernacular language, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society. America's pop culture is widely spread into Europe, but not very much into the East countries, because India has Bollywood and it is as huge as Hollywood. Of course America has stolen some ideas from other countries, like Japan, where there are very many TV shows and comedy shows. Pop culture is meant for the masses. Pop music is a wide variety of styles which are with good rhythm and meaningful lyrics so it must be for big masses. The most movies we have watched are made in Hollywood, so about 90% of them are the American culture spreaders. We get our slang words from the movies or from the songs

Scandinavian Vikings already had settlements here in the eleventh century, and British fisherman probably fished the shores of Canada for decades before Columbus. The first European explorer to thoroughly document his visit to North America was the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto, who sailed for England's King Henry VII and became known by his anglicized name, John Cabot. Caboto arrived in 1497 and claimed North America for the English sovereign while Columbus was still searching for India in the Caribbean. Unable to celebrate Columbus' exploration as a great discovery, some apologists now want to commemorate it as the great "cultural encounter." Contrary to popular legend, Columbus did not prove that the world was round; educated people had known that for centuries. The Egyptian-Greek scientist Erastosthenes, working for Alexandria and Aswan, already had measured the circumference and diameter of the world in the third century B.C. Did Columbus "discover" America
