Empire grow into a powerful industrial nation. Tesla and Edison crossed paths in technological struggle. Tesla also worked with Marconi. Others made fortunes with his inventions, but Tesla was penniless and rejected as he failed to protect his commercial interests. Ely Whitney

Whitney worked as a farm laborer and schoolteacher to save money. He prepared for Yale at Leicester Academy (now Becker College) and under the tutelage of Rev.Elizur Goodrich of Durham, Connecticut he entered the Class of 1789. Whitney expected to study law but, finding himself short of funds, accepted an offer to go to South Carolina as a private tutor. Instead of reaching his destination, he was convinced to visit Georgia. Georgia was a magnet for New Englanders seeking their fortunes. He invented the cotton gin, which was the beginning of his success. After he failed in his cotton gin business, Whitney worked with interchangeable parts. Whitney is most famous for two innovations which later divided the United States in the mid- 19th century: the cotton gin (1793), and his advocacy of interchangeable parts. In the South, the cotton gin revolutionized the way cotton was harvested and reinvigorated slavery. While in the

He claimed this part of the land for the King of England. In 1851 gold was discovered about 300 km west of Sydney. People rushed to the gold fields to find their fortunes. This attracted robbers called bushrangers. The Aborigines are the Australian natives that had been living there for thousands of years before the first Europeans came to Australia in the 1600s. The flag of Australia is the only one to fly over a whole continent. The small Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the

of the national money income, while 90 per cent recieve the remaining 55 per cent. The distribution of property is even more uniequal. 1 per cent of the population own 60 per cent of the saleable assets of the nations. Individual incomes range from £1 000 000 a year to £50 per year. This extreme degree of inequality is due to the right of inheritance at present vested in the legal institution of property. Large individual fortunes are, for the most part, made up of inherited property. The rich, as a class, are born with silver spoon in their mouths and the economic privileges that they enjoy were not acquired by the possession or exercise of great talents, but by the accident of birth. Social inequality. The apparatus of social hierarchy is amazingly complete. It is manifest in the Court with its great expense and elaborate display; the country house with its ancient

Many started sheep farms. Before long Australia became the greatest wool-producing country in the world. In some cases cattle were raised on the grassland instead of sheep. But beef and butter are not as easy to ship as wool. The Gold Rush Gold was discovered in southeastern Australia in 1851. There was a great gold rush. Thousands of people went to the new land to find their fortunes. Gold was dug by hand, without any mining machinery. There was so much of it in the ground that some lucky gold- diggers found twenty to thirty kilograms of gold in an hour. By 1852 the country was gold-mad. Everybody was leaving for the goldfields, and all normal work stopped. In the countryside the cattle were left to starve and the crops were not harvested. In the towns all shops were shut, no letters were delivered, no newspapers appeared.

Britain soon started to send convicts to the new country. In May 1787 eleven ships left England for Australia carrying about 1,500 people, half of whom were convicts and the other half their guards. They reached Port Jackson - now Sydney - in January 1787. Life was very difficult and the convicts had to work very hard making roads, buildings and farms. In 1851 gold was found in New South Wales and Victoria. There was a great gold rush. Thousands of people came to Australia to find their fortunes. In ten years the population grew from 400,000 to 1,200,000. Forty years later there was another gold rush. This time gold was discovered in the west. With gold came new roads, railways and growing cities. On 1 January 1901 all the six separate states of Australia united into one country. Many people left Britain for a new life in Australia. After 1945 people from other European countries, like Italy, Greece, Germany and Holland, began coming to Australia

Shortly after the acquisition of Burger King by TPG Capital, L.P. in 2002, its newly hired CEO Bradley (Brad) Blum set about turning around fortunes of the company by initiating an overhaul its flailing advertising programs. One of the first moves by the company was to reinstate its famous Have it your way slogan as the corporate motto. BK handed the effort off to its new advertising agency, Miami-based Crispin Porter + Bogusky (abbreviated as CP+B). CP+B was known for having a hip, subversive tack when creating campaigns for its clients, exactly what BK was looking for. One of CP+B strategies was to revive the Burger King

Silicon Valley

It's the young nerds who start startups, so it's those specifically the city has to appeal to. The startup hubs in the US are all young-feeling towns. This doesn't mean they have to be new. Cambridge has the oldest town plan in America, but it feels young because it's full of students. What you can't have, if you want to create a silicon valley, is a large, existing population of stodgy people. It would be a waste of time to try to reverse the fortunes of a declining industrial town like Detroit or Philadelphia by trying to encourage startups. Those places have too much momentum in the wrong direction. You're better off starting with a blank slate in the form of a small town. Or better still, if there's a town young people already flock to, that one. The Bay Area was a magnet for the young and optimistic for decades before it was associated with technology

witchcraft realising that many maladies and mishaps have natural causes. Eventually however educated people gradually stopped believing in witches and magic. During the 18th century it became fashionable to regard witchcraft as just a superstition. In England the last execution for witchcraft was in 1684. By 1736 attitudes had changed so much that laws against witchcraft were repealed in England. They were replaced by a law that made it illegal to pretend to cast spells or tell fortunes. The last legal execution for witchcraft in Europe was in Switzerland in 1782. The Salem witch trials The witch hysteria The witch hysteria in Salem began in January 1692. Certain Islamist groups like the Taliban have sought to continue traditional law as applied to women. Calendar The formal beginning of the Muslim era was chosen to be the Hijra in 622 CE, which was an important turning point in Muhammad's fortunes. The assignment of this year as the year 1 AH (Anno Hegirae) in the Islamic calendar was reportedly made by Caliph Umar. It is a lunar calendar, with nineteen ordinary years of 354 days and eleven leap years of 355 days in a thirtyyear cycle. Islamic dates cannot be converted to CE/AD dates simply by adding 622 years: allowance must also be made for the fact that each Hijri century corresponds to only 97 years in the Christian calendar

Just so I think there's naught more odious Than whited sepulchres of outward unction, Those barefaced charlatans, those hireling zealots, Whose sacrilegious, treacherous pretence Deceives at will, and with impunity Makes mockery of all that men hold sacred; Men who, enslaved to selfish interests, Make trade and merchandise of godliness, And try to purchase influence and office With false eye-rollings and affected raptures; Those men, I say, who with uncommon zeal Seek their own fortunes on the road to heaven; Who, skilled in prayer, have always much to ask, And live at court to preach retirement; Who reconcile religion with their vices, Are quick to anger, vengeful, faithless, tricky, And, to destroy a man, will have the boldness To call their private grudge the cause of heaven; All the more dangerous, since in their anger They use against us weapons men revere, And since they make the world applaud their passion, And seek to stab us with a sacred sword.

It is what created the fortunes of people like Rockfellers; it is what created companies like Standard Oil which was broken up to become the juggernauts like Exxon, Mobil, Texaco, etc. A lot of the Africa countries possess oil in abundance, including countries like Nigeria, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Libya, Equatorial Guinea and others (now Ghana). Most necessary 'tis that we forget To pay ourselves what to ourselves is debt: What to ourselves in passion we propose, The passion ending, doth the purpose lose. The violence of either grief or joy Their own enactures with themselves destroy: Where joy most revels, grief doth most lament; Grief joys, joy grieves, on slender accident. This world is not for aye, nor 'tis not strange 101 That even our loves should with our fortunes change; For 'tis a question left us yet to prove, Whether love lead fortune, or else fortune love. The great man down, you mark his favourite flies; The poor advanced makes friends of enemies. And hitherto doth love on fortune tend; For who not needs shall never lack a friend, And who in want a hollow friend doth try, Directly seasons him his enemy. But, orderly to end where I begun, Our wills and fates do so contrary run That our devices still are overthrown;

Vernam, with no seniority, was soon out. He went to Postal Telegraph Cable Company, which merged with Western Union. His inventive spark flared from time to time, and he was granted 65 patents in all, among them such important noncryptologic items as the semiautomatic torn- tape relay system, the push-button switching systems, and finally the fully automatic telegraph switching system, all for the Air Force's 200,000-mile domestic network. But the reversal in his personal fortunes seemed to depress him. Each night he sank deeper and deeper into the newspaper. Finally, on February 7, 1960, after a long bout with Parkinson's disease, the man who had automated cryptography died in obscurity in his home in Hackensack, New Jersey. The history of science is replete with coincidence. Adams and Leverrier deduced the existence of Neptune almost simultaneously. They agree with me in apprehending that this false step in one daughter will be injurious to the fortunes of all the others; for who, as Lady Catherine herself condescendingly says, will connect themselves with such a family? And this consideration leads me moreover to reflect, with augmented satisfaction, on a certain event of last November; for had it been otherwise, I must have been involved in all your sorrow and disgrace. As one study of retail sales showed, feeling responsible for getting a better deal led to more satisfaction with the process and more repurchases of the product (Schindler, 1998). Defense Against a requester who employs the rule for reciprocation, you and I face a formi- dable foe. By presenting us with either an initial favor or an initial concession, the requester will have enlisted a powerful ally in the campaign for our compliance. At first glance, our fortunes in such a situation would appear dismal. We could com- ply with the requester's wish and, in so doing, succumb to the reciprocity rule. Or, we could refuse to comply and thereby suffer the brunt of the rule's force upon our deeply conditioned feelings of fairness and obligation. Surrender or suffer heavy casualties. Cheerless prospects indeed. Fortunately, these are not our only choices. With the proper understanding of
