Town Wall and its Towers The first town wall of Tallinn, which was rather low and modest, was built in the second half of the 13th century. It was called Margaret's Wall by the Danish queen Margaret in 1265. In 1310 Johan Canne was appointed Viceregent of Tallinn and he started the re- construction of the wall, known as Canne Wall. The wall was completed by 1355. The wall was 6.5 metres high and 2.3 metres thick and had 14 towers. The defence gallery ran along the inside of the wall. In the first half of the 15th century the wall was reconstructed again. The wall was made higher and thicker. It was 11-16 metres high. The tower of Tall Hermann was built. In the

located on the north end of Pikk Street. The Great Coastal Gate and Fat Margaret's Tower are two of Tallinn's most remarkable and outstanding defensive constructions. The gate and tower were built to protect the city from the sea side and are very impressive when viewed from the harbor. Fat Margaret's Tower is now home to the Estonian Maritime Museum. London - sillad, tornid, ajalugu

THE CITY OF LONDON History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by Romans. The Romans also built a bridge over the Thames and there has been one in the same area ever since. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the bridge. In AD 61 the native Celtic tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against the Romans. They burnt down Londinium to the ground and killed most of its inhabitants. Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca and Londinium was rebuilt. At the end of the fourth century AD the Roman Empire began to crumble and the Roman armies were recalled from Britain to defend Rome itself. Once they had left, tribes such as Angles, Saxons and Jutes invaded and settled in from Holland, Germany and Denmark. Together they are known as Anglo-Saxons. They were farming people who preferred living outside towns. For a while London p

used as a gunpowder storage and storehouse. Today the tower tells the story of the birth and development of Tallinn and the most important military events from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The external wall still holds stone and iron cannonballs from Russian tsar Ivan IV. The Great Coastal Gate, built along with the city wall, is situated on the northern side of the Old Town, near the harbour. During the reconstruction of the gate in the early 16th century, the cannon tower Fat Margaret was added. The round tower, with 155 loopholes, a diameter of 25 meters, and a height of about 20 meters, was built to protect the harbour. It got its name from the fact that it was indeed the stoutest tower in the city wall. Through history, the cannon tower has also served as a storehouse for gunpowder and weapons, and as a prison. Fat Margaret now houses the Estonian Maritime Museum. The viewing platform on the roof affords a lovely view onto the Old Town and the bay. The Down Hall

The City on London

The City of London History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up the entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by the Romans. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the "London Bridge" in the past. Products such as olive oil, wines and fruit were brought by ships from different parts of the Roman Empire and unloaded onto wooden quays along the river. In AD 61 the native Celtic Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against The Romans. They burnt Londinium to the ground but Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca. The city was rebuilt and was gradually surrounded with a wall of stone and brick which lasted for many centuries. During the archeological excavations in 1954 the Roman Temple of Mithras was revealed. It was a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian Sun-god. The Temple was later reconstructed only a short way from its original site and the relics are display

Lower Town The Town Wall encircling the Lower Town is one of the greatest medieval treasures of Tallinn. It was begun in the 13th century, completed in the 14th and constantly improved and strengthened thereafter. The walls were 2.5 metres thick on average, over 2 km long, and their height reached 15-16 metres. The wall was fortified by 27 towers, 18 of which have survived. In Tower Square you can admire several of them. The strongest are the cannon towers Fat Margaret and Kiek in the Kök (Peep into the Kitchen). Many towers in the Town wall have been restored as fine restaurants, cafés and intimate concert calls. Two-thirds of the old wall have survived, making it one of the most special medieval sights in Tallinn. The Tallinn Town Hall The Town Hall, the centre of administration and judicial power, was definitely the most important public building in the Middle Ages. The Tallinn Town Hall was first recorded in 1322, but there must
