- There are 4 idols (obstacles) to true knowledge 1. Idols of he Tribe: - false illusions caused by the human nature - argues against Protagoras ("man is the measure of all things") - all perceptions of senses and mind are according to the measure of the individual and not the universe - human understanding is like a false mirror, which distorts and discolours the nature my mixing its own nature with it. 2. Idols of the Cave: - private obsessions or preoccupations caused by education, conversation, reading throw people off the track in the search for truth 3. Idols of Market-place: - illusions due to the use of language - people tend to rely on false but plausible technical terms, which often mask the truth 4
6 5. LSD LSD (or its full name: lysergic acid diethylamide) is a potent hallucinogen that dramatically alters your thoughts and your perception of reality. It was discovered in 1938 in a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. LSD is one of the strongest hallucinogenic drugs. It can disrupt the normal functioning of your brain, possibly for the short term, or possibly for life. By disturbing the normal functioning of the brain, LSD distorts visual judgment, sensations, moods and feelings. And these changes can quickly become frightening. Some users experience terrifying thoughts, feelings of despair, fear of losing control, fear of insanity or even death. When you're completely unable to get a grip on reality, it becomes very easy for an unexpected, fatal accident to happen. Flashbacks are a strange but relatively common experience of LSD use. Suddenly and without warning, a few days or even a year later, the

while watching a violent film. The tiniest negative motion, such as being irritated or anxious, can also serve as a doorway through which the pain- body can return. The pain-body needs your unconsciousness. It cannot tolerate the light of Presence. THE PAIN-BODY AS AN AWAKENER At first sight, it may seem that the pain-body is the greatest obstacle to the arising of a new consciousness in humanity. It occupies your mind, controls and distorts your thinking, disrupts you relationships, and feels like a dark cloud that occupies your entire energy field. It tends to make you unconscious, spiritually speaking, which means totally identified with mind and emotion. It makes you reactive, makes you say and do things that are designed to increase the unhappiness within yourself and the world. As unhappiness increases, however, it also causes increasing disruption in your life. Perhaps the body can't take the stress anymore and
T H E W R I T E R ' S JOURNEY ~ T H I R D EDITION Christopher Vogler DISTORTIONS In other stories the conquest of death may lead to some distortions of perception. Heroes may suffer from an inflation of the ego. In other words, they get a swelled head. T h e y might turn cocky or arrogant. Perhaps they abuse the power and privilege of being a reborn hero. T h e i r self-esteem sometimes grows too large and distorts their perception of their real value. Heroes may be tainted by the very death or evil they came to fight. Soldiers fighting to preserve civilization may fall into the barbarism of war. Cops or detec tives battling criminals often cross the line and use illegal or immoral means, becom ing as bad as the criminals themselves. Heroes can enter the mental world of their opponents and get stuck there, like the detective in Manhunter who risks his soul to
almost unchanged! Another simple technique is the band-shift. This is a kind of telephonic Caesar substitution, in which all the frequencies are shoved upwards or downwards a certain distance, with the portion pushed out of the frequency band reentering at the bottom or the top. For example, a factor of 1,000 might be added to all frequencies in the 300-to-3,300 band, so that a tone of 500 c.p.s. would be *It does not seem possible to devise a scrambler that distorts the sound itself (i.e., the vibrations in the air) because, once the waves were degraded by, say, some kind of baffle, they could not be restored to their original form. Transposition systems, on the other hand, might be possible in a very crude form by means of mechanical phonographs. From a practical point of view, however, nonelectrical scramblers may be ruled out. None ever seems to have been constructed. tJtlNSUKS, S^KAJVLBLtKB, AIN1J shifted to 1,500. One of 2,800 c.p.s
