designer Earl.R.Dean. In 1915, the Coca-Cola Company launched a competition among its bottle suppliers to create a new bottle for their beverage that would distinguish it from other beverage bottles, "a bottle which a person could recognize even if they felt it in the dark, and so shaped that, even if broken, a person could tell at a glance what it was." At first, Dean's prototype never made it to production, because its middle diameter was larger than its base, making it unstable on conveyor belts. Dean resolved this issue by decreasing the bottle's middle diameter. Although the ingredients of Coca-Cola are listed on the side of the bottle or a can, the exact formula of Coca-Cola's natural flavorings is a trade secret. The original copy of the formula was held in SunTrust Bank's main vault in Atlanta for 86 years. Besides natural flavorings, other main ingredients are carbonated water, sugar, caffeine, phosphoric acid and caramel color.

several hundred feet below the surface. Some underground mines are 1,000 feet deep. To remove coal in these underground mines, miners ride elevators down deep mine shafts where they run machines that dig out the coal. Read about a visit to a real underground coal mine. 51 Picture 15.3. Deep mining Processing the Coal. After coal comes out of the ground, it typically goes on a conveyor belt to a preparation plant that is located at the mining site. The plant cleans and processes coal to remove dirt, rock, ash, sulfur, and other unwanted materials, increasing the heating value of the coal. 15.2 Transporting coal After coal is mined and processed, it is ready to be shipped to market. The cost of shipping coal can cost more than the cost of mining it. Most coal is transported by train, but coal can also be transported by barge, ship, truck, and even pipeline

corridor in the country, an honor previously claimed by the 750-foot central corridor of the United States Capitol. In addition to dozens of offices and basement facilities for computers, the structure encloses a cafeteria accommodating 1,400 and an auditorium seating 500, eight snack bars, a post exchange, a dispensary with X-ray and operating rooms and dental chairs, a shoe-repair and clothes-cleaning shop, a barber shop, and a branch of the State Bank of Laurel. A system of "security conveyor belts" runs through the basement, carrying trays of documents to eight substations. A German pneumatic- tube system can whisk up to 800 containers an hour at 75 feet per second to interoffice destinations selected by a dial at each station. The building is fully air- conditioned. It has a public-address system. It is said to have more electric wiring than any building in the world. Its institutional, characterless offices, filled with metal desks, partitions, and lockable file
