Alcoholic cirrhosis is permanent scar tissue, called cirrhosis, forms when the liver cells are damaged by alcohol or drugs. Continued use of alcohol will cause additional scarring and serious health problems. Some people are more culnerable than others to this disease, which occurs in 10% to 15% of prople who consume large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time. CANCER UPPER DIGESTIVE TRACT The strongest link with alcohol involves cancers of the upper digestive tract, including: -esophagus -mouth -pharynx -larynx. An estimated 75% of esophageal cancers in the United States are attributable to chronic, exessive alcohol comsumption. Nearly 50% of cancers of the mounth, pharynx and larynx are associated with heavy drinking. People who drink large amounts of alcohol over time have an increased rick of these cancers, compared with abstainers. If they drink and smoke, the risk is even higher. BREAST CANCER

Cigarettes - Enemies or Friends?

2 billions. There has been so much discussion about the cigarettes bad influence to health. Cigarettes include over 100 ingredients, many of them flavourants for the tobacco. A key ingredient that makes cigarettes more addictive is the inclusion of reconstituted tobacco, which has additives to make nicotine more volatile as the cigarette burns. So it contains these ingredients which are habit-forming and as we all know, it is really hard to abandon. When people think of cancers caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer. Most cases of lung cancer death, close to 90% in men, and 80% in women are caused by cigarette smoking. There are several other forms of cancer attributed to smoking as well. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and has negative health impacts on people at all stages of life. It harms unborn babies, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and also seniors.

diseases. Most of the youths start smoking to improve their self image with no attention of becoming addicted. The awareness of the harmful effects of smoking among young people has been rising but many of the young people ignore the dangers of smoking. One possible solution to reduce smoking is to educate the teens. Schools could have classes and seminars that increase the knowledge about the consequences of smoking. That way teens would be aware of the health problems such as many different cancers, heart diseases, asthma and strokes caused by cigarettes. Youths should also see the visuals how smoking ages skin and yellows teeth. Also a similar meetings for parents and students should be organised. After this parents might be more intrested in and responsible for their child' s health. Teens would care about their health more if they knew about the consequences of tobacco. Raising awareness is a good solution to reduce underage smoking.

The environment in realtion to mobility/transport in Europe

Combined, these two sources are responsible for about 90% of all air pollution in the United States. All kind of pollutions can lead us to serious health problems. For example, air pollution is increasingly being cited as the main cause of lung conditions such as asthma - twice as many people suffer from asthma today compared to 20 years ago. Every year, 3.2m Europeans are diagnosed with cancer - the most common cause of death after heart disease. Most widespread are cancers of the lungs, breast and colon. Diseases such as bronchitis, lung cancer and heart diseases may all eventually appear in people exposed to air pollution. When the wind blows, then it carries the pollution with him. Futhermore, the rain reduces the pollution. Air pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide also have harmful effects on natural ecosystem. A clean air supply is essential to our own health and that of the environment

casualties, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event (the maximum classification) on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011). • The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles (18 billion $USD) . During the accident itself, 31 people died, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for. • The Soviet government also cut down and buried about a square mile of pine forest near the plant to reduce radioactive contamination at and near the site. Chernobyl’s three other reactors were subsequently restarted but all eventually shut down for good, with the last reactor closing in 1999. The Soviet nuclear power authorities presented their initial accident report to an International Atomic

Walking for meetings - analysis of a Nilofer Merchant presentation

Probably her objective was to make people aware of our everyday lives that are lacking of exercises and to give them some solutions with what will accompany thinking outside the box and better life. To be more suitable for people with auditory modality she fed them numerous facts with numbers. For example: “nowadays people are sitting 9,3 hours per day which is more than we sleep at 7,7 hours per day” and lack of physical activity causes 10% of all the cancers. Her whole presentation was very informative and at the same time shocking. Although her use of words was excellent and I do not have anything negative to say about her presentation, I still think she should have had some pictures or maybe a crooked backbone with her on the stage because then people who have visual modality would have understood her better and it also would have emphasized the seriousness of the problem.

of any safety culture. The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later. Acute radiation syndrome was originally diagnosed in 237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up. Of these, 28 people died as a result of it within a few weeks of the accident. Nobody off-site suffered from acute radiation effects although a large proportion of childhood thyroid cancers diagnosed since the accident is likely to be due to intake of radioactive iodine fallout. Furthermore, large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and beyond were affected. The Chernobyl site and plant The Chernobyl Power Complex in Ukraine consisted of four nuclear reactors. Two reactors were under construction at the time of the accident. An artificial lake was constructed to provide cooling water for the reactors. The 1986 Chernobyl accident

There is limited information on the health effects of radon in drinking water in spite of their potential exposures. We conducted an ecological study in a small town in Japan where the groundwater with high concentrations of radon is supplied as utilities. A total of 607 cancer deaths were ascertained by vital statistics in that town from 1972 to 1997. Standardized mortality ratios on the basis of national rates were 1.01 (95% confidence interval; 0.93-1.09) for all cancers, 1.10 (0.95-1.28) for stomach cancer, 0.88 (0.70-1.10) for lung cancer, and 1.14 (0.87-1.48) for liver cancer. Mortality from livercancer was significantly higher than that of two surrounding control cities combined, with a relative risk of 1.40 (1.04-1.89) based on Poisson regression analysis. Lack of information on possible confounders including diet, alcohol drinking, smoking and hepatitis virus infection, is the main limitation

all cases. I will divide the subject into illnesses caused by lifestyle, and illnesses caused by other factors such as genetic factors. First of all, a person's lifestyle can be a major factor in their wellbeing, both physical and mental. People who eat too much fast, fatty, or sugary foods without doing enough physical activity, may put on weight. This has serious effects and can lead to heart disease. Similarly, people who smoke and drink too much run the risk of getting cancers and heart disease. However, by avoiding these things and doing simple things such as walking short distances instead of driving, eating five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day, and taking 20 minutes' exercise three times a week reduces this risk and can prevent disease. As regards genetic factors, the situation is not so clear. Certain genetic factors mean that some people are forced into a lifestyle

1980s led to a concern for cancer effects in occupationally exposed workers. There are now more than 40 epidemiology studies examining the potential for occupational formaldehyde exposure to cause cancer in humans. The studies include cohort mortality studies of formaldehyde-exposed industrial workers, cohort mortality studies of formaldehyde-exposed professionals or medical specialists, and case-control studies that looked for associations between occupational exposure to formaldehyde and cancers of the nose, pharynx, or lung. Although many different ways to calculate relatively risk of human cancer were used all this studies showed similar results. Conclusions of those studies are: National Toxicology Program (1998): formaldehyde is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen International Agency of Research for Cancer (1995): "Taken together, the epidemiological studies suggest a causal relationship between exposure to formaldehyde and nasopharyngeal cancer,

Transposons act somewhat similarly to viruses and in humans are an underlying cause of hemophilia, certain cancers, and other diseases. In other organisms, they can become a permanent and even beneficial part of the genome, as in maize corn, where transposons account for half the genome, and certain bacteria, where genes for antibiotic resistance can spread by means of transposons. Also called jumping gene. · Trasktriptsiooni faktori sidumissait - Sidumissait on ala DNA-l, millele transkriptsioonifaktor seondub
