mainly caused by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide during fossil fuel combustion. When these gases are discharged into the atmosphere they react with the water, oxygen, and other gases already present there to form sulfuric acid, ammonium nitrate, and nitric acid. These acids then disperse over large areas because of wind patterns and fall back to the ground as acid rain or other forms of precipitation. The gases responsible for acid deposition are normally a byproduct of electric power generation and the burning of coal. As such, it began entering the atmosphere in large amounts during the Industrial Revolution and was first discovered by a Scottish chemist, Robert Angus Smith, in 1852. In that year, he discovered the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution in Manchester, England. Although it was discovered in the 1800s, acid deposition did not gain significant public attention until the 1960s and the term acid rain was coined in 1972

scene has strengthened planners’ emphasis on shortrange planning driven by two-year budget cycles and the short-term horizons of the electoral process. This deficiency is unfortunate because academics have the potential to offer practitioners the solid theoretical background that might inform richer, better developed statements about the future. The relative absence of academic attention to the future may stem from several causes. Neglect of the future may also arise as a byproduct of a newly strengthened focus on spatial analysis. Space and time are two essential dimensions for describing the world, but it is difficult to focus on both at once. As opposed to the needed focus on time, recent developments in urban theory have emphasized spatiality, contributing significant new discoveries about the importance of spatial context for regional development. Simultaneously, the rise of a new technical mode of data analysis and display, geographic

The sales method delays recognition of byproducts until the time of sale. Page 585 schedules. Sales method makes no journal entries for byproducts until they are sold. Revenues of byproducts are reported as a revenue item in the income statement at the time of sale. Certain types of resultant hydrocarbons may be mixed with other non-hydrocarbons, to create other end products: Alkenes (olefins) which can be manufactured into plastics or other compounds Lubricants (produces light machine oils, motor oils, and greases, adding viscosity stabilizers as required). Wax, used in the packaging of frozen foods, among others. Sulfur or Sulfuric acid. These are a useful industrial materials. Sulfuric acid is usually prepared as the acid precursor oleum, a byproduct of sulfur removal from fuels. Bulk tar. Asphalt Petroleum coke, used in speciality carbon products or as solid fuel. Paraffin wax Aromatic petrochemicals to be used as precursors in other chemical production. Agriculture Since the 1940s, agricultural productivity has increased dramatically, due largely to the increased use of energy-intensive mechanization, fertilizers and pesticides. Nearly all pesticides and many fertilizers are made from oil. Consumption

How can cooperation/altruism evolve? · If the recipient of the altruistic act benefits, it is going to leave more offsprings · The actor however is n to going to leave more offspring, or even fewer offspring fewer altruists in the next generation. · If such behaviour is heritable, and it goes many generations, it will ultimately die out. 11 Picture 2.9. Sources of used for industry and manufacturing Every industry uses energy, but there are a handful of energy-intensive industries that use the bulk of the energy consumed by the industrial sector. The chemical industry is the largest industrial consumer of energy, followed closely by petroleum refining. The refining, chemical, paper and metal industries together use: · 94% of the feedstock · 92% of the byproduct energy · 70% of total inputs of energy for heat, power, and electricity generation Picture 2.10. Energy use by type of industry 2.6 Transportation Energy Use America is a nation on the move. About 28 percent of the energy we use goes to transporting people and goods from one place to another. Cars, vans, and buses are commonly used to carry people. Trucks, airplanes, and railroads can be used to carry people and freight

If one is a verificationist, philosophy of mind is over and done with. Possibly one or more of the foregoing and to me unappetizing theories are true. Perhaps they are all true. My point here is just that our theory of linguistic meaning should not show in one step that they are. Metaphysics should not be settled by a theory of language, for language is just a late adap- tation found in one primate species. (Perhaps it is not even an adaptation, but a pleiotropism; that is, a mere byproduct of other traits that are themselves adaptive.) Objection 4 How does the Verification Principle apply to itself? Either it is empirically verifiable or it is not. Suppose it is not verifiable. Then either it is just meaningless or it is an empty "analytic" or definitional truth. At least one positivist (I have forgot- ten which) gallantly embraced the idea that the principle is just meaningless, a ladder to be kicked away once one has climbed it. Some positivists took the
