What is addiction?
The term "addiction" is used in many contexts to describe
an obsession, compulsion, or excessive physical depence
or psychological dependence, such as: drug addiction,
video games, crime, alcoholism, compulsive overeating,
problem gambling, computer addiction, pornography, etc.
Drug addiction
Drug addiction is widely
considered a pathological
state. The disorder of
addiction involves the
progression of acute drug
use to the development of
drug-seeking behavior, the
vulnerability to relapse, and
the decreased, slowed
ability to respond to
naturally rewarding stimuli.
Video game addiction
Video game addiction, or
more broadly video game
overuse, is excessive or
compulsive use of computer
and video games that
interferes with daily life.
Instances have been reported
in which users play
compulsively, isolating
themselves from, or from
other forms of, social contact
and focusing almost entirely
on in-game achievements
rather than broader life
events.
Crime addiction
Societies define crime as the
breach of one or more rules
or laws for which some
governing authority or force
may ultimately prescribe a
punishment. People, who are
addicted to do crime are
suffering in crime addiction.
There are different kinds of
that: stealing, killing,
robbing, etc.
Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a term with
multiple and sometimes
conflicting definitions to describe
the detrimental effects of alcohol
intake.
In common and historic usage,
alcoholism refers to any condition
that results in the continued
consumption of alcoholic
beverages despite health problems
and negative social consequences.
Modern medical definitions
describe alcoholism as a disease
and addiction which results in a
persistent use of alcohol despite
negative consequences.
Compulsive overeating
Compulsive overeating, also
sometimes called food addiction
is characterized by an
obsessive/compulsive
relationship to food.
Professionals address this with
either a behaviour-modification
model or a food-addiction
model. An individual suffering
from compulsive overeating
disorder engages in frequent
episodes of uncontrolled eating,
or bingeing, during which they
may feel frenzied or out of
control, often consuming food
past the point of being
comfortably full.
Problem gambling
Problem gambling
(ludomania) is an urge to
gamble despite harmful
negative consequences or a
desire to stop. The term is
preferred to compulsive
gambling among many
professionals, as few people
described by the term
experience true compulsions in
the clinical sense of the word.
Problem gambling often is
defined by whether harm is
experienced by the gambler or
others, rather than by the
gambler's behavior.

Kodutöö: Research (Internet addiction)

Research INTERNET ADDICTION This study set out with the aim of assessing the negative effects of computer addiction in life. The results of this study show that the Internet may become a problem when it absorbs too much of your time, causing you to neglect your relations, your work, school, or other important things in your life. Surprisingly, computer addiction covers a variety of impulse-control problems including cybersex addiction, cyber-relationship addiction, net compulsions, information overload and Internet addiction. These findings supports the importance of the Internet addiction. Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. This suggests that it's important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include

Drugs and how they affect your health.

This could be a parent, other relative, teacher, coach, or school counselor. The person might need professional help to stop using drugs. A grown-up can help the person find the treatment he or she needs to stop using drugs. Another way kids can help kids is by choosing not to try or use drugs. It's a good way for friends to stick together. Understanding drugs and why they are dangerous is another good step for a kid to take. Below, we've listed some words that may be new to you. Addiction - A person has an addiction when he or she becomes dependent on or craves a drug all of the time. Depressant - A depressant is a drug that slows a person down. Doctors prescribe to help people be less angry, anxious, or tense. Depressants relax muscles and make people feel sleepy, less stressed out, or like their head is stuffed. Some people may use these drugs illegally to slow themselves down and help bring on sleep - especially after using various kinds of stimulants

Homeless

When a woman leaves an abusive relationship, she often has nowhere to go. This is particularly true of women with few resources . Lack of affordable housing and long waiting lists for assisted housing mean that many women and their children are forced to choose between abuse ( ) at home or the streets. Whether a person is young or old, a permanently homeless state is the result of a chain of unfortunate events, but often it `s the result of an addiction to alcohol or drugs. Such addictions may well have developed since they began to lead a tramp ` s existence .

Social Problems

Social Problems Crime In the sociological field, crime is the breach of a rule or law for which some governing authority or force may ultimately prescribe a punishment. The word crime originates from the Latin crimen. When society deems informal relationships and sanctions insufficient to create and maintain a desired social order, there may result more formalized systems of social control imposed by a government, or more broadly, by a State. With the institutional and legal machinery at their disposal, agents of the State can compel individuals to conform to behavioural codes and punish those that do not. Various mechanisms are employed to regulate behaviour, including rules codified into laws, policing people to ensure they comply with those laws, and other policies and practices designed to prevent crime. In addition are remedies and sanctions, and collectively these constitute a criminal justice system. Not all breaches of the law, h

Short and long term effects of alcohol

Short and long term effects of alcohol Good morning. My name is NIMI. I'm going to talk about short and long term effects of alcohol consumption. Firstly I'll tell you about short term effects and then move on to long term effects. My presentation will take about 5 minutes. If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask them afterwards. Firstly I would focus on the short term effects of alcohol consumption. The amount and circumstances of alcohol consumption play a large part in determining the extent of intoxication; for instance, consuming alcohol after a heavy meal causes alcohol to absorb more slowly. Hydration also plays a role as for determining the extent of hangovers. Initially, alcohol produces feelings of relaxation and cheerfulness, but as a result of further consumption blurred vision and coordination problems generally occure. As far as cell membranes are concerned they are highly permeable to alcohol, once alcohol is in the bloodstream it can diffuse into nearly ever
