seeds or collect the plant food. However, the Aborigines were very clever in making things out of noting, like fishing lines for example. They were made out of hair and strings. Bones were used as weapons and as needles. The "Dreamtime", the mythological past, is very important to the Aborigines. They believe that it was the time, when spirit ancestors had traveled throughout the land, giving it its physical form, and setting down the ruled to be followed by the Aboriginals. There are also many different stories or legends about powerful beings like the "Fertility Mother", the "Great Rainbow Snake". The story about Pemulwuy is also famous. As there were shortages of food and water, the Aborigines blamed supernatural forces for those and all the other problems. Magic and rituals were used to correct the situation. A man called either the "medicine man" or the "doctor", who was a powerful man, cured physical ills that occurred quite often.

There where no cultivated crops, animals were not herded for food and metalworking was yet to be discovered. At that time, known as the last great Ice Age, Australia was joined to New Guinea. Islands such as Java and Borneo were larger than today, sea passages between them narrower. This made it possible for the ancestors of the people now called Australian Aboriginals to reach Australia from lands to the north. In the High Court of Australia, Australian Aborigines have been specifically identified as a group of people who share, in common, biological ancestry back to the original occupants of the continent. History The first people of Australia were nomadic people who came to Australia from south-east Asia. Scientists don't know exactly when they arrived but it is somewhere between 40000 and 60000 years ago. When British came to Australia in 1788, they called these native people “aboriginals”, meaning people who had lived there since the earliest times. Captain James Cook set the colonization of Australia into motion by exploring and mapping the fertile eastern coast of Australia, but he was not the first to visit Australia. There is evidence suggesting Aborigines in northern Australia maintained trade with some of the Indonesian islands closest to the coast. Chinese and Arab's may have had contact with the Aborigines in the 15th century.
