Black Beauty

Chapters 6 – 8: The stable boy, James, got a better job with a nearby farmer so he was trained by the head groom. One day, when he drove the carriage led by Black Beauty, they nearly had an accident. Thanks to the clever horse, they avoided a broken bridge and got home later but safe. On another occasion, on a trip to Oxford they stopped for the night. A careless man smoked in the stables and caused a big fire. Black Beauty and Ginger were rescued by James but both he and Ginger were unwell after that and had to rest. Chapters 9 –11: Black Beauty saved Mrs Gordon’s life when he ran very fast to bring the doctor to her. He then became ill himself because a new groom didn’t look after him properly when he got back. The Gordons moved abroad and Black Beauty and Ginger were sold to Lord Westland at Earl’s Hall. They had a good groom, but Lady Westland was unkind and made the horses wear bearing reins so that they held their heads up high, which was fashionable in London.

3. Introduce the setting (time and place) of the chapter. Spring, Williston, North Dakota. 4. Analyse the shifting points of view and modes of narration in the subchapters. Through whose eyes is the action presented to the reader? First it was a 3-rd person narrator (author) and the second subchapter is presented through Albertine Johnson eyes (1 st person narration). 5. What details suggest that June Kashpaw is poor, hungry, and unwell? What can you say about the life that she has been leading? Why does she hope that the man in the bar `could be different' (3)? She was killing time before bus arrival - she had no car, she accepted invitation of a man without a hesitation thinking that she may tip down one or two with him; her boots were thin, when she was eating the egg she realized how hungry she was, she didnt know what she'd eaten last, she spent her last money on the ticket, the money

"Othello"

When Cassio is about to leave, Othello and Iago return. Cassio leaves without talking to Othello, after what he becomes upset and moody and Iago furthers his goal of removing Cassio and Othello by suggesting that Cassio and Desdemona are involved in an affair. Desdemona's entreaties to Othello to reinstate Cassio as lieutenant add to Othello's almost immediate conviction that his wife is unfaithful. Desdemona finds him feeling unwell and offers him her handkerchief to wrap around his head, but it is too little and he lets it drop to the floor. Later, Emilia picks up the handkerchief and gives it to Iago. He plants it in Cassio's room as an evidence of their affair. Iago tells Othello of the meeting he has planned with Cassio and instructs him to hide nearby and watch as Iago extracts from Cassio the story of his affair with Desdemona. While

It was difficult. 6. Adjectives and adjective phrases Adjectives are words in English that describe the noun. They can take different positions in sentences. 6.1 Four properties of adjectives  Attributive adjectives – An adjective is attributive when it comes before a noun. For example: An ugly painting, an old man  Predicative adjectives – An adjective is predicative when it comes after a noun. For example: He looks unwell. I am afraid.  Postpositive adjectives – Adjectives that come immediately after a noun. For example: Something useful, everyone present, those responsible  Modification and inflection – Adjectives can take modifying words before them such as very, less, extremely etc. Adjectives have three different forms which indicate the degree of the adjective. The three forms are positive, comparative, superlative

Loudness depends on many factors. Diminished loudness expresses intimacy, shyness, mildness but also threat and warning. A loud voice shows familiarity, a fear to be misunderstood, etc. Stress: · Logical stress--singles out words that are primary in the given context (I didn't mean you, I meant everybody) · Emphatic Stress--stress that singles out words as emotionally important or points out their hidden or specific meaning. (I told you, he is unwell--meaning drunk or high). Emphatic stress is suggested graphically by the Italics, exclamation marks, dots and dashes. · Accompanying means of emphasis can be the prolongation of vowels. Vowels are prolonged to express positive emotions (glad). Consonants are prolonged to express negative feelings (lousy, monotonous) Pauses: · Logical pauses divide the utterance into meaningful parts--sense groups--and are marked by punctuation

musical comedy `a comedy accompanied by music' a tidal wave `a wave produced by the tide' Predicative only: Adjectives that are restricted, or virtually restricted, to predicative positions are most like verbs and adverbs. They tend to refer to a (possibly temporary) condition rather than to characterize. Perhaps the most common are those referring to health (or lack of health) of an animate being: He felt ill/poorly (BrE) /well/faint/unwell However, many people use such adjectives as attributives too, for example: A well person need see a doctor only for a periodic checkup. A large group of adjectives that are restricted to predicative position comprises adjectives with can take complementation: able (to + infinite) fond (of) afraid (that, of about) glad (that, to) answerable (to) happy (that, to with, about) adverse (to, from) loath (to) aware (of) subject (to)

character expressed by two incompatible adjectives (case of oxymoron). Such pauses may be marked in a text and may be introduced by a speaker. STRESS: We can speak about logical stress it singles out words that are primary in the context (e.g. "I didn't mean you, I mean everybody."). Stress that is used to single out words that are emotionally important or to point out their hidden or specific meaning is called emphatic (e.g. "I told you he is unwell."). Emphatic stress may be signaled graphically by the Italics, dots, exclamation marks, etc. Accompany means of emphasis may be prolongation of vowels and consonants. Vowels are usually prolonged to express positive feelings (e.g. "I am so glaaaaaad."). Consonants become longer to express negative emotions (e.g. "Mmmmmonstrous idea"). Jane Austen

The rain continued the whole evening without intermission; Jane certainly could not come back. "This was a lucky idea of mine, indeed!" said Mrs. Bennet more than once, as if the credit of making it rain were all her own. Till the next morning, however, she was not aware of all the felicity of her contrivance. Breakfast was scarcely over when a servant from Netherfield brought the following note for Elizabeth: "MY DEAREST LIZZY,-- "I find myself very unwell this morning, which, I suppose, is to be imputed to my getting wet through yesterday. My kind friends will not hear of my returning till I am better. They insist also on my seeing Mr. Jones--therefore do not be alarmed if you should hear of his having been to me--and, excepting a sore throat and headache, there is not much the matter with me.--Yours, etc." "Well, my dear," said Mr. Bennet, when Elizabeth had read the note aloud, "if your
