million. It is also a multicultural city,
as it has been since Roman times.
Now about a quarter of the capital`s
inhabitants are members of ethnic
minotities.
The Irish community

People from Ireland first went to London in

Indian communities
Indians are London`s largest ethnic minority.

Thousands arrived from Uganda and Kenya in

They come from islands.
Caribbeans first arrived in large numbers after

Racism and riots
In 1958 there were riots against Caribbeans in
Notting Hill.
In the 1970s skinheads attacked Bangladeshis
in Brick Lane.
Many black people rioted against in the 1980s.
Religious refugees
East End was a refuge for two groups.
Huguenots from France arrived in the 17th
century.
In the late 19th century Jews fleeing pogroms
in Russia and Central Europe came to London.
Many Jews live in North London.
Ultra-orthodox group.
A young population
1980s- London`s population has been rising
since.
Asylum-seekers from abroad have contributed
to this increase.
Young people attracted by jobs or universities.
London`s population is younger than the UK`s
as a whole.

Henry II, with permission from tha Pope, sought to conquer Ireland. In 1171 he became the first English monarch to set foot on the isle. 4. Who were settled in the province of Ulster by King James I? James I settled English and Scottish Protestants in Munster and Ulster. What has this resulted in? It has resulted in an amount of English people in Ireland. 5. What is meant by Home Rule? Home Rule was a movement that sought to repeal the Acts of Union 1800. The Home Rule Act, was meant to permit Ireland self-government within the UK. 6. Changes in the number of population since the 1840s. 1841: 6.5M in Ireland, 8.2M on the island 1901: 3.2M in Ireland, 5M on the island 1951: 3.0M in Ireland, 4.4M on the island 2011: 4.6M in Ireland, 6.4M on the island Causes of emigration from Ireland.
