Queen Victoria and Victorian England

She toured English possessions and even visited France (the first English monarch to do so since the coronation of Henry VI in 1431). With time, the private urgings of her family and the flattering attention of Benjamin Disraeli, Prime Minister in 1868 and from 1874 to 1880, the Queen gradually resumed her public duties. Despite her advanced age, Victoria continued her duties to the end - including an official visit to Dublin in 1900. The Boer War in South Africa overshadowed the end of her reign. As in the Crimean War nearly half a century earlier, Victoria reviewed her troops and visited hospitals; she remained undaunted by British reverses during the campaign: 'We are not interested in the possibilities of defeat; they do not exist.' Queen Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch and the figurehead of a vast empire. She oversaw vast

adapt ... or face disempowerment'. In the immediate aftermath of the Cold War, as the UNSC became more active, questions regarding its legitimacy tended to focus upon its failure adequately to represent a UN membership which had almost quadrupled since the organization's founding (Fassbender, 1998; Morris, 2000). However, as disagreements between the P-5 emerged over the Kosovo crisis in 19981999, and even more significantly in relation to Iraq in 2003, this debate was overshadowed by one regarding the criteria to be applied in determining the acceptable bounds within which states may have recourse to the use of force. It is an exploration of these issues, and the fundamental bearing that they have on the UNSC's legitimacy, that forms the principal focus of this article. The first of these harbours concerns regarding the legitimacy of the UNSC, which it sees as being undermined by the Council's apparent

.[82][83] Burger King was a pioneer in the advertising practice known as the product tie-in with a successful partnering with George Lucas' Lucasfilm, Ltd. to promote the 1977 movie Star Wars film Star Wars (later renamed Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) in which BK sold a set of glasses featuring the main characters from the film. This promotion was one of the first in the fast food industry and set the pattern that continues to the present. BK's early success in the field was overshadowed by a 1982 deal between McDonald's and the Walt Disney Company to promote Disney's animated films beginning in the mid 1980s and running through the early 1990s. In 1994 Disney switched from McDonald's to Burger King, signing a ten film promotional contract which would include such top ten films as Aladdin (1992), Beauty and the Beast (1991), The Lion King (1994) and Toy Story (1995). A partnership in association with the Pokémon franchise at the height of its popularity in 1999 was one of the

the second from 1664 to 1667. As a result of the latter conflict the Dutch lost New Amsterdam in North America but acquired Dutch Guiana (now Suriname). Other wars, costly in lives and money, followed against England and France. (3) After the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), in which the Dutch were allies of the British against the French, the economic and political power of the Netherlands began to decline. Eventually the Dutch Republic was overshadowed by the expanding power of Great Britain on the sea and France on the land. In 1747 his son became stadtholder in all seven provinces as William IV. We find them at the school of Chartres in the mid12th century, or at the medical school at Salerno near Naples in 1060. At Toledo in Spain, 92 Arabic works had been translated along with Ptolemy in 1175. By the 12th century, Arabic science and mathematics had found its way to Oxford in England and to Padua in Italy. From the early 12th century, then, there existed in Europe a continuous tradition of scientific endeavor. And although this science was temporarily overshadowed by the intellectual bulk of Aristotle in the mid13th century, this tradition was living in the 15th and 16th centuries and well into the 17th. This was the background and education of the scientific revolutionaries. We must see their discoveries as shaped and formed by this core of accepted ideas and not just spinning out of empty space. The revolution in science did not occur quickly. It developed over time. Although the medieval Church earned absolute power,

these school children remained absent in media discourse as they challenged the very essence of the idea of western childhood in which the `political child` is seen as “un-child” that provokes the held expectations of children that are socially constructed and determined mainly by political priorities.63 Chapter 2: Citizenship Education in Wales However, in the midst of this paradox where the recognition of children as active participants of society is clearly overshadowed by the dominating notions of children as objects of social concern/control, it is nevertheless important to recognise that the gradual shift towards the enactment of rights agenda in policy formation in the UK should not be underestimated.64 The major cultural change in the re-evaluation of our traditional understanding of childhood does not happen overnight. The Welsh Assembly Government for instance is the leading nation in the UK which regards children`s rights on the basis of all of

authored two works on cryptology. After explaining that one may write in an unknown language to obtain secrecy, Ibn ad-Duraihim, according to Qalqashandi, gave seven systems of ciphers. This list encompassed, for the first time in cryptography, both transposition and substitution ciphers. Moreover, one system is the first known cipher ever to provide more than one substitute for a plaintext letter. Remarkable and important as this is, however, it is overshadowed by what follows— the first exposition on cryptanalysis in history. It appeared in full maturity in Qalqashandi's paraphrase of Ibn ad- Duraihim, but its beginnings are probably to be found in the intense and minute scrutiny of the Koran by whole schools of grammarians in Basra, Kufa, and Baghdad to elucidate its meanings. Among other studies, they counted the frequency of words to attempt a chronology for the chapters
