Kafka's Hunger Artist

Kafka's Hunger Artist Kafka, in his masterpiece "The Hunger Artist," suggests that humans can never satisfy their desires. This is illustrated through the metaphorical hunger artist for whom nourishment is not being nourished at all. The viewing public's interest is derived from their desire to see the hunger artist cheating, but to view this would put an end to that desire. Finally, Kafka presents this idea while the artist is at the circus and describing when people wish to view the starved man. The hunger artist's nourishment is spiritual. The man only wishes to be honored by the public. As he continuously spirals downward in his health, he looses all forms of material nourishment

bastard children. Alas! Too frequent among us, sacrificing the poor innocent babies" as well (54). Children are not representing anything, but a hot commodity there. Especially my attention was struck by the fact that the author incorporates a settlement system, when he calculates the costs for rearing and profit from the sale of poor women' babies. According to Swift, "a child just dropped from its dam may be supported by her milk for a solar year, with the little other nourishment: at most not above the value of two shillings" and he also believes that a healthy and delicious infant may easily be sold for 10 shillings, which means that "the mother will have 8s. net profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child" (53,55). The most seemingly blessed event delivery of a child - compared to the way of doing business. Swift emphasizes this by employing several phrases such as "breeder" and

The Medium Is the Message

In the seventeenth century our ancestors still shared this native's attitude to the forms of media, as is plain in the following sentiment of the Frenchman Bernard Lam expressed in The Art o f Speaking (London, 1696): 'Tis an effect of the Wisdom of God, who created Man to be happy, that whatever is useful to his conversation (way of life) is agreeable to him . . . because all victual that conduces to nourishment is relishable, whereas other things that cannot be assimulated and be turned into our substance are insipid. A Discourse cannot be pleasant to the Hearer that is not easie to the Speaker; nor can it be easily pronounced unless it be heard with delight. Here is an equilibrium theory of human diet and expression such as even now we are only striving to work out again for media after centuries of fragmentation and specialism.

and nature has given to children, and obliged parents to as a duty, it would be reasonable, that the father should inherit the estate of his son, and be preferred in the inheritance before his grand-child: for to the grand-father there is due a long score of care and expences laid out upon the breeding and education of his son, which one would think in justice ought to be paid. But that having been done in obedience to the same law, whereby he received nourishment and education from his own parents; this score of education, received from a man's father, is paid by taking care, and providing for his own children; is paid, I say, as much as is required of payment by alteration of property, unless present necessity of the parents require a return of goods for their necessary support and subsistence: for we are not now speaking of that reverence,

old-fashioned and so on, have become unclear and even lost their synonymous content. Everything seems relative. However, on an absolute spiritual level, which we have yet to reach, all contradictions will, in the end, find their solution. This is the true path and there stand the genuine answers. In other words, when trying to evaluate music you have to shift attention from your Head to your spiritual Heart. Genuine art production must be the source for spiritual nourishment. Real advancement as I comprehend it stands in mounting higher, nearer to divinity, not vice versa. The orchestral creation may be considered a powerful means for spiritual growth. Modern Estonian symphonism exhibits diverse, uneven, splintered tendencies. Several young composers have shifted their attention to timbres and “pure” sound. The major, painful problem is the shortage of vigorous, impressive and profound core ideas.
