The word hippie originates from the 1920s and comes from the word hip – someone, who is into the coolest and newest things; hip, hipster and hippie were used almost synonymously Although the hippie movement is strongly associated with music, it is not directly related to a particular music genre. The music hippies listened to ranges from rock music, folk and blues to psychedelic rock and new age. The hippies are often viewed together with the sexual revolution, which refers to a period, when sex began to be regarded more casually and what’s more important – talked about – and the idea of free love meant that sexual relations were more loose is only half of the story;
The Role of the Hippie Movement in 21st Century Britain The hippies’ primary belief was that life was about being happy, not about what others thought you should be. Their “if it feels good, do it” attitudes included little forethought nor concern for the consequences of their actions. Hippies were dissatisfied with what their parents had built for them. Hippies rejected middle class values, opposed nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War. They embraced aspects of eastern philosophy and desired to find new meaning in life. Hippies were often vegetarian and believed in eco friendly environmental practices. They championed free love and sexual liberation, particularly for women. They also promoted the use of psychedelic drugs which they believed expanded their consciousness.

During the last 30 years there were a lot of different trends in youth movements. All of them were characterized by their own philosophy, way of life, style of dressing. Each tendency was born by the influence of economic and political changes in the society. Those trends are known as the "hippies" the "punks" the "rockers". But certainly there are different traditional youth organizations in Great Britain. Among them -- the Scout Association, the Girl Guides Association, the National Union of Students, the Youth Club.
