Essay: What Makes a Good Teacher

What Makes a Good Teacher As everybody knows, being a teacher requires different qualities that many people do not have. It is commonly accepted that teaching is often extremely difficult and stressful because pupils can sometimes give the tutor a hard time. Only the tough ones survive. I reckon it all comes down to the circumstance whether the teacher loves her job or does she do it just for the salary. If she only does it for money, the children will not take her seriously. She should also have a vast knowledge of her subject. Otherwise, it is really difficult for the attentive and eager pupils to get answers to their questions.Another important quality is humour. I believe that helps to make picking up knowledge much easier and more fun. Children always prefer teachers with a good sense of humour

Customs and behaviour patterns in Finland

Refrain from eating before your host begins, and take small portions because it is the custom to eat everything on one's plate. At a dinner party, it is customary to refrain from drinking until the host offers a toast, and to refrain from eating until the host begins. Standing with arms folded is sometimes viewed as a sign of arrogance. Always cover the mouth when yawning! Finnish Behaviour Finns believe there is a proper way to act in any circumstance and always expect courteous behaviour. Talk in moderate tones and do not do anything to call attention to yourself. Serial conversation is the rule - i.e. listen to the speaker, wait for them to finish and then reply. Interrupting is rude. Finnish Meeting Etiquette Greetings are formal, with a firm handshake, direct eye contact, and a smile. It is common practice to repeat your first and surname while shaking hands.

the highest on a tightrope, Swift is poking fun at the way officials are chosen in England. He is also commenting on the disturbing trend of politicians who are willing to do whatever it takes to gain favour in the courtincluding humiliating themselves. The danger of ambition is also figured here; jumping badly can lead to death. Having Gulliver stand with his legs apart so that the Lilliputian armies can walk through is also a ridiculous idea. It is a comment on the pomp and circumstance of English armies. To Swift it seems that armies are often more concerned with looking impressive than with being impressive. This scene might also be an allusion to the Colossus of Rhodes, described in Julius Caesar by Shakespeare as a largerthanlife figure that men could walk through the legs of. The war between the English and the French is parodied in the conflict between the Lilliputians and the Blefuscudians

Have of your audience been most free and bounteous: If it be so, as so 'tis put on me, And that in way of caution, I must tell you, You do not understand yourself so clearly As it behoves my daughter and your honour. What is between you? give me up the truth. OPHELIA He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders Of his affection to me. LORD POLONIUS 30 Affection! pooh! you speak like a green girl, Unsifted in such perilous circumstance. Do you believe his tenders, as you call them? OPHELIA I do not know, my lord, what I should think. LORD POLONIUS Marry, I'll teach you: think yourself a baby; That you have ta'en these tenders for true pay, Which are not sterling. Tender yourself more dearly; Or—not to crack the wind of the poor phrase, Running it thus—you'll tender me a fool. OPHELIA My lord, he hath importuned me with love In honourable fashion. LORD POLONIUS Ay, fashion you may call it; go to, go to. OPHELIA

agreeable when they chose it, but proud and conceited. They were rather handsome, had been educated in one of the first private seminaries in town, had a fortune of twenty thousand pounds, were in the habit of spending more than they ought, and of associating with people of rank, and were therefore in every respect entitled to think well of themselves, and meanly of others. They were of a respectable family in the north of England; a circumstance more deeply impressed on their memories than that their brother's fortune and their own had been acquired by trade. Mr. Bingley inherited property to the amount of nearly a hundred thousand pounds from his father, who had intended to purchase an estate, but did not live to do it. Mr. Bingley intended it likewise, and sometimes made choice of his county; but as he was now provided with a good house and the liberty of a manor, it was doubtful to many of those who best

the enemy for life and honour. So with the Celtiberians and the Cimbrians we fought as with deadly enemies, not to determine which should be supreme, but which should survive; but with the Latins, Sabines, Samnites, Carthaginians, and Pyrrhus we fought for supremacy. The Carthaginians violated treaties; Hannibal was cruel; the others were more merciful. From Pyrrhus we have this famous speech on the exchange of prisoners... Again, if under stress of circumstance individuals have made any promise to the enemy, they are bound to keep their word even then. For instance, in the First Punic War, when Regulus was taken prisoner by the Carthaginians, he was sent to Rome on parole to negotiate an exchange of prisoners; he came and, in the first place, it was he that made the motion in the Sen ate that the prisoners should not be restored; and in the second place, when his relatives and friends would have kept him back, he chose to

For this reason alone, then, we may be willing to agree to perform a larger favor than the one we received, merely to relieve ourselves of the psychological burden of debt. There is another reason as well. A person who violates the reciprocity rule by accepting without attempting to return the good acts of others is disliked by the so- cial group. The exception, of course, occurs when a person is prevented from re- payment by reasons of circumstance or ability. For the most part, however, there is a genuine distaste for an individual who fails to conform to the dictates of the re- ciprocity rule (Wedekind 8{ Milinski, 2000).2 Moocher and ingrate are unsavory labels to be scrupulously shunned. So undesirable are they that people will some- times agree to an unequal exchange in order to dodge them. In combination, the reality of internal discomfort and the possibility of exter-

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

It is silly to continue to be unhappy about things they did or didn’t do that they were incapable of doing otherwise. Let it go and get on with your life. ■ DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY The second major cause of negative emotions according to Ouspen- sky, is identification, or attachment. This occurs when you take something personally or you become attached to a person or thing. You see the unhappy outcome of an event or circumstance as a per- sonal affront or attack on you or on something you believe in or hold dearly. You become emotionally involved in a situation and identify so strongly with it that it affects your emotions and your reason in a negative way. The great spiritual teachers, such as Buddha and Jesus, have emphasized the importance of separating yourself emotionally from the situation (disidentification), in order to regain your calmness and

Kuulsus saabus 1920. aastal, kui tema orkestri plaadistatud Schonbergeri “Whispering’i” müüdi 1,8 miljonit plaati; 1920. aastast New Yorgis. Tema ideeks oli algusest peale luua “sümfooniline džäss” (McCarty 1971: 20). 163 Paul Whitemani tuntud New Yorgi kontserdi (12.02.1924) kavast, kus tuli esmaettekandele ka G. Gershwini “Rhapsody in Blue”, ei mahtunud džässi mõiste alla ei E. Elgari “Pomp and circumstance” ega süit V. Herberti serenaadidest (Schwinger 1972: 55). 164 Meenutagem, et sama RMÜ oli alles mõne aasta eest nõudnud valitsuselt džässi ärakeelamist (Bruér 1998: 67). 165 Selle väite tõestamiseks tuleb teha selget vahet nn klubikontserdi ja akadeemilises mõistes kontserdi vahel. Esimesel puhul on õhustik hoopis vabam, restoranlikum. Tavaliselt istutakse kõigis džässiklubides laudade

the positivists' notion of a sentence's verification condition with that of the sentence's truth condition. On this view, to know a sentence's meaning is to know the conditions under which that sentence would be true, rather than to know how to tell whether the sentence is actually true. (Never mind episte- mology.) For two sentences to be synonymous is for them to be true under just the same conditions; for a sentence to be ambiguous is for it to be both true and false in the same circumstance yet without self-contradiction; for one sentence to entail another is for it to be impossible that the first be true without the second being true also. We are already familiar with the truth-conditional approach to meaning, though not by name, from our discussion of Russell's Theory of Descriptions: Russell proceeds precisely by sketching the truth conditions of sentences containing descriptions and arguing on various grounds that they are the correct truth conditions
