He satired of British aristocratic snobbery Dickens is famed for many things--his depiction of the hardships of the working class, his intricate plots, his sense of humour. But he is perhaps most famed for the characters he created. His novels were heralded early in his career for their ability to capture the everyday man on paper and thus create a memorable character to whom readers could relate, and envision as a real person. BLEAK HOUSE (1853) belongs to Dickens's greatest works of social criticism. The novel is built around a lawsuit, the classic case of Jarndyce, which affects all who come into contact with it. Another novel of Charles Dickens is Oliver Twist, written in 1837-39. Oliver Twist is the first novel in the English language to centre throughout on a child protagoni and is also notable for Dickens's unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives.

Hemingway A Farewell to Arms (main characters)

Even after he has been severely wounded, he discourages Rinaldi from pursuing medals of distinction for him. Time and again, through conversations with men like the priest, Ettore Moretti, and Gino, Henry distances himself from such abstract notions as faith, honor, and patriotism. Concepts such as these mean nothing to him beside such concrete facts of war as the names of the cities in which he has fought and the numbers of decimated streets. Against this bleak backdrop, Henry's reaction to Catherine Barkley is rather astonishing. The reader understands why Henry responds to the game that Catherine proposes--why he pledges his love to a woman he barely knows: like Rinaldi, he hopes for a night's simple pleasures. But an active sex drive does not explain why Henry returns to Catherine--why he continues to swear his love even after Catherine insists that he stop playing. In his fondness for Catherine, Henry reveals a vulnerability usually hidden by

The atmosphere is severely dry nine months of the year, and average annual snowfall is only 18 inches, due to the rain shadow effect whereby mountain ranges prevent moisture from the ocean from reaching the plateaus. Western passes receive small amounts of fresh snow each year but remain traversable all year round. Low temperatures are prevalent throughout these western regions, where bleak desolation is unrelieved by any vegetation beyond the size of low bushes, and where wind sweeps unchecked across vast expanses of arid plain. The Indian monsoon exerts some influence on eastern Tibet. Northern Tibet is subject to high temperatures in the summer and intense cold in the winter. Cultural Tibet consists of several regions. These include Amdo (A mdo) in the northeast, which is under the administration as part of the provinces of Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan.

Trail of Broken Treaties of 1972 The Trail of Broken Treaties Caravan is primarily known as an American Indian Movement (AIM) protest that occurred in 1972. Events such as this were designed to bring attention to the mistreatment and bleak future the First Nations found themselves facing as a result of the colonization process and its after effects. The Trail of Broken Treaties was designed to generate media coverage, providing a useful medium to articulate the goals and changes they wanted to see occur in federal Indian policy. The activists, and in particular the American Indian Movement, used the mass media in an attempt to sway depictions

His tone made me look up -- I had finally broken through his carefully composed mask. His face was incredulous, with just a hint of the anger I'd feared. "No," I said softly. "It doesn't matter to me what you are." A hard, mocking edge entered his voice. "You don't care if I'm a monster? If I'm not human!" "No." He was silent, staring straight ahead again. His face was bleak and cold. "You're angry," I sighed. "I shouldn't have said anything." "No," he said, but his tone was as hard as his face. "I'd rather know what you're thinking -- even if what you're thinking is insane." "So I'm wrong again?" I challenged. "That's not what I was referring to. 'It doesn't matter'!" he quoted, gritting his teeth together. "I'm right?" I gasped. "Does it matter?" I took a deep breath. "Not really." I paused. "But I am curious." My voice, at least, was composed.

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The second monothematic movement is a quiet, wistful unison-monologue for bassoon and violoncellos. The composer’s free meditation, sounds like a compound of different interwoven, increasingly strenuous, motifs. The former loneliness and sadness has been replaced by inner tranquillity: Example 21. The Finale is based on a theme, an ancient melancholic Estonian tune, with variations: Example 22. The composer is attempting to rid himself of bleak thoughts. The sixth variation (the last) is transferred into the major key; so the joyous folk tune Once when I was still young entry is sustained in a dance-like form. A brilliant final chord has been reached. The theme of the whole work is not homogeneous in style but rich in thought and feeling. The classical harmony applied draws in sequential repetitions, long organ points, pedals, and diminished seventh chords to emphasise the dramatic moment. Kapp
