told stories that had happened during his travels. At the same time, Shel was afraid of the wind change because it meant he had to choose between the woman he loved and his duty as a seaman. When Orlando said that she loved Shel, they discovered something at the same time. He comprehended that Orlando was a man and Orlando realized that Shel was a woman. He could not believe that Orlando was a woman because she was ,,as tolerant and free-spoken as a man" and Orlando was astonished because Shel was ,,as strange and subtle as a woman". Surprisingly their relationship did not get weird after that, on the contrary they got along even better and understood each other perfectly. In Shel, Orlando found someone like her, an individual not defined by his gender. He combines qualities of both genders, and is thus compatible with Orlando. Orlando thought that Shel's name suited him because "there was something romantic and

to. When Jacob returns he says that he caught the scent. As Bella washes the dishes, Jacob begins to ask her questions about her and Edward's relationship, centering on how she feels about him being a vampire and when she is planning on being changed. The anger and sadness of her answer, and the fact that it will be so soon after graduation, causes Jacob to clench down on a knife in his hand and cut himself badly. Bella witnesses his ability to heal quickly and it leaves her astonished. Jacob invites Bella to the reservation for a bonfire party, and Bella tells him she would ask if it was ok. With that Jacob leaves and Edward returns from where he was waiting just outside the house. Edward asks about the bloody knife Bella accidentally left on the counter after her bleach- filled cleaning frenzy from when Jacob cut himself, and she tells him what happened. Edward takes out a large envelope that he retrieved from her mail and hands it to her. Bella's

sounding word in another language. Also, languages that borrow heavily from a single foreign language are likely to create their own words that look like loanwords but are in fact not part of the source language (e.g. double-entendre appears French to English speakers but does not exist in French; a number of Western European languages use the apparently English word beamer to refer to a computer data projector, and speakers of those languages are astonished when visiting native speakers of English don't know the word). Finally, doublets are pairs of different words in a given language that can both be traced back to the same source but which have come into the language by different routes. English wine and vine both ultimately go back to Latin vinum, but the first was borrowed into early Germanic at the peak of the Roman Empire (i.e. before Germanic speakers moved to Britain),

When they entered, Fagin, Dodger, and Charlie Bates were there. They were happy to see Oliver and astonished at his clothing. Once they figured out he had five pounds on him and valuable books under his arms, Fagin and Mr. Sikes began fighting over who got to keep the books and the money. Bennet coolly observed: "From all that I can collect by your manner of talking, you must be two of the silliest girls in the country. I have suspected it some time, but I am now convinced." Catherine was disconcerted, and made no answer; but Lydia, with perfect indifference, continued to express her admiration of Captain Carter, and her hope of seeing him in the course of the day, as he was going the next morning to London. "I am astonished, my dear," said Mrs. Bennet, "that you should be so ready to think your own children silly. If I wished to think slightingly of anybody's children, it should not be of my own, however." "If my children are silly, I must hope to be always sensible of it." "Yes--but as it happens, they are all of them very clever." "This is the only point, I flatter myself, on which we do not agree. I had hoped that our

People start constructing stories and might change them in order to understand and make sense of the situation that personally fits their ideas and values. Neisser and Harsch asked college students about a shocking public event, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. Interviewed again 3 years later, about half of the participants remembered some details correctly but recalled other details inaccurately. ¼ of the students completely misremembered all the major details and were astonished of how inaccurate their memories were comparing to the original descriptions. Neisser has suggested that the memories are so vivid because the event itself is rehearsed and reconstructed after the event. A flashbulb memory may simply be a narrative convention. In addition, current attitudes and emotions may influence or distort people's memories. Emotion starts with a process of cognitive appraisal to assess whether the situation is relevant for survival, well-being, goals or values.

Cross stood and buttoned his jacket. "You have a direction, Mr. Garrity. We'll revisit next week." I sat for a moment, stunned by the breakneck pace of events. Then I looked at Mark, who seemed to be wavering between astonished joy and bewilderment. Rising to my feet, I led the way to the door. I was hyperaware of Cross walking beside me. The way he moved, with animal grace and arrogant economy, was a major turn-on. I couldn't imagine him not fucking well and being aggressive about it, taking what he wanted in a way that made a woman wild to give it to him. " I opened my eyes. His face was very serious. "I don't know what you mean," I said, my voice guarded. "It's better if we're not friends," he explained. "Trust me." My eyes narrowed. I'd heard that before. "It's too bad you didn't figure that out earlier," I hissed through my teeth. "You could have saved yourself all this regret." "Regret?" The word, and my tone, obviously caught him off guard. "Regret for what?" "For not just letting that stupid van squish me." He was astonished. He stared at me in disbelief. When he finally spoke, he almost sounded mad. "You think I regret saving your life?" "I know you do," I snapped. "You don't know anything." He was definitely mad. I turned my head sharply away from him, clenching my jaw against all the wild accusations I wanted to hurl at him. I gathered my books together, then stood and walked to the door. I meant to sweep dramatically out of the room, but of course I caught the toe of my boot on the door jamb and dropped

could happen to the Siamese - the Siamese cats' beauty was due to their svelte outlines, which Stirling-Webb felt would be obscured by a long coat. Stirling-Webb therefore recommended either having the queen spayed or mating her to a Black Persian and then mating the offspring together. The owner was "averse to either course" and asked to take the queen to Stirling- Webb for him to see her for himself. Stirling-Webb later wrote: "When I saw this queen, I was astonished at her beauty. Apart from her colouring, she possessed practically no Siamese characteristics, and was reasonably Persian in type. I was also amazed that nothing was known of her origin due to the fact that she had been a stray living in a country churchyard for about six weeks before being adopted by this lady. The police had been informed of her adoption, and advertisements were placed in the local papers in an attempt to contact the original owner, but without success

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Vanemuine Theatre in 1974) is one of his best and mature works. Later, a suite would be arranged from this music.3 It is picturesque and Põldmäe is in his beloved “element”, the score being rich in colours. The music is well suited to the fantastic plot. The timeless action takes place on a nameless island. The ruler Kaspar is an unrestrained despot celebrating his upcoming wedding. The islanders go to the seashore to fish with a seine in order to pay homage to the bride. They are astonished to find a Mermaid in their nets trying in vain to escape back to sea. Kaspar announces that he will spend his wedding night with the Mermaid after the feast. This does not happen because the Mermaid has fled. An example of the use of colour from the beginning of the ballet suite; it is a sound canvas, the flow of time, a lonely island and stillness: 1 First performance by ERSO, 21 June 1970, conducted by Roman Matsov. 2 Taken from the short fantasy story by Friedebert Tuglas. 3

And when these now established freedoms were threatened, the people lashed out the way a dog would if someone tried taking a fresh bone from its mouth. Within hours of the junta's announcement, thousands were in the streets erecting barricades, confronting armed troops, sur- rounding tanks, and defying curfews. The uprising was so swift, so massive, so uni- tary in its opposition to any retreat from the gains of glasnost that after only three riotous days, the astonished officials relented, surrendering their power and plead- ing for mercy from Chairman Gorbachev. Had they been students of history-or of psychology-the failed plotters would not have been so surprised by the tidal wave of popular resistance that swallowed their coup. From the vantage point of ei- ther diSCipline, they could have learned an invariant lesson: Freedoms once granted will not be relinquished without a fight.

ideally matched. His romantic mind thrilled to the stream of history that daily poured through his hands in the form of ambassadorial dispatches, and cryp-tology fired his imagination. He had heard vague tales of cryptanalysts who could pry into secrets of state, and when a 500-word message from Colonel House passed over the wires to President Wilson one night, Yardley, with characteristic audacity, determined to see whether he could solve what must be the most difficult of American codes. He astonished himself by solving it in a few hours.* His success cemented his attachment to cryptanalysis, and he followed this demonstration of the low estate of high-level cryptography with a 100- page memorandum on the solution of American diplomatic codes. While absorbed in possible solutions for a proposed new coding method, he diagnosed what has ever since been known among cryptol-ogists as the "Yardley symptom": "It was the first thing I thought of when I awakened, the last when I fell asleep."
