A sandwich is a food item consisting of one or more types of food placed on or between slices of bread. The sandwich has a long history, but it hasn’t always been as embraced as it is now. HISTORY The sandwich as we know it was popularized in England in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. A linguistic analysis of a lexical field takes the form of a description of the mutual relations among the items in the field. The semantic value of any such item is determined by its relative position in the field. Mosaic: the conceptual substance of language is divided into a number of adjoining small areas, in the way a mosaic divides twodimensional space. Examples of lexical fields - kinship terms - preparation of food - wine-tasting - madness - colour terms (basic colour terms in English: blue, red, yellow, green, purple, brown, black, white grey, pink) contrast relations of maturity and gender: sheep (ram, ewe, lamb); horse ( stallion, mare, foal), human (man, woman, child) 49. Componential analysis = lexical decomposition. = the analysis of aspects of language into contrastive components or distinctive features.

You saved my life. Acknowledgments My deepest gratitude to my editor, Hilary Sares, who really dug into this story and made me work for it. Basically, she kicked my ass. BARED TO YOU wouldn't be what it is without you, Hilary. Thank you so much! To Martha Trachtenberg, copy editor extraordinaire. This book is an important one for me and she treated it that way. British Cuisine Some people criticize English food. They say it's unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it's chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavour that British haven't had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious? If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say "Fish and chips" then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn't lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to a good English restaurant with a reasonable prices. In most cities in Britain you'll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian r...
