Kafka's Hunger Artist

The conflict between the audience and the artist adds to the artist's dissatisfaction with his nourishment. The audience viewing the artist feeds upon the belief the artist is cheating. They continually view the artist only wishing to find him cheating. They express conceit at being confident he is cheating yet no one is ever able to find any form of proof. The butchers desire to know the artist is cheating and ignore him to comfort their suspicions. These internal assurances of the public which pleasure them so also bother them because of the failure to confirm these suspicions. Yet, if the suspicions were to be confirmed, the audience would not be satisfied, and, in fact, feel cheated and frustrated. Humans' conflicting desires is further shown through the viewing public when the artist is exhibited at the circus. As people file past the hunger artist, they only wish to view him when they cannot and when they can,

handkerchief of Desdemona’s and convinces Othello of her improper actions. He stages yet another carefully monitored conversation with Cassio and finishes the job of hardening Othello’s heart, leading to the climax, and tragedy of the play. Othello arranges with Iago the deaths of both Desdemona and Cassio, his wife at his own hands, in the midst of his jealous anger. Because of her pledge to plea for Cassio, Desdemona only further worsens her case to her husband, solidifying his suspicions of their affair. Iago utilizes Roderigo one last time to help him in the murder of Cassio. The two however fail to kill Cassio, instead only wounding him. However, waiting for the cry of his death, Othello hears the attack and immediately takes to his part of the plan, going to Desdemona in her bed and smothering her with a pillow. In the final scenes, Iago’s wife Emilia reveals the ruse to Lodovico and Gratiano, their fellow Venetians, and incurs Iago’s anger, dying at his hands

Later, Emilia picks up the handkerchief and gives it to Iago. He plants it in Cassio's room as an evidence of their affair. Iago tells Othello of the meeting he has planned with Cassio and instructs him to hide nearby and watch as Iago extracts from Cassio the story of his affair with Desdemona. While Othello stands out of earshot, Iago pumps Cassio for information about Bianca, causing Cassio to laugh and confirm Othello's suspicions. Then Bianca enters with Desdemona's handkerchief. When Desdemona enters with Lodovico and Lodovico gives Othello a letter from Venice calling him home and instating Cassio as his replacement, Othello goes over the edge, striking Desdemona and then storming out. That night, Othello is upset and ignores Desdemona's excuses. Later, Othello tells Desdemona to wait for him in bed and to send Emilia away. Iago's plan is going as planned. Iago

Law-makers breaking the law: torture as a justified interrogation technique?

that witches were possessed by the devil, torture was justified. Because of it, nearly all admitted to being possessed and therefore also others were blamed of witchcraft. In places where there was more torture, there were also more convictions. Torture with the aim to obtain information is therefore of no use for many reasons. There has to be an existing idea of the kind of information someone is suspected of possessing. The person tortured will of course confirm these suspicions if it relieves the pain. This of course says nothing about the truthfulness of the confession. Torture thus simply confirms existing expectations and contributes nothing to the truth. The prohibition of self-incrimination exists mainly because of the belief that the truth should not come forth from self-incrimination. Force often even has the opposite effect to finding the truth. Hobbes (v. 1995) said that "what is confessed in such a situation

Extended essay: To what extent does a plant-based diet lower the risk of coronary artery disease?

cholesterol levels in meat eaters are significantly higher [Table 2 in appendix]. Not only that, but vegetarians seem to consume significantly more fiber than meat eaters do. Higher cholesterol and lower fiber intake must be related to lower mortality rates when it comes to coronary artery disease.
15 The cholesterol debate In spite of these findings there are, and have always been, suspicions when it comes to animal derived foods and how they raise blood cholesterol levels. There’s a widespread perception that cholesterol isn’t to blame. However in 1913 a Russian pathologist, Nikolai N. Anitschkow, tested hypercholesterolemia on rabbits. He isolated cholesterol from an egg yolk then dissolved it in sunflower oil and fed it to rabbits. It took a couple of weeks for him to notice how their arteries developed raised yellow lesions that were rich in ‘’lipoids’’.

I tell you I saw with my own eyes his shamelessness. MADAME PERNELLE Their tongues for spitting venom never lack, There's nothing here below they'll not attack. ORGON Your speech has not a single grain of sense. I saw it, harkee, saw it, with these eyes I saw--d'ye know what saw means?--must I say it A hundred times, and din it in your ears? MADAME PERNELLE My dear, appearances are oft deceiving, And seeing shouldn't always be believing. ORGON I'll go mad. MADAME PERNELLE False suspicions may delude, And good to evil oft is misconstrued. ORGON Must I construe as Christian charity The wish to kiss my wife! MADAME PERNELLE You must, at least, Have just foundation for accusing people, And wait until you see a thing for sure. ORGON The devil! How could I see any surer? Should I have waited till, before my eyes, He . . . No, you'll make me say things quite improper. place for him, and failing entirely -- I saw that his four siblings of sorts were sitting together at the same table, and he was not with them. Mike intercepted us and steered us to his table. Jessica seemed elated by the attention, and her friends quickly joined us. But as I tried to listen to their easy chatter, I was terribly uncomfortable, waiting nervously for the moment he would arrive. I hoped that he would simply ignore me when he came, and prove my suspicions false. He didn't come, and as time passed I grew more and more tense. I walked to Biology with more confidence when, by the end of lunch, he still hadn't showed. Mike, who was taking on the qualities of a golden retriever, walked faithfully by my side to class. I held my breath at the door, but Edward Cullen wasn't there, either. I exhaled and went to my seat. Mike followed, talking about an upcoming trip to the beach. He lingered by my desk till the bell rang. Then he smiled at me

It was generally evident whenever they met, that he did admire her and to her it was equally evident that Jane was yielding to the preference which she had begun to entertain for him from the first, and was in a way to be very much in love; but she considered with pleasure that it was not likely to be discovered by the world in general, since Jane united, with great strength of feeling, a composure of temper and a uniform cheerfulness of manner which would guard her from the suspicions of the impertinent. She mentioned this to her friend Miss Lucas. "It may perhaps be pleasant," replied Charlotte, "to be able to impose on the public in such a case; but it is sometimes a disadvantage to be so very guarded. If a woman conceals her affection with the same skill from the object of it, she may lose the opportunity of fixing him; and it will then be but poor consolation to believe the world equally in the dark. The parents of these children had to rent the tuxes and spend a lot of money making the dresses for the girls. Then they had to rent limousines for almost 12 hours when you take into consideration the travel and waiting time. Then they had to worry about 35 stupid Caucasian “skin-heads” feeling superior and threatening these children. And even more threatening was the Police in that area confronting them with all kinds of suspicions and arresting them. Even in our own city, the Mayorall ball, where thousands of dollars are spent, is held in West Orange, which is more than 85% Caucasian, from a city which is more than 95% Black. The Black over-dependency on others to do everything for us, and over-indulgence in criticizing others for our failures, is one of our greatest weaknesses and incontrovertible evidence of mental denial. allusions and classical quotations, and he appears to have been able to solve ciphers in Latin, French, and Italian and, less proficiently, in Spanish. The only known physical description of him comes from the pen of Mary of Scots herself, who describes Phelippes, whose hair and beard were blond, as "of low stature, slender every way, eated in the face with small pocks, of short sight, thirty years of age by appearance." Mary's unflattering comments betrayed her suspicions about Phelippes—suspicions that were well founded. For Phelippes and his master, Walsingham, were casting a jaundiced eye on Mary for reasons that, in their turn, were equally well founded. Mary was the heir apparent to the throne of England. She was also nominally queen of Scotland, though she had been ejected in a tangled series of - events and had been prevented from returning by the opposition of the strong Protestant party there to her indiscretions. She was a remarkable woman: beautiful, possessed of
