Great Coastal Gate & Fat Margaret’s Tower

In the Middle Ages the Great Coastal Gate was about 300 footsteps from the harbour. Legends say, that during storms, the waves reached the gate. . In the 16th century, a powerful cannon tower was built next to the Great Coastal Gate. It had 155 loopholes, diameter of 25 meters, and a height of about 20 meters. The tower was named Roosikrantsi, but as it was the stoutest tower in the Wall, people started to call it "Fat Margaret". Through history, the cannon tower has also served as a storehouse for gunpowder and weapons, and as a prison. The Fat Margaret's Tower houses the Estonian Maritime Museum, with a permanent exhibit on Estonian maritime and fishing history. The viewing platform on the roof affords a lovely view onto the Old Town and the bay. I hope you will enjoy the visit. reflects information from our visual system; echoic memory, which stores information coming from ears; and corresponding memories for each of the other senses. Short-Term Memory: Our Working Memory. Short-term memory is the memory store in which material first has meaning, although the maximum length of retention is relatively short. The specific amount of information that can be held in short-term memory has been identified 7 ±2 items. Long-Term Memory: The Final Storehouse. Material that makes its way from short-term memory to long-term memory enters a storehouse of almost unlimited capacity. Evidence of the existence of long-term memory, as distinct from short-term memory, comes from a number of sources. Because short-term memory following the injury appears to be operative – new 2 material can be recalled, we can infer that there are two distinct types of memory – one for short-team and one for long-term storage

Its height is 38 meters and its walls are 4 meters thick. The tower was just high enough that its guards had a view into the kitchens of neighbouring buildings. The tower s name, "peek in the kitchen", comes from its height. The tower was partially destroyed during the Livonian War (1558-1583), but the building itself did not fall. The tower has been rebuilt several times, but up until the 20th century, it was still being used as a gunpowder storage and storehouse. Today the tower tells the story of the birth and development of Tallinn and the most important military events from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The external wall still holds stone and iron cannonballs from Russian tsar Ivan IV. The Great Coastal Gate, built along with the city wall, is situated on the northern side of the Old Town, near the harbour. During the reconstruction of the gate in the early 16th century, the cannon tower Fat Margaret was added

The Domician Monastery

THE DOMINICAN St. CATHERINE`S MONASTERY One of the best-kept secrets of Tallinn is to be found in the very center of the city. Located near Viru Street, between Müürivahe and Vene Streets, is a medieval Dominican monastery which reveals a fascinating dimension of the city's history. The Dominican Order was founded by a Spaniard, Saint Dominic Gusman, in 1216. Up to that moment only bishops were permitted to preach, but their performance was inadequate beause of the time they had to devote to the administrstion of their dioceses. The result was that many Christians heard the Word of God rarely if at all . Dominic envisioned the creation of a body of trained theologians who would scatter throughout Europe and proclaim the gospel in the most remote areas. The nordic countries appear very early on the Dominic anagenda. To reach Tallinn the friars followed the trade route along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, and reached Estonia some 7...

New Zealand - lühireferaat

................................................................................ About 80-100 million years ago, New Zealand drifted away from the massive supercontinent of Gondwanaland into the South Pacific. Since then, a unique flora and fauna has evolved, with a large number of beautiful native birds and plants, as well as direct descendants of prehistoric wildlife, including the tuatara, weta (the world's heaviest insect), and giant snail. As Time magazine said, New Zealand is an "ultimate storehouse for discontinued zoological models". A reptile with links to the dinosaur, the native tuatara is found mainly on islands around New Zealand's coast. Every species of this reptile family, except the tuatara, died out around 65 million years ago. Tuatara can live for over 100 years, and were once found throughout New Zealand. Now only around 30,000 are found on protected offshore islands.

the Fat Margaret cannon tower was added. Built from 1511 to 1530, this hefty, round tower has a diameter of 25 metres, a height of about 20 metres, and walls up to 5 metres thick. The origins of Fat Margaret's name are a mystery. Some theories insist it was named for one of its larger cannons, while others hint at a cook called Margaret who once worked here. In any case, the tower has served a number of different functions throughout its history. It has been used a storehouse for gunpowder and weapons, and as a prison. Now it's home to the Estonian Maritime Museum, which provides a detailed look at the nation's seafaring past. 3 churches of the lower town Niguliste - 13th-century Gothic church-turned art museum. stretches east to Labrador, south to Kingston on Lake Ontario and northwest as far as the Arctic Ocean. The Shield is considered to be the nucleus of the North American continent and is made up of roots of ancient mountains. Its gneiss and granite rocks are 3.5 billion years old, three quarters the age of the Earth. Scraped by the advance and retreat of glaciers, the Shield has only a thin layer of soil that supports a boreal forest of spruce, fir, tamarack and pine. The region is a storehouse of minerals, including gold, silver, zinc, copper and uranium, and Canada's great mining towns are located there: Sudbury and Timmins in Ontario, Val d'Or in Quebec, and Flin Flon and Thompson in Manitoba. St. Lawrence Lowlands - The Great Lakes Southern Quebec and Ontario, the industrial heartland of Canada, contain Canada's two largest cities, Montreal and Toronto. In this small region, 50 percent of Canadians live and 70 percent of Canada's manufactured goods are produced.

The Most Important Buildings in Lai Street in Tallinn

It is the town's former horse-powered treadmill, where grain was ground for the city folk in times of war, when the enemy besieged the city and the watermills at the moat outside the city gates stopped, or in winter when mill wheels were frozen. The first record of the mill dates back to 1379. It was thoroughly repaired in the first half of the 16th century, in 1701-1702 it was again under repairs and by 1741 once more dilapidated. Then it was turned over to the army as a storehouse. In 1757 the mill and the palace of Peter I in its vicinity burnt down. The ruins were rented out in 1772 to be built into stores. In the late 19th and early 20th century St Olaf's congregation used the building as a hearse-shed. Nothing has remained of the mill's equipment, in general such mills used horses as a power source. Moving in circle they operated the millstone in the basement by means of gear system. Today the building belongs to the city and is used by the City Theatre. 12

14. Etymological doublets Doublet – one of two or more words derived from one source: • fragile (< Latin fragilis ), frail (< Old French frele) • Triplet – three such words, e.g. • Cattle / chattel / capital Dialect-based doublets: road (from ride on horseback), raid (from same), shirt ( from skirt), in Anglo-borman and French: guarantee (warrant in French is garant), thesaurus (treasure, storehouse, this is from Greek), computer (in French it means count). Etymological doublets are two or more words of the same lan¬guage which were derived by different routes from the same basic word, but differing in meaning and phonemic shape. For example, the word 'fact' ('факт, действительность') and 'feat' ('подвиг') are derived from the same Latin word 'facere' ('делать') but 'fact' was borrowed directly from Latin and 'feat' was borrowed through French

with a mass audience. If you want to understand the ideas behind the Hero's Journey, there's no substitute for actually reading Campbell's work. It's an experience that has a way of changing people. It's also a good idea to read a lot of myths, but reading Campbell's work amounts to the same thing since Campbell is a master storyteller who delights in illustrating his points with examples from the rich storehouse o f mythology. Campbell gives an outline of the Hero's Journey in Chapter IV, " T h e Keys," of The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I've taken the l i b e r t y o f amending the outline slighdy, trying to reflect some of the common themes in movies with illustrations drawn from contemporary films and a few classics. You can compare the two outlines and terminology by examining Table One. 5
