Westminster Abbey

Confessor and opened in 1065. It is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country and in the world. In 1066, it saw its first coronation, that of William the Conqueror. Since then, nearly every king and queen has been coronated there. On 17 September 2010, Pope Benedict XVI became the first pope to set foot in Westminster Abbey. The Abbey has also been the church since 1066. Many of England's most illustrious statesmen, generals, politicians and artists have been buried there. It is also the final resting place of seventeen monarchs. Westminster School and Westminster Abbey Choir School are also in the precincts of the Abbey. The Westminster Abbey Museum is located in the 11th-century vaulted undercroft beneath the former monks' dormitory. This is one of the oldest areas of the Abbey and this space has been used as a museum since 1908. What can you see there?

I was executed for treason and Cromwell became Lord Protector. England was now a Republic but the monarchy (together with the Anglican Church and the House of Lords) was restored in 1660. The Great Fire of London took place in 1666 and it destroyed most of the city. After the Stuarts the House of Hannover came to throne. The most important ruler of this time was Queen Victoria. During Queen Victoria's sixty-four year reign (1837-1901) the British Empire, led by an array of great statesmen and supported by great industrial expansion, grew to a size so vast that `the sun never sets upon it'. Victoria's long reign saw many changes in British constitutions and the British `way of life'. Her rejection of the amusements and life of the aristocracy enabled the common people to identify themselves with this simple wife and window, which led to a revival of popular support for the monarchy. She stressed the value of family and she had middle-class views and life-style.

After moving to England, he adopted history paintings. Subsidiary artists: Thomas Smith, the Gansevoort Limner, John Smibert, Robert Feke, John Wollaston, Joseph Blackburn, Benjamin West. Republican Period Portraiture. The Revolutionary War sparked the interest in portraits of national heroes and statesmen. Portraiture remained "practical", was official and private. The first museums were established and first art exhibitions held. Realism persisted. Peale employed trompe-l'oeil ("deception", giving the impression of three dimensions). Peale, Stuart and Trumbull all painted George Washington's portraits which were demanded and worshipped by the public. Military was romanticized by scenes of battle and theatrical postures.

is permitted to exercise almost all of the monarch's Royal Prerogative, though there are some duties which must be specifically performed by, or bills that require assent by, the king or queen. The government is defined by the constitution as the Queen acting on the advice of her privy council. The Privy Council consists mostly of former members of parliament, chief justices of the Supreme Court, and other elder statesmen. The day- to-day operation of government is guided only by a sub-group of the Privy Council made up of individuals who hold seats in parliament. This body of ministers of the Crown is the Cabinet. One of the main duties of the Crown is to ensure that a democratic government is always in place, which means appointing a prime minister (at present Justin Trudeau) to thereafter head the Cabinet. Per convention, the governor general must

into war, engender naval battles and win them, compel besieged cities to yield, condemn queens to death and exile priestly conspirators from their homeland. Cryptanalysis hammers upon the real world. Cryptography does not. Consequently, the telegraph, which affected only cryptography, had had a wholly internal influence upon cryptology. That a hierarchy of special systems had arisen to displace the nomenclator interested only cryptologists; it did not matter to generals or statesmen. And although the telegraph greatly increased the volume of communications, wiretapping could produce intercepts only at rare and irregular intervals. Cryptanalysis could exercise only transient and haphazard effects. Its potential remained largely unfulfilled. Kerckhoffs accurately regarded it as an auxiliary to cryptography, a means to the end of perfecting military codes and ciphers. Cryptanalysis during the telegraph years was interesting but inconsequential, intriguing but academic—an

than 150 members), acted immediately, with the support of the occupying Soviet troops, power was transferred into the hands of the communists in the same month. After crudely falsified “elections” the new authorities declared Estonia a Soviet Republic and in August it was officially incorporated into the USSR. Everything was to be reshaped according to the Soviet model; it included terror, imprisonment and deportation. The eminent statesmen General Johan Laidoner (Commander-in-Chief of the Estonian Army), President Konstantin Päts, Premier Kaarel Eenpalu, ex-Premier Jaan Tõnisson and many other prominent public figures were arrested and, with thousands of others, either died or disappeared without trace in the Soviet prison camps. The sweeping deportation action in June 1941 wiped out any illusions about the communist rule. During the first Soviet year, approximately 19,000 Estonian citizens were deported.
