Souli kõrgperiood oli 1960.ndatel aastatel ning oli vahetult seotud ameerika musta muusikaga - gospeli ning bluusi ja rhythm and blues'iga. 1970- ndatel levis ja teisenes muusikazanr kiiresti ning tekitas mitmeid alaliike. Tuntuimad neist on: Motown soul, Deep soul, Chicago soul, Philadelphia soul ning Neo soul. Igal alaliigil tehti väikesi muutusi, kuid zanr ise jäi samaks. · Souli tüüpilisemad pillid on kitarr, basskitarr, trummid, klaver, orel ning teised klahvpillid. Soul on ajaga pidevalt muutunud ning järgmised põlvkonnad on souli edasi arendanud. Soulijuurtega tänapäeva muusikazanrid on funk, disko, hip hop ja R&B. Soul-muusika isaks peetakse tihti Ray Charlesi, kes ühendas
rokkmuusika tunnusjooned. Veel on seotud sellised muusikastiilid: ethno rock, folk metal, folc punk ja psühhedeeliline folk. Põhiliselt kasutatakse selliseid instrumente, nagu kitarr, bandzo ja suupill. Laulja saadab end tavaliselt ise. Tuntuimad nimed folk rockis : Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Byrds jt. Mõju avaldas Soul hiphopi ja disko kujunemisele. Souli arengut aitasid 2 plaadifirmat Tamla Motown ja Stax Tamla Motowni suund oli tantsumuusika. Iseloomulikuks olid valju ja võimsa sünkopeeritud rütmiga basskäigud, keerukas orkestratsioon, gospellikud vokaalharmooniad ja hooklines fraasid. Laulutekstid olid sentimentaalsed.
