on the stake there. The fact how this setting changed during five chapters is described in a quote from chapter eight ,,The other time the air had seemed to vibrate with heat; but now it threatened." Simon's secret place had turned from unearthy paradise into something terrifying and that also symbolised how the boys had become savages already. Without noticing the natural cruelty inside them developed, savagery instincts emerged and most of them stopped caring about civilisation. The reason why the characters in the novel turned from decent British boys into small savages is hidden in human nature. All the boys were used to have grown-ups around and then they were suddenly thrown into a situation where there were non. At first they were thrilled with happiness but like usually when children are left alone in the dark they start to fear and that happened to these boys also

Scotland I

1. Why is the early Scottish history often mythologised? Early Scottish history is often mythologised because its earliest records are almost always written by others (for example Tacitus). 2. Directly and indirectly, what did the Hadrian Wall represent? It represented directly the border of the Roman colonies in Britain and indirectly the ‘’end of the world’’, where true (Roman) civilization ended and savagery began. A History Of Scotland - Episode 1 - The Last Of The Free (2/6) 1. Why shouldn`t we call the Pictish society barbarian? They were affluent, had a good diet, were very organized, probably communicated with people far away 2. What were the differences between the Gaels and the Picts? They converted to Christianity before the Picts 3. Why was it relatively easy for Columba to convert the locals (mostly Gaels)? Columba had

He worked in dry-brush watercolor and tempera. His themes included loneliness in nature and the outdoors, and nostalgia. His technique was meticulous and clinically direct. He strived for the verisimilitude of the photograph. His paintings display social and psychological tension and the savagery of the life during the era. He reduced his compositions to their bare essence. Subsidiary artists: Paul Cadmus, Jared French, George Tooker, Ivan Albright. Post-1960 General Trends. Critics searched something to re-establish a connection with the past. The borders between painting and sculpture became blurred. Concept art stressed the idea of the artist over material execution to transform art from physical objects to mental images. Pop Art

Kantorek's rhetoric and grow to despise him, especially after the death of Joseph Behm. That Kantorek is eventually drafted and makes a terrible soldier reflects the uselessness of the ideals that he touts. Corporal Himmelstoss Like Kantorek, Himmelstoss does not figure heavily in the novel's plot, but his thematic importance makes him significant to the book as a whole. One of the themes of All Quiet on the Western Front is that war brings out a savagery and hunger for power that lie latent in many people, even if they are normally respectable, nonviolent citizens. Himmelstoss is just such a figure: an unthreatening postman before the war, he evolves into the "terror of Klosterberg," the most feared disciplinarian in the training camps. Himmelstoss is extremely cruel to his recruits, forcing them to obey ridiculous and dangerous orders simply because he enjoys bullying them.

Hoffman adopts the hegemonic Western cliche´ of `the other Europe' as `less developed, less civilized, more turbulent and strife-ridden, [. . .] a source either of primitive savagery or of operetta entertainment' (1999, p. 11). tus. 2.2 Evolutsionism Evolutsionism e arenguõpetus kujunes välja 19. saj keskpaiku. See oli kantud ideest selgitada välja, millised etapid peab ühiskond läbima oma teel primitiivsest komp- leksseks, homogeensest heterogeenseks, irratsionaalsest ratsionaalseks. Oluline roll oli Ameerika antropoloogil L. H. Morganil: As it is undeniable that portions of the human family have existed in a state of savagery, other portions in a state of barbarism, and still other portions in a state of civilization, it seems equally so that these three distinct conditions are connected with each other in a natural as well as necessary sequence of progress (Ancient Society, 1877). Üldiselt kujutasid evolutsionistid inimkonna arengut ette lineaarselt. Siiski märgivad nii Morgan kui Tylor diffusionismi võimalikkust. Väärarvamus üldisest inimloomusest

The key word for Crevecoeur was "new," which separated and distinguished Americans from things European. In Letters, Crevecoeur thus blended his collection of facts and observations into a fictional portrait of an industrious farmer, one whose natural response to the land became identified with the general character of a new American people. Yet while Crevecoeur echoed Jefferson, Thomas's agrarian ideals, his letters also acknowledged the realities of frontier savagery and southern slavery. After taking a post as a French consul in 1783, Crevecoeur published little in English, though he did publish a French revision of Letters (1787) and a final book on his American experiences: Voyage dans la Haute Pensylvanie et dans l'état de NewYork (1801). Letters from an American Farmer is an excellent example of how a New World American thinks about the many changes occurring and that have occurred during the era of Enlightenment

I much more. ; - The radio, however, turned over to the commander a i copy of every enemy cryptogram it conveyed. It furnished a constant stream of intercepts. And with these, cryptanaly-sis could bear continually upon operations, could be depended upon for information, could affect events decisively. The generals and the statesmen took notice. This was no longer a polite trifling discussion; this had become a weapon, a pursuit entailing all the savagery of warfare and life against death. Radio made cryptanalysis an end in itself, elevating it to an importance coordinate with that of cryptography, if not superior' to it. Radio's impact upon cryptology reverberated in the outside world. Wire and wireless thus complemented one another. The telegraph created modern cryptography; the radio, modern cryptanalysis. The one developed cryptology internally, the other externally. The telegraphy had
