photo, petersburg, photos, netcat, gallery, gamer, original, catherineAgainst the background of such political moderation, two critics of serfdom clearly stand out. They represent two generations of the Livonian Enlightenment -- pastor Johann Georg Eisen (17171779) and the man of letters Garlieb Merkel (17691850). Eisen was not merely concerned with the Baltic provinces, but he was the first to demand the abolition of serfdom and the peasants' right to land throughout Russia. He laid his hopes on enlightened absolutism, trying to convince the empress Catherine II and the Russian high nobility of the social-economic inefficiency of serfdom. Merkel treated the ancient Livonian and Estonian peoples, or Latvians and Estonians, not only as suppressed peasants, but as nations forced into serfdom whose development had thus been artificially hampered. 6|Page Catherine II (17621796), on the whole, favored the Enlightenment. Her politics of
schools and official management, emphasised the importance of folklore, equal rights of all nations to existence, and the advancement of the church in the spiritual life of the nation. Carl Robert Jakobson (1841-1882), as well as being a journalist, writer and educationalist, was an active politician and ideologist; his ideal was to have a free Estonian farmer, independent of the German landlord, achieving this status through the redemption of his land. The original literature of the period well represented the time; nationalist ideas together with protests against the privileges of the Baltic-German nobility stood in the forefront. Historical topics were often written in prose, for example, stories by Eduard Bornhöhe (1862-1923), Tasuja (Avenger), novels by Andres Saal (1861-1931), such as 1 Its subject matter included articles about Estonian and European music, musicians, folk music, composing, etc. Vambola

The Anatomy of Cryptology Suggestions for Further Reading Index A Note on the Abridged Version MANY PEOPLE have urged me to put out a paperback edition of The Codebreakers. Here it is. It comprises about a third of the original. This was as big as the publishers and I could make it and still keep the price within reason. In cutting the book, I retained mainly stories about how codebreaking has affected history, particularly in World War II, and major names and stages in the history of cryptology. I eliminated all source notes and most of the technical matter, as well as material peripheral to strict codebreaking such as biographies, the

6. Taganejagi komistab ja enamasti oma saamatuse otsa. 7. Tulijat iseloomustatakse välimuse põhjal, minejat tegude järgi. 8. Iseloomujooned vajavad soodsat pinnast, et täies hiilguses õide puhkeda. 9. Kergem on näidata näpuga teise inimese kui iseenda peale. 10. Hing saab kergesti täis, rahakott aga mitte kunagi. 11. Enesekiitust ei pea teostama alati kiituse vormis. 12.
