William the Conqueror

The tactic was a great success. Then came the turning point of the battle and the English wall was defeated. So finally the Normans victory was complete. English resistance · The Northumbria was still not surrendered Northumbria is primarily the name of both a medieval petty kingdom of the Angles people, in what is now north east England and southern Scotland. In 1068, with Edgar Etheling, both Mercia and Northumbria revolted. · William devastated Northumbria William then devastated Northumbria between the Humber and Tees rivers, with his Harrying of the North. After this cruel treatment the land did not recover for more than 100 years. It may have stopped future rebellions, scaring the English people into obedience. In 1071, William defeated the last rebellion of the north. In 1072, he invaded Scotland, defeating Malcolm. And finally the rebellions were quelled !

The Norman Conquest

Saxons. The lords and the barons were French-speaking Normans. There were two basic principles to feudalism: every man had a lord, and every lord had land. The king was connected through this `chain' of people to the lowest man in the country. On the other hand, each lord had responsibilities to his vassals. He had to give them land and protection. William faced serious resistance in his early years as king. The people of northern England, helped by Danish force, revolted in 1069. William crushed this rising mercilessly. But stories were later written about Hereward the Wake, a heroic Saxon rebel, who resisted the Normans in the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire. The Normans built many stone churches, including St. Bartholomew-the-Great in London. Norman churches and castles had thick walls, huge columns, and round-headed arches. An early type of Norman castle was a motte and bailey. This type of castle

The Saxons & Vikings

The Saxons & Vikings Fragmentary knowledge of England in the 5th & 6th centuries comes from the British writer Gildas, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, saints' lives, poetry, archaelogical findings and place- name studies. British landlords ruled small, unstable kingdoms and continued some Roman traditions of governance. In the mid-5th cent, Vertigern, a British leader, hired Germanic mercenaries to help defend against peoples of the north (Picts & Scots). In the end they revolted & the process of invasion and settlement began. The first Saxon ,,kings" were Hengist & Horsa in Kent, Aelle in Sussex, Cerdic / Cynric in Wessex. So the first ,,English" became mainly from Northern Germany & Denmark. The resistance of the Celts was long. They were free at the time, not like other Roman provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was

The Middle Ages

The Black Prince who was the living example of chivalry in England, was feared in France for his cruelty. Ed III reigned for 50 years (died in 1377). His soldier son, the Black Prince died in 1376.Ed III's 10-year-old grandson became King Richard II. The boy's uncle John Gaunt, ruled for him. Richard II was less fortunate. He had neither diplomatic skills nor popularity. He had bad advisers (a tax for every person over the age of 15). Landlords tried to force peasants back to serfdom. People revolted, their leader was Wat Tyler. R II managed to put it down, but the revolt was a warning to the king & nobles. R II was the 2nd king to be killed by ambitious lords. He had no children. There were 2 possible successors: 1) the earl of March, the 7-year- old grandson of Ed III's second son; 2) Henry on Lancaster, son of John of Gaunt. It was difficult to say who had better claim to the throne, but Henry was stronger. He took the crown by force. Became Henry IV

Netherlands

After the fall of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna restored the independence of the Netherlands in 1815. In addition, the territory now comprising Belgium was made part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. (3) 11 The reunion of the two regions was not a happy one, for they had become widely disparate in political background, tradition, religion, language, and economy. In 1830 the Belgians revolted and established their independence as a sovereign state. A conference in London of the major European powers formulated the conditions of separation in 1831. The Dutch king under pressure from France and Great Britain accepted the stipulations. But when they were later revised by the conference in favor of the Belgians, a Dutch army invaded Belgium and routed the opposing forces. The conditions of separation were again revised and were finally accepted by both countries in 1839. (3) 2

mischievously construed. Her colour changed, and she said no more. Mrs. Gardiner was standing a little behind; and on her pausing, he asked her if she would do him the honour of introducing him to her friends. This was a stroke of civility for which she was quite unprepared; and she could hardly suppress a smile at his being now seeking the acquaintance of some of those very people against whom his pride had revolted in his offer to herself. "What will be his surprise," thought she, "when he knows who they are? He takes them now for people of fashion." The introduction, however, was immediately made; and as she named their relationship to herself, she stole a sly look at him, to see how he bore it, and was not without the expectation of his decamping as fast as he could from such disgraceful companions. That he was surprised by the connection was evident; he sustained it, however, with fortitude, and

expect suddenly become less available, they desire them more than ever and often rise up violently to secure them. For instance, it is little recognized that at the time of the American Revolution, the colonists had the highest standard of living and the lowest taxes in the Western World. According to historian Thomas Fleming (1997), it wasn't until the British sought a cut of this widespread prosperity (by levy- ing taxes) that the Americans revolted. Davies has gathered persuasive evidence for his novel thesis from a range of revolutions, revolts, and internal wars, including the French, Russian, and Egyptian revolutions, as well as such domestic uprisings as Dorr's Rebellion in nineteenth- century Rhode Island, the American Civil War, and the urban black riots of the 1960s. In each case, a time of increasing well-being preceded a tight cluster of re- versals that burst into violence.
