pay a bridal gift to the bride, as stipulated in the contract. A man may have up to four wives if he believes he can treat them equally, while a woman may have only one husband. In most Muslim countries, the process of divorce in Islam is known as talaq, which the husband initiates by pronouncing the word "divorce". Scholars disagree whether Islamic holy texts justify traditional Islamic practices such as veiling and seclusion. Starting in the 20th century, Muslim social reformers argued against these and other practices such as polygamy in Islam, with varying success. At the same time, many Muslim women have attempted to reconcile tradition with modernity by combining an active life with outward modesty. Certain Islamist groups like the Taliban have sought to continue traditional law as applied to women. Modern times (1918present)
disease and taking a bath would relieve his pain. Accordingly, David painted him dead in a bathtub, almost in a Christ like pose. The wound on Marat's right chest can be compared to Jesus's wounds when he was crucified, and therefore Marat seems like a hero dying for a noble cause. Moreover, with depicting Marat as Christ, although David himself and Marat were both atheists, Jacques-Louis David in a way creates a new religion, praising the social reformers of the French Revolution. (Rosenblum, Woldermar-Jansen, 1984, p.30) In 1793 David gave a speech while presenting The death of Marat, where he calls citizens to honor and praise Marat: "Hurry, all of you! Mothers, widows, orphans, oppressed soldiers, all whom he defended at the risk of his life, approach and contemplate your friend; he who was so vigilant is no more; his pen, the terror of traitors, his pen has slipped from his hand! Grieve! Our tireless friend is dead
The transcendentalists felt called upon to resist the "vulgar prosperity of the barbarian"; believed firmly in democracy, and insisted on an intense individualism. Some of the extremists in their number went so far as to evolve a system of dietetics and to rule out coffee, wine and tobacco all on the basis that the body was the temple of the soul and that for the tenant's sake it was well to keep the dwelling undefiled. And most of the transcendentalists were by nature reformers, though Emerson, - the most vocal interpreter of the group refused to go so far in this direction as, for instance, Bronson Alcott. Emerson's position here is that it is man's responsibility to be "a brave and upright man, who must find or cut a straight path to everything excellent in the earth, and not only go honourably himself, but make it easier for all who follow him to go in honor and with benefit." In this way most of the reforms were

Shortly after the meeting began, local magistrates called on the military authorities to arrest Hunt and to disperse the crowd. Cavalry charged into the crowd and 15 people were killed, 400700 were injured. Peterloo's immediate effect was to cause the government to crack down on reform, with the passing of what became known as the Six Acts. *The campaign for parliamentary reform from mid C18 into the C20 The idea for reform was a slow process. The reformers caused those in power some concern and were repressed by a series of measures. The Great Reform Act abolished many small towns - their seats being redistributed to form new towns. The Second Reform Act extended suffrage to all borough householders. Corrupt practices were eventually stopped by the Corrupt Practices Act, which was established as a result of public outcry from the findings of a Royal Commission. The Act imposed penalties for bribery and set maximums levels to be spent on
Uncle Tom's Cabin helped many 19thcentury Americans determine what kind of country they wanted. Immediately after its publication, Uncle Tom's Cabin was both lauded as an achievement and attacked as inaccurate: The most liberal abolitionists felt the book was not strong enough in its call to immediately end slavery, disliked Stowe's tacit support of the colonization movement, and suggested that Stowe's main character Tom was not forceful enough. More moderate antislavery advocates and reformers praised the book for putting a human face on those held in slavery, emphasizing the impact slavery had on families, and helping the public understand and empathize with the plight of enslaved mothers. Proslavery forces claimed that slavery was sanctioned in the Bible, that Tom was too noble, and accused Stowe of fabricating unrealistic, onesided images of Southern slavery. Stowe responded to her critics by writing The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin, an annotated bibliography of her sources
live on the margins of society they feel they have little in common with. Some turn to drugs because hey find living in this world too painful. Others eventually become healers or spiritual teachers, that is to say, teachers of Being. In past ages, they would probably have been called contemplatives. There is no place for them, it seems, in our contemporary civilization. On the arising new earth, however, their role is just as vital as that of the creators, the doers, the reformers. Their function is to anchor the frequency of the new consciousness on his planet. I call them the frequency-holders. They are here to generate consciousness through the activities of daily life, through their interactions with others as well as through “just being.” In this way, they endow the seemingly insignificant with profound meaning. Their task is to bring spacious stillness into this world by being absolutely Present in whatever they do
