Gross (2001) has proposed a "process model of ER", with underlying conception of emotion-generative process that distinguishes between antecendent-focused and response-focused ER strategies. Antecedent-focused strategies include actions before the full activation of emotion response tendencies that endorse changes in behaviour and peripheral physiological responses (cognitive change e.g reappraisal; see figure 1). Response-focused strategies include the actions after response tendencies have been generated and emotion is already in progress (response modulation e.g suppression).
