Rolfe, one of the first tobacco farmers, and the union brought a modicum of peace to tidewater Virginia. Known as Lady Rebecca Rolfe, Pocahontas traveled with her husband and infant son, Thomas, to England, where she was received as foreign royalty, an Indian Princess. On March 17th, 1617, she died from an infection in Gravesend, England at the age of twenty-two. Immediately, the tenuous peace between the Powhatan and the English crumbled and the brutality rose on both sides. Northwest Ordinance of 1787 "An Ordinance for the Government of the Territory of the United States North West of the River Ohio," was adopted by the Confederation Congress on July 13, 1787. Also known as the the Ordinance of 1787, the Northwest Ordinance established a government for the Northwest Territory, outlined the process for admitting a new state to the Union, and guaranteed that newly created states would be equal to the original thirteen states

competitor's cash register. I would rather it go to you which is why I am writing. I think it's a tragedy when a group of obnoxious idiots are allowed to interfere with our daily lives and pursuits. At times, I get some of that noise near my home, and I certainly call the police when I hear offenders in my own neighborhood. My insistence at having them enforce current regulations in my area has made a difference. I am also reviewing our local noise ordinance and speaking with others who are interested in putting an end to this offensive behavior that takes away from our quality of life. When the boom box noise has been controlled in this area, I would be pleased to begin using your store again. I encourage you to work with the local police department to greatly strengthen enforcement of our noise ordinances. You are losing business because of the contant presence of boom cars. Yours truly, Kelli Sepp

canals and railroads. After the "wheat frontier" had passed through an area, more diversified farms including dairy cattle generally took its place. Warmer regions saw plantings of cotton and herds of beef cattle. In the early colonial south, raising tobacco and cotton was common, especially through the use of slave labour until the Civil War. In the northeast, slaves were used in agriculture until the early 19th century. In the Midwest, slavery was prohibited by the Freedom Ordinance of 1787. Nowadays less than 2% of the population is engaged in agriculture. Large stretches of level or gently rolling land, especially in the Midwest provide ideal conditions for large-scale agriculture. The farms have narrow specialization, are very well mechanized and have high productivity. Besides providing its own people with food, the US has sent much food to other countries. Dairy cattle are bred mainly in the eastern part, beef cattle in the prairies. Poultry farms are near big cities

or liberty, to alien his power over his children to any other; whence we find the sale and gift of children to have much been in use in the beginning of the world, when men had their servants for a possession and an inheritance, as well as other goods; whereupon we find the power of castrating and making eunuchs much in use in old times, Observations,p. 155. Law is nothing else but the will of him that hath the power of the supreme father, Observations, p. 223. It was God's ordinance that the supremacy should be unlimited in Adam, and as large as all the acts of his will; and as in him so in all others that have supreme power, Observations, p. 245. I have been fain to trouble my reader with these several quotations in our author's own words, that in them might be seen his own description of his fatherly authority, as it lies scattered up and down in his writings, which he supposes was first vested in Adam, and by right belongs to all princes ever since.
" After passage of the law, then, gun buying had become a frequent activity in Kennesaw, but not among those it was intended to cover; they were massively noncompliant. Only those indi- viduals whose freedom in the matter had not been restricted by the law had the in- clination to live by it. A similar situation arose a decade earlier several hundred miles south of Ken- nesaw, when, to protect the environment, Dade County (Miami), Florida, imposed an antiphosphate ordinance prohibiting the use-and possession!-of laundry or cleaning products containing phosphates. A study done to determine the social im- pact of the law discovered two parallel reactions on the part of Miami residents. First, in what seems a Florida tradition, many Miamians turned to smuggling. Sometimes with neighbors and friends in large "soap caravans," they drove to nearby counties to load up on phosphate detergents. Hoarding quickly developed
