Mardi Gras (Fat
Tuesday in English) is
a Carnival celebration
wellknown
throughout the world.
It is a season of
parades, balls and
king cake parties.
History
The celebration of Mardi Gras came to North America from Paris, where it had been
celebrated since the Middle Ages.
In the late 1700s preLenten balls and fetes were held in New Orleans. Under French rule
masked balls flourished, but were later banned by the
Spanish governors. The
prohibition continued
when New Orleans became
an American city in 1803.
The traditional colors of
Mardi Gras are purple
(justice), gold (power) and
green (faith). These colors
are said to have been chosen
by Grand Duke Alexis
Alexandrovitch Romanoff
of Russia during a visit to
New Orleans in 1872.
Costumes and masks are seldom publicly worn by nonKrewe members on the days before Fat Tuesday,
but are frequently worn on Mardi Gras Day. Laws against concealing one's identity with a mask are
suspended for the day. Banks are closed, and some businesses and other places with security concerns
post signs asking people to remove their masks before entering.
Inexpensive strings of beads and toys have been
thrown from floats to paradegoers since at least the
late 19th century.
With the advent of
the 21st century, more sophisticated throws
began
to replace simple metallic
beads. Krewes started to produce
limited edition beads and plush toys that are unique to
the krewe.
The first week of January in New Orleans starts the King cake season. The traditional King
cake is a coffee cake. It is iced with a simple icing and covered with purple, green and gold
sugar.
Each cake contains a hidden bean or small plastic baby, and custom tells that whoever finds
it must either buy the next King cake or throw the next King
cake party. One Mardi Gras
organization uses the King cake
tradition to choose the queen of
its annual ball.
The formal end of Mardi Gras arrives with "the Meeting of the
Courts", a ceremony at which Rex and His Royal Consort meet
with Comus and his Queen at the ball of the Mistick Krewe of
Comus.
Promptly at the stroke of midnight at the end of Fat Tuesday, a mounted
squad of New Orleans police officers make a show of clearing upper
Bourbon Street where the bulk of outoftown revelers congregate,
announcing that Mardi Gras is over, as it is the start of Lent, commencing
with Ash Wednesday (the day after Fat Tuesday)

Mardi Gras in the USA Mardi Gras, from the French words meaning "Fat Tuesday," combines religious tradition with a carnival or festival to welcome spring. It is also called Shove Tuesday or Pancake Day (in UK pancakes have an important role in celebrating Mardi Gras). Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival- a festival season. Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas on January 6 and ends on Mardi Gras, which always falls exactly 47 days before Easter. The date of Mardi Gras changes every year. In the year 2008 it is on the 5th of February. "Fat Tuesday" is also the last day that Catholics can eat meat before Lent, the forty-day period of fasting before Easter The cities most famous for their Mardi Gras celebrations include New Orleans, Louisiana; Venice, Italy; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Many other places have important Mardi Gras celebrations as well.

Mardi Gras Ursula 10. kl Mardi Gras A Christian holiday and popular cultural phenomenon, Mardi Gras dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites. Mardi Gras can occur on any Tuesday from February 3 through March 9. It is always scheduled 47 days preceding Easter (the 40 days of Lent, plus seven Sundays). Mardi Gras, also known as "Shrove Tuesday", "Pancake Tuesday" or "Fat Tuesday" is celebrated all over the world with fun, games, and a lot of eating. The official colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold. Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold signifies power. There is no general theme for Mardi Gras, but each individual parade depicts a specific subject. Among the more popular subjects have been history, children's stories, legends, geography, famous people and entertainment.

to put under their pillows. When the guests began to dance, the bride and her mother went to the bridal chamber where she took off her wedding clothes and changed into her nightgown. The bride and groom spent their honeymoon in her parents' house. They were expected to stay in the bedroom for five days or more. Creole Customs Creole customs can be divided into two kinds: religious and non-religious. Religious customs focus on holidays: All Saints Day, Mardi gras and Easter, for example. On All Saints Day Creoles bring flowers made of white, black, or purple tissue paper to place on graves in the cemetery. The week before this holiday shops display crowns and crosses with black beads. Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. At Easter, rabbits come out at night. The children try to stay up as late as possible, but they don't see the rabbits. The rabbit's nests are found filled

SPORT In English the word ‘sport’ describes both casual play and the highest levels of performance. Recent surveys reveal that 10% of adults play sports more than twice a week, the majority of the British population involves in sport or physical recreation at least once a month. Most people have an interest in some sports as a player, spectator or gambler, but everybody in Britain seems to be fond of outdoor exercise, be it jogging, walking, rambling or just sitting on the bench outdoors. As British homes are rather cool in winter (at least for Estonians!), the saying goes that ‘the English like fresh air outdoors and indoors’. Most people are conscious of the good influence of sport on their health. They expect a lot from it – having an attractive body shape, strengthening their hearts, lowering their blood pressure and reducing stress. To keep fit or just to relax, most people in towns involve themselves

Main Sights England is known for its many world-famous sightseeings and people all around the world come to see them. Some of them are even like symbols of England. The most famous ones are: Stonehenge is one of the greatest national icons of Britain. That prehistoric monument is located in the plain of Salisbury, in the county of Wiltshire in the south-west of England. It is built of 150 enormous stones which are set in a purposive circular pattern. Stonehenge was probably built to mark the longest and shortest day of the year because it lies on the line of the midsummer sunrise and the midsummer sunset. That would have enabled people to keep a record of changing of seasons. Although it is still unclear who built it. Hadrian’s Wall is an ancient wall which was built in 2nd century by Hadrian, the emperor of Rome from AD 117 to 138, and it marked the northern border of the Roman Empire in Britain. The wall was 80 Roman miles (117 kilometres) long and it is situated in northern Great

1. Ancient Britain: the Celtic tribes. 2000 years ago there was an Iron Age Celtic culture throughout the Br Isles. It seems that the Celts, who had been arriving from Europe from the 8th cent BC onward, intermingled with the peoples who were already there. The Celts were extremely talented people, creative and artistic. More than 1 Celtic tribe invaded Br. The descendants of ancient Celts live in Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Ireland. They lived in primitive society. Druids priests, more powerful than chiefs. Acted like prophets. 2. Stonehenge From prehistoric period. Was built on Salisbury plain between 2500 and 1500 bc. One of the most famous and mysterious archaeological sites in the world. One of the mysteries is how it was built at all with the technology of the time. Another is its purpose. It appears to function as a kind on astronomical clock and we know it was used by the Druids for ceremonies marking the passing of the seasons. It appears in number of novels. T
