MIS ON MANGROVE FOREST ÜLDSE? Mangrove swamps are found in tropical and subtropical tidal areas. Many mangrove forests can be recognized by their dense tangle of prop roots that make the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the water. This tangle of roots allows the trees to handle the daily rise and fall of tides, which means that most mangroves get flooded at least twice per day. The roots also slow the movement of tidal waters, causing sediments to settle out of the water and build up the muddy bottom. KAARDIGA SLAID

chain of islands stretching from mainland South-East Asia. The mainland and larger islands are mountainous and rugged, divided by large fertile upland valleys. Fast- flowing rivers from the highlands descend to the coastal plains. A line of active volcanoes stretches along the north coast of the mainland and continues on the island of New Britain. To the north and south of this central mountain range on the main island lie vast stretches of mangrove swamps and coastal river deltas. /1/ Volcanoes and thermal pools are also found in the southeast of other islands. Papua New Guinea offers the greatest variety of terrestrial ecosystems in the South Pacific, including five types of lowland rainforest, 13 types of montane rainforest, five varieties of palm and swamp forest and three different mangrove forests. Two-thirds of the world's species of orchids come from New Guinea. /1/ Birds include 38 species of the bird of paradise,

the use of rapid and effective clean-up techniques, which may not be compatible with the survival of plants and animals. Marsh vegetation shows greater sensitivity to fresh light crude or light refined products whilst weathered oils cause relatively little damage. Oiling of the lower portion of plants and their root systems can be lethal whereas even a severe coating on leaves may be of little consequence especially if it occurs outside the growing season. In tropical regions, mangrove forests are widely distributed and replace salt marshes on sheltered coasts and in estuaries. Mangrove trees have complex breathing roots above the surface of the organically rich and oxygen-depleted muds in which they live. Oil may block the openings of the air breathing roots of mangroves or interfere with the trees' salt balance, causing leaves to drop and the trees to die. The root systems can be damaged by fresh oil entering nearby animal burrows and the effect may
Further west is a narrow belt of the Cascade Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada Range Still further west lies an area of valleys. The forests cover 30% of the US. In the southern part of Alaska grow coniferous trees, notably spruces and firs. Around the Great Lakes and New England are mixed forests of pines, maples, elms, birches, oaks and beeches. Along the Gulf of Mexico grow magnolia, red and black gum, cypress and mangrove. Geographical Regions The territory of the United can be divided into eight regions: 1) New England; 2) the Mid-Atlantic region; 3) the South; 4) the Midwest; 5) the Southwest; 6) the Rocky Mountain region; 7) the Pacific Northwest and Alaska; 8) California and Hawaii. New England is highly industrial, but it also has many fields, woods and small towns. New England is the part of the United States that is most like "old" England. It includes
the west. Farther west are the bushlands. The real deserts occupy the centre of the Western Plateau. In the very south west there are thin forests of evergreens trees. Australia is the driest inhabited continent, the flattest, and has the oldest and least fertile soils. Only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent have a temperate climate. The northern part of the country, with a tropical climate, has vegetation consisting of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps and desert. Climate is highly influenced by ocean currents, including the El Niño southern oscillation. 4. Land regions Mountains The Great Dividing Range runs along the Pacific ocean. These mountains are very old and much of worn down but the Australian Alps are the highest of them. The highest top Mount Kosciusko is 2228 metres above sea level. It was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Strzelecki in 1840 in honour of the
The Kodiak bear, the largest carnivore found in North America, is found in Alaska. Plants The vegetation of Northern Alaska consists of lichens, mosses, low shrubs and flowering plants. In the southern part of Alaska grow conifers, spruces and firs. Around the Great Lakes and New England are mixed forests of pines, maples, elms, birches, oaks etc. Along the Gulf of Mexico grow magnolia, red and black gum, cypress and mangrove. In the west grow forests of sequoia. In the NW grow conifers firs, hemlocks, cedars, spruces and pines. Agriculture Agriculture is a major industry in the United States and the country is a net exporter of food. Corn, turkeys, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, and sunflower seeds constitute some of the major holdovers from the agricultural endowment of the Americas. In the U.S., farms spread from the colonies westward along with the settlers

former baby rather than to the man everyone calls "Jack." In reply, Devitt (1981a: 150) suggests a move to multiple grounding. A naming ceremony, he says, is only one kind of occasion that can ground an appropriate historical chain; other perceptual encounters can serve also. Instead of there being just the single linear causal chain that goes back from one's utterance to the original naming ceremony, the structure is mangrove- like: the utterance proceeds also out of further historical chains that are grounded in later stages of the bearer itself. Once our use of "Madagascar" has a large preponderance of its groundings in the island rather than the mainland region, it thereby comes to designate the island; once our use of "Jack" is heavily grounded in many people's perceptual encounters with the man called that, those groundings will overmaster the chain that began with the naming ceremony
