The history of movies

They started to assume that it was normal to be entertained. Most americans went to see the movies at least once a week. The movie industry became a big business. People might not know the names of government officials but they knew the name s of every leading actor and actress. It also changed people's thinking. Young americans tried to copy what they saw in the movies. They dreamed about faraway places and a different kind of life. THE STORY (do houses look like in Desperate Housewives and do women look like in Baywatch). In addition the actors and actresses at this time were told to practice public behavior. Where to eat. How to dress, what they could be seen doing. Made people more equal. Rich and poor families saw the same movies. The children all shared the same wish to be like movie stars. Culture and westernization. The culture in big towns moved over to rural areas. The nation exported it-s culture through movies . Movies were actually key to the

Jordan Baker did not play a primary character in The Great Gatsby and she definitely did not start out as the most likeable one, yet oddly enough, she ended up being my favourite. The reason for that is simple: she portrayed a present-day woman who might have been vain, and at times, careless but she was also fairly independent and knew how to take care of herself in a world where women were thought of as nothing more than merely housewives. I truly respect the qualities she possessed, even though they were not always admirable and considerate of others. The number one trait I liked about Jordan as a character was her independence and the fact that she was not reliant on men, which cannot be said about Daisy and Myrtle. All the female characters were in their twenties but Jordan was the only one who still had not got married nor had a child. She had her own ideals and goals, and she stood for

They started to throw dead cats to the well and thanks to this common citizen started to call the well Cat's Well. Although the wells of Tallinn never ran dry, the water was soon undrinkable due to the sacrifices. How did Kiek in de Kök get its name It is said that at the medieval times the cannon tower was so high that the warriors on top of it could see, how housewives and maids were cooking lunch in their kitchens, thus the name, meaning "peek into the kitchen". Conclusion It was very interesting to write this report, because before I wasn't aware that there are so many enchanting legends about people, buildings, sights and objects in Tallinn. Thanks to this report I have discovered some new stories that are not so famous, but yet so fascinating. One of these is the legend about the Cat's Well. I

Sexualisation of women in advertising

Page 1 of 5 Dear women around the world, I would like to share my thoughts with you about something that has been an issue in our society for too long. + Are you not tired of us being portrayed only as sex objects, stupid, helpless and only necessary as housewives, who cannot survive without a man? Well, I am and I think it is time to take real action about this problem! We can’t let the advertisers carry on without any moral responsibility. I understand that we live in a very sexualized world, which means subsequently that sexual content dominates in media. Due to this, we often just attempt to ignore sexist commercials. This is a huge mistake however

Advantages and disadvantages of television

At the same time there are a lot of arguments against TV. It is said that only three generations have grown up with television, but they managed to forget how to spend their free time without television. Its role is increasing not because it is an entertainer or informant, but because of the grip it has on many people. It is called a "living room monster" or "one-eyed monster." It is established that the biggest viewers are pensioners and housewives. The latter watch TV while their husbands are at work. In total they spend five hours daily sitting before the "boxes." Children watch commercials, horror films or films of violence. TV prevents children from creating their abilities. They get accustomed to TV to such an extent that they watch it all the time. To force their children away from their favourite evening programmes to their homework has eventually become the main problem of the parents of different countries.

Although over the years more women have started to use a car, but the change between male and female car users have still persisted. Females have started to make working-career by themselves and the need for transportation has increased; one of the comfortable ways to get to a work would definitely be a car. Housewives can also use car to do the grocery shopping or to take children to school. (http://academic.mintel.com A) Since 1998 more and more households are owing 2 cars. (0,815ppm). Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in consumer products, such as cosmetics and household cleaning agents. The general public may also be exposed during release from some building materials such as pressed wood products. The estimates for the systemic absorption of formaldehyde through the entire epidermal layer and across the circulatory layer are negligible. The levels of exposure to formaldehyde of housewives were determined in 1985 (measured by personal air sampling apparatus). The individual exposures varied between 0.011 and 0.311 mg/m 3 (0.009 to 0.259 ppm) equivalent to a daily dose of 0.13 to 3.7 mg. The usual exposure was between 0.018 and 0.030 mg/m3. These measurements included the indoor and outdoor background levels as well as the usual exposure by consumer products (WHO IPCS, 1989). The Puritan society itself was a lesson in hypocrisy. Supposedly, they were firm believers in the Bible, but the Bible advocates forgiveness and toleration. The whole society's basis was on religious enlightenment. Yet, why was it that the first thing that was to be built in Boston was a prison? Why is the first building thought of a place of punishment? Another example of religious hypocrisy happened early in the book. Hawthorne described some gossiping housewives that were talking about Hester's punishment. Each one of the housewives was advocating harsher punishment for Hester. "The magistrates are Godfearing gentleman, but merciful overmuch, that is the truth," added a third autumnal matron. "At the very least, they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester Prynne's forehead. Madam Hester would have winced at that, I warrant me."(Housewife 36). Religion is often the source of much hypocrisy

Eventually, when all the reporters and would-be converts had been cleared from the house, the believers began making their final preparations for the arrival of the spaceship scheduled for midnight that night. The scene as viewed by Fes- tinger, Riecken, and Schachter must have seemed like absurdist theater. Otherwise ordinary people-housewives, college students, a high-school boy, a publisher, a physician, a hardware-store clerk and his mother-were participating earnestly in tragic comedy. They took direction from a pair of members who were periodically in touch with the Guardians; Marian Keech's written messages were being supple- mented that evening by "the Bertha," a former beautician through whose tongue the "Creator" gave instruction. They rehearsed their lines diligently, calling out in

the National Puzzlers League who wanted to concentrate more on cryp- tology, taking as their motto "The cryptogram is the aristocrat of puzzles." Today the A.C.A. numbers about 500 members, including some from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, Algeria, England, Netherlands, Spain, Northern Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Argentina, Venezuela, and Canada. Their professions are varied; included are lawyers, editors, physicians, professors, civil servants, teachers, housewives, printers, engineers, mathematicians, computer programmers, a puzzle maker, and retired people. Most of the members affect a nom de plume, or sort of sprightly codename, like B. NATURAL, AB STRUSE, FRINKUS, DR. CRYPTOGRAM; this is a carry-over from the National Puzzlers League and is alleged to increase informality among the membership. Every other month, the association publishes The Cryptogram, a magazine usually of 24 pages with articles on cryptanalysis, new ciphers, and cryptologic history
